Need an Odd Custom Cable for a TurboDuo with RGB Mod

Post by Tempest_2084 »

I had a friend do an RGB mod on my TurboDuo for me, and for some reason he decided to have the video output go to a VGA style (DE-15) port he installed on the back of the unit. The RGB out looks incredible, but now I need to figure out how to hook it up to my current setup. What I need is a cable that is VGA male to male SCART. This isn't too hard to find, but I also need a way to get audio out, and this seems to be a sticking point. I can either use my old TurboDuo video cable and tap the two stereo leads from that (rca style cables) or try and tap the audio from the headphone jack. Either way, I have yet to find a cable that does either of these. The closest I can find is this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/331278726620

Other than having a power lead I don't need, I think this might work. It appears to be VGA male and a headphone plug to male SCART. However since this cable is pricey I wanted to see if anyone knows if something like this will work.

Why not just add a phono/3.5mm to RCA audio plug alongside the VGA to SCART? People usually complain about audio buzzing when it's part of the SCART cable anyway.

Can't be generalized. Without opening or the cable or using a multimeter you cannot know which pinout he used (assuming he used audio on the connector as well of course).

I guess I could do that. I just didn't want to have a bunch of ugly cables laying around. I also don't want to have to swap the speaker jack around every time I want to play with the Duo. Currently my speakers are plugged into my Sync Strike which has audio out (gets it from the SCART cable).

Crud, I was afraid of that. This is why I asked. :) I guess I can always send him an email and ask.

Gotcha. You'd have to splice audio into a regular SCART adapter then if you've got the skills, or find someone who will custom wire a cable for you. I know there are people on ebay who make SCART cables by hand and take custom pinouts, but I don't know of any that deal with DE-15 connectors.

I sent a note to the guy who made that cable I linked to, I'll see what he has to say about it.

BTW does anyone know of someone who does recaps on TurboDuos? I need to get mine recapped.

He responded that it *should* work. He was nice enough to give me details on how it is constructed:

Looks like it should work. Then again I'm not an electronics expert by any means. He said the only thing that would worry him is the Voltage Peak to Peak (Vpp) level.

I think I'm going to order this cable. Can someone take a quick peak at that link I posted and double check that this would work?

we can't really tell if it'll work because we have no clue how the person who modified your console configured the pins on the VGA port. the best thing to do would be to ask the modder himself how he did it. send him the link to the scart to vga schematic & ask if he followed that pinout.

Thinking about it again, yeah, you need to ask your modder how he wired the VGA port itself, i.e. is it wired exactly to standard.

Unfortunately he's moving across the country so he's not going to be able to respond any time soon. I'm not exactly sure what the 'standard' is, but I was able to plug the VGA (DE-15) to RGB cable that use with my Sync Strike into it and get a nice picture on my RGB monitor. Does that mean it's standard?

Sorry for all the confusing questions.

well, once again that depends on the pinout of the sync strike. i'd assume whatever pinout it uses would be standard, seeing as it's a mass-produced device. like fudoh said, it's impossible to generalise when you're dealing with stuff like this. i'd recommend buying the cable & trying to negotiate some sort of return policy with the seller in advance.

I'm wondering if it wouldn't be easier and cheaper to just get a VGA to SCART cable like this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/360247777492) and just solder the two sound leads to it using a audio cable that plugs into the headphone jack. Looks like I just need to cut the cable open and solder the two wires to pins 2 and 6.

That's all it take to add audio though right? Seems simple enough, even to someone with zero soldering skills like me. :)

Which one? The first one I linked to (with the power supply and audio cables) or the second one? How can you tell?

The most recent ebay one. Its not fully wired, R, G and B aren't connected, just the composite pin on the scart to probably the h-sync pin on the VGA end and some grounds. The VGA end is moulded so you can't rewire it. It would be cheaper to buy a Scart end and a VGA end and make the cable yourself.

This one? http://www.ebay.com/itm/360247777492 How can you tell?

Would this one work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/141370475757

It probably would be cheaper just to make my own, but I'm not 100% sure how to wire it. The diagram I linked to sort of helps, but not enough. Is there a guide to wiring one of these up?
