Spent my savings for the PS3 on shooters
After being underwhelmed by the 360 and increasingly skeptical about the quantum leap promised in the next-gen, I spent my entire wad on the following:
A used white Saturn in the box and the following 5 games with spine cards (never really heard of spine cards in my life until now).
Batsugun
DoDonPachi
Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus
Soukyugurentai
Radiant Silvergun
My friends really dont get it at all and think I lost it. The problem I ran into is that I ran out of shooters released in the USA and still go back to Raiden Project and Strikers 1945 alot more than Halo and Tony Hawk fare. I never thought I would bite the bullet and have an Asian Invasion at my house but just figured what the hell. The PS3 might be cool but perhaps I should wait until it comes out for awhile and there is actually more than one or two games I really need for it and wait for the price to come down a bit.
That being said, I finally understand now what the hype over Silvergun is all about. Having all those weapons available from the start is great. It really seems to hold up considering its age. There is a certain intangible there, a certain polish in every aspect of the game.

I think your friends need to stop equating next-gen graphics with actual gameplay fun, and perhaps stop listening to advertising so much and try thinking for themselves.stoneroses wrote:My friends really dont get it at all and think I lost it.
The world is going nuts over XBox360 and PS3, and what for? Will "Dead or Alive 4" more more fun than the first three now that it has high-res boobies and a better boob-wobbling physics engine? Will "Project Gotham 3" have better gameplay than the first two thanks to high-res graphics and extra bling? Hell no.
DoDonPachi is 240 pixels by 320 pixels, and beats the shit out of everything on XBox360 so far. Graphics don't make a console. Fun does. About the only thing worth playing on the '360 are the classic arcade games that you can download via XBox Live.
I think you've spent your money wisely.
I think you got an excellent deal.
Well, if you could have taken the same games significantly cheaper without obi, it would have been even better. Anyway, enjoy the Saturn, there's plenty to play on it. It will keep you busy for years, just in time to hop onto the next-gen board at a lowered price. You're a winner.

Hey i'm new blood too! Don't forget about me!
Great choice on getting those games/system instead of a nextgen PS3.
I'm seriously considering not going next gen. But that won't probably last long since Treasure is releasing a 2D shooter on the 360.
At least you won't have to worry about your Saturn not reading CD's or overheating/whatever else. The Saturn is one of the better built systems, IMO.
Enjoy! *runs back to RSG*

Right, I don't know how much, let's say I trust he's a reasonable guy. ^_^ Anyway, I did comment on the quality of his purchase, regardless of price. But I suppose it was an amount that could have bought him a 360 at least, given the thread name.mannerbot wrote:Wait, do you know how much he spent on all of this? Anyway thumbs up on the easy decision. Give Batsugun the time it deserves as the best shmup on the Saturn.

If I'm not being rude to ask, but about how much did you spend for all those goodies?stoneroses wrote:After being underwhelmed by the 360 and increasingly skeptical about the quantum leap promised in the next-gen, I spent my entire wad on the following:

Not a bad haul - certainly a great way to get started on Saturn shooters.
Of that list, I think Dodonpachi is the best game, though Radiant Silvergun is a close second.
And this way you won't be spending $60 a game (for most titles anyway - you already got the big one out of the way)

You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.
Probably the stupidest thing i've read on the net today, but the night is young.ROBOTRON wrote:The XBox 360 is a regular XBox with a new casing and a better graphics card.
Thats all.
The rest is HYPE. Your friends are shallow (videogamewise).
Anyway Stone Roses, that's a top selection of games you have there, with Batsugun and Radiant Silvergun being particular favourites of mine. Have some happy gaming man!

Excellent choices Stoneroses!
As for the x360... meh... Only game interesting on it (other than 'Senko no Ronde') is 'Geometry Wars'. Asteroids on acid.

Thanks for the support. Lets just say the total was in the range of the 360. It should be fun. I feel like adding games will be a little easier getting some of the higher profile ones out of the way right off the bat.
Perhaps when the time comes a Japanese PS3 may be in order. I would get the best of the new with the open access to all of the older shooters that I could never play on the PSone and PS2.
Some might suggest modding or emulation, but there just seems something inauthentic about the whole thing. Having that white Saturn right next to a Dreamcast is pretty F-ing cool. It looks like a cool older brother!

Re: Spent my savings for the PS3 on shooters
No, but the gameplay mechanics have improved quite nicely over PGR2, with a much better kudos system. Not trying to argue here, but I actually do think PGR3 is the best of the three. It's got its issues (the Live play isn't very well balanced, and everyone drives the same car or gets left in the dust) but I happen to think it plays quite a bit better than PGR2. The real in-car views are a really nice touch too.elvis wrote: Will "Project Gotham 3" have better gameplay than the first two thanks to high-res graphics and extra bling? Hell no.
That said, nothing wrong with spending the money on a Saturn (I've got a Japanese Saturn and a number of games myself.) If I hadn't been able to get my 360 on launch day I probably wouldn't be in any hurry to get one at this point.
Re: Spent my savings for the PS3 on shooters
I don't doubt it will be *slightly* better. But I do question if that amount of improvement is worth the cost of the 360 plus the game title itself. Are you willing to spend $500+ on those improvements?Vexorg wrote:No, but the gameplay mechanics have improved quite nicely over PGR2, with a much better kudos system. Assuming I even had $500 lying around waiting to be spent, there's a long list of other stuff I'd get waaaay before even considering a 360.
You might just go to hell, since clearly Garegga is not only the best on Saturn, but the best ever. But it's good to see you back here.mannerbot wrote:Wait, do you know how much he spent on all of this? How can you say that it was a good deal?![]()

stoneroses: I recommend MAME. A lot of things have decent Saturn conversions and playing a broad range of games will give you a feel for what you like.
I also recommend Rando's excellent Batsugun ST in the strategy section.

Most game consumer is not as hardcore as most of us. And they tends to buy what looks good and what they think most people are enjoying.
The game industory found out that they could milk this people by relasing virsaily stunding games, back up by expensive advertising. And when party found themselve lossing in a console sale, they can just press the reset button by releasing a next generation console.
This situation is driving good games (innovative, with qulity gameplay) from the console market. Which is a sad thing for nowadays kids.
Hardcore gamers whom really play games knows that the actual gameplay comes first than everything. The fact is I keep playing old NES Zanac on my PS2. And that is a game used to run on an 8-bits system created by a team of only 4 people: 2 programmers, 1 artist, 1 music composor.
What a huge waste of processing power for my PS2... Not to mension the 3D graphic card is rather useless.
On the other hand, in the acrade people paid for each time they play a game. Thus the game insdustory would care about gameplay like the old days only when they are making a new Acrade game. It's sad but it is the current situation.
So if I got the money for a new generation console, I would spend it for a Neomi instead (I already own a Japanese Saturn). The problem is I had already spent all my spare money on PCBs...
So please buy some games form me... I am out of money...

The leap in gaming quality between generations is just hype now.
The decision to purchase a new console can be easily summarised into this: Do you want to play newly released mainstream games (including online)?
Yes? Buy a 360.
No? Don't buy a 360.
The graphics jump is no longer even part of the decision making process, there will be no more quantum leaps to be had. Kudos for working out what you really wanted.
