Soldner X/X2 dev gauging interest for Vita port

I have never played this game despite only owning a PS3 for the longest time. Judging by the screens it does seem like a good fit for the Vita though. Is it any good?

Never played them but I believe they're both pretty crap, with one a bit better than the other. Something like that.

I own the first one. It's alright if you haven't played many shooters, and have a limited collection. Unfortunately however, I'd already played Einhander and Gradius V which are both infinitely better (although not on PS3 or Vita per se).

I'd be interested in checking out X2, as it's meant to be slightly better. Plus, the Vita needs more shmups, and the Soldner series (for all its faults) does look gorgeous. Can only imagine the level of eye candy if X2 hits the Vita...

Edit: that doesn't mean that I'm endorsing the series. The first one was only slightly above average, and if the second one is only marginally better, then one would be better served by picking up other games (at a cheaper price).

Edit x 2: both Soldner X titles are currently on UK PSN sale.

I've only played X2, but it's a bland and monotonous euroshmup.

Yeah, sorry. It's actually X2 which I had purchased. Pretty average. It's on UK PSN sale (pretty cheap too), so get it to try it, but don't expect anything spectacular.

I think the Soldner X series is like Sine Mora, in that it has found a decent amount of acclaim among people who don't normally play STGs and don't have any knowledge of what makes a good one.

Of course, there are others who have been steadfastly playing "euroshmups" since the C64 or Amiga days, and just happen to prefer that style of game. Similar to Americans with an attachment to Ford cars, which I will never understand.

If that's the case, why wouldn't companies like Cave simply hire these artists to take care of the eye candy then?
Would be a win-win situation?

Ironically, X2 was one of the games that got me into the shmups genre. I was going through a breakup and took a chance on it. It's really pretty but it sucks (coincidentally, similar to the ex I was getting over).

Deathsmiles was the next game I played and from then on I was hooked.

I think there's actually something about really bad scrolling shooters in general that gets people, not just the graphics. Don't ask me what it is, cause I don't know.

I'd risk and say + low challenge + not retail (download/inexpensive).

I actually don't mind X2 as much. The game has it's flaws (one of which being that the music changes when you're at low health) but overall I'd say it's worth playing a couple times. I'm not saying it's a great game, I'm just saying it holds up much better than the first one imo.

I do in fact have a friend who doesn't like shmups but has played many hours of this game and says it's one of his favorites, even after I've had him play much better designed games like Rayforce, Dodonpachi, etc. and tried to explain the appeals of the genre and why most fans don't like games like Soldner. He didn't like any other games and still says Soldner is the only one he likes.

I think he said something about it being easier to get into and patterns being more "beginner friendly" or something like that, so I guess low difficulty is a start like Kollision said. I'd also be willing to wager that it's just a matter of them not liking the genre, only really being interested in playing it for the novelty, and so just take the lowest hanging and most easily acquirable fruit.

Honestly Cave games are much prettier.

Soldner isn't nearly as soulless, boring and dreadful as Sine Mora, but that doesn't mean Soldner is good;

It just means that Sine Mora is worse than chronic constipation.

Debatable methinks. At least Sine Mora tries to have some gimmicks and be somewhat "innovative" even if it fails miserably at it. Soldner doesn't even try to do anything new. It's just a 1 hour 30 minute slog of utter repetitiveness and monotony with some of the worst pattern design I've ever seen.

Soldner doesn't have a piano powerup so it's automatically better no matter what.

The best of the three imo is Söldner-X 1.
Best graphics + difficulty combo.

I would definitely choose Sine Mora over Soldner X-2. At least some of the mechanics are cool, even if the game completely disincentivizes you from using them and is otherwise pretty garbage. Also I seem to recall Soldner's bosses being a total slog, but I dunno if that's accurate considering I played it all of two times.

So rather than port Soldner-X 2 to PC to go with the original game, they're porting it to the noticeably smaller user base of the Vita.

...

I'm sure that makes sense somewhere, but it's not in this universe.

It makes sense in Europe.

Not sure about that. Playstation maybe more popular than Xbox, but I don't think that translates to the vita and handheld gaming... And Europe is pretty pc friendly.

Perhaps they know they don't have an indie darling, otherwise pc would be top of the list everywhere. Maybe they figure it'll get a dual giveaway on ps plus. Cross play would be an easy bullet point. If nothing else that'll result in some impressive numbers and get it in front of people... But then again shouldn't this have happened ages ago?

There's some nice work in it but it's a shame that both games are a bit souless.

It lacks the execution of gradius, has none of r type final's gravitas, and wishes it could do the thunderforce bonkers fun. I kind of hope they're gearing up for another game, I'd encourage them to not do the same again, but to have another go at making a New shmup... but more likely it's a port that is being done just because it can be done.

Probably receiving "incentives" from Sony.
