Your shmup for the year 2005.

Post by SPACE HARRIER »

So the year is almost gone..pffff.
There was a lot of going on this year..some good things :D and really bad ones :( in the world..anyway..I think everybody has found somethings that made this year special!!

I always was a BIG fan of the galaga series, so I was really pleased to see a new version of galaga for the psp...so the best shmup this year for me has to be GALAGA ARRANGED on the namco museum collection..( Yes, I'm a really old oldskool shmuper..haha!)

What is your shmup for 2005?

Well for me it was IBARA. It just felt, for me, that Raizing was back. A wonderful, wonderful game!

Trizeal (Dreamcast, 2005). A gift from the old-school gods.

I didn't get Border Down until this year, and I have to say it's simply fantastic. Only Battle Garegga tops this game.

Dragon Blaze. When I first got it, I wasn't used to Psikyo shooters at all and it completely kicked my ass. Now it's at the top of my top 25 list.

Trizeal and Mushihimesama.

These games are just plain fun.

I've enjoyed Mushihime-sama, Trizeal and Dragon Blaze... but I'm going to have to put my vote for best of 2005 to Homura. It's the one game this year that seriously sucked me in.

Even though I haven't played it  I think Under Defeat is the game of the year.

From what I have played its either Trizeal or Homura.

Mushihimesama & Psyvariar II on the PS-2.

I love Psyvariar II!

Finally being able to play Raiden Jet Fighters 1 and 2, as well as Raiden DX and Raiden 2 (PC and PSX versions respectively), the faster pace of the RJF games compared to the original really tested my crappy reflexes, but it was all worth the many lives I lost on RJF 1/2.

You should try Raiden III.

Of the ones I played, I gotta say that Mushihimesama is far and away the best of them.

I got all 3 of Cave's latest this year and in retrospect Mushihimesama might just edge it. I just adore the design and the depth of the 3 game modes. It's the prettiest 2D game I've played since Metal Slug.
Ibara and Galuda 2 are very very close runners up though. All have their merits.

Gunbird 2. It's my first shmup within walking distance.

I'm going to have to go with Raiden Fighters here. This was the year I finally made the jump into arcade collecting, and by far, RF1 has spent the most time in my cabinet (I have 2 as well, but find that I prefer 1 for some reason, when I expected the opposite when I came up with both of them.)

The only shmup I've bought so far that came out this year was Phantasmagoria of Flower View. Oh wait, I also bought Trizeal and Chaos Field.

Trizeal makes me smile, but the slowdown (especially in two player mode) and the loading makes me frown.

Eh, I'll just say Phantasmagoira of Flower View because even though I haven't played it yet it's installed on my PC, I've looked at the AI beat each other up and found it to be ten times more intense than Twinkle Star Sprites.

For stuff released this year, Mushihime. Colorful visuals, ambient music, and easy gameplay made a nice, relaxing time and 1CC for me.

If I didn't have a truckload of independent reasons, that screenshot alone would have me preordering Ibara.

If I had been able to play it, Ibara might have taken the gold for me.

Man, I loves me some Raizing...

Trizeal was a lot of fun. I played Raiden III to death. And finally getting to play Dragon Blaze properly (or at least really close to it), was everything I dreamt it would be. Hell, DB is easily going to be added to my next "Top 25 of all time".

But ya know, nothing's given me that lovely endorphin rush; that numbness in the face, that Mushihime sama's maniac mode did. Damn, what a rush.

So yeah, it's not the greatest shmup of all time, but Mushihime sama is my shmup of the year (I guess the PCB came out in '04, but what the hey.. ).

Hmm... probably Dodonpachi DOJ.

It's the one game I can imagine growing old with. Maybe I'll even see the st4 boss sometime, too...

EDIT: My copy of Mushihimesama arrived in the mail today (thank you eBay), so consider my opinion null and void.

Now you guys are confusing me

Isn't Ibara made by Cave? Why is everyone talking like it was made by Raizing? Didn't Raizing bite the dust sometime ago?

There were some of the Raizing devs working on Ibara, so people like to wishful think it's another Raizing game. It's not, but it's as close as It'll get. It is supposed to be very Raizing-ish.
