Wii vs. Wii U - Best video quality for Wii games?
I'd been planning to run through a few of the unplayed Wii games in the stack I've had piling up for the last few years. But before I do, I want to know what the best way of playing Wii games, and I'm not sure if the best way to do that is through the Wii, using a scaler like the Framemeister, or with the WiiU. I haven't seen a particularly good comparison of the two yet, either. I only tried the WiiU with a couple Wii games briefly, and thought I saw some ringing artifacts when I had the system set to upscale, but who knows - maybe that's still an improvement over the Wii's poor video output.
Anybody taken the time to compare the two?

I was really disappointed with video output from the Wii when I finally upgraded to an HDTV and switched to 480p component.
Wii U has to be better?
Wii U has to be better?

Component cables to a crt is a great option.

Re: Wii vs. Wii U - Best video quality for Wii games?
Is there a device that will simply stretch the digital 720x480 output to a proper widescreen ratio? Or should I just stick to 720p output if I use a Wii U for Wii games? I haven't come across any TVs that have native support for scaling digital inputs, just analog ones.

Re: Wii vs. Wii U - Best video quality for Wii games?
I get the best quality when I connect my Wii directly to my Sony TV with component cables. This gives me all the picture controls the TV offers (sharpness, colors etc). I've tried the Framemeister for a bit and wasn't impressed. It's not bad, but also not great.
On the Wii U you're stuck with the scaling that the console does. Right at launch there were horrible scaling artifacts and when I tried it again a couple months later it was all blurry. Haven't tried it since. But as Sixfortyfive's pictures show it does a decent job.
Dolphin might give you the best picture quality, but I have to assume that it does add some lag. There's also the problem that bitmaps will look blurry and out of place with the sharper picture.

Re: Wii vs. Wii U - Best video quality for Wii games?
Currently to me the Wii mode being outputted from the Wii U looks OK - though I was a bit dissapointed - I thought they might whack some anti aliasing on there, but no.
It doesn't look massively better than my Wii did over RGB SCART though at all.
On a slight side topic, I don't really like how my 3DSXL renders normal DS games - it's a little off, ghosty I think.

You have to press Select + Start every time you launch a DS / DSi game to get a 1:1 pixel mapping. The normal scaling is god awful. The worst part about this is that once you transfer your DSi eShop games to 3DS you can't take them back to your DSi.Raytrace wrote:On a slight side topic, I don't really like how my 3DSXL renders normal DS games - it's a little off, ghosty I think.

ah I c thanks I shall try that - yeah it must be 'in between' a double pixel size screen wise, so they just decided to do the dreadful scaling.blizzz wrote:You have to press Select + Start every time you launch a DS / DSi game to get a 1:1 pixel mapping. I prefer playing NSMB DS on my DS Lite because of this o_O.
(I also find it slightly easier to do run jumps on the DS Lite
I didn't think virtual store games looked so bad - does the shift + select thing work for them too? (say for example Minish Cap ?)

Re: Wii vs. Wii U - Best video quality for Wii games?
The GBA VC games are native 3DS software. You only need to do the trick for DSi software, for example Shantae: Risky's Revenge. There are other issues with the GBA VC games though. For some reason Nintendo thought it was a good idea to emulate the blur of the original GBA screen
The best way to play DS games is still on a DSi or DS Lite. The DSi is just overall such a great handheld and much more comfortable than the 3DS XL.

yeah I might get a DSi - I don't like how on the 3DSXL the d-pad is not as natural to use as the analogue nub thing. Is the DSi same res as 3DS XL (apart from the 3d crap?)blizzz wrote:The GBA VC games are native 3DS software. You only need to do the trick for DSi software, for example Shantae: Risky's Revenge. No, the DSi has the same res as any (normal) DS, 256x192. If it had the same resolution as the 3DS (800x240 top, 320x240 bottom) it would also have the horrible scaling. If your DS Lite doesn't have the yellow tint on the screen that is a problem on some DS Lite consoles there is no reason to get a DSi.

I should have probably said approximate screen size ;oblizzz wrote:No, the DSi has the same res as any (normal) DS, 256x192. You just want to make sure you get a bluetooth adapter that's supported by Toshiba so you can leave the BT stack installed.

Indeed I agree, i've personally thought in regards to the Wii emulation has been better than the real thing for years now.brownvim wrote:Dolphin looks breathtaking at times
Heck you could even play on Nintendo Wi-FI using an emulator before Nintendo turned the servers off, not bad at all

I'd much rather use my Wii U than piss about with emulators.

Since no one replied to this yet: Almost all TVs will scale SD/ED sources to 4:3 or 16:9.bobrocks95 wrote:Is there a device that will simply stretch the digital 720x480 output to a proper widescreen ratio? I'm confused about what your problem is or what you would want said device to do.

Re: Wii vs. Wii U - Best video quality for Wii games?
That post confuses me as well. Why shouldn't TVs scale HDMI inputs? I don't think anyone would want to play PS3/360 with 1:1 mapping on a 1080p set, or use component cables instead...

Re: Wii vs. Wii U - Best video quality for Wii games?
My original question I quickly found the answer to, so instead of deleting the whole thing like I should have I just hacked off the front part. I was asking because I'd be playing on my EDTV, but I've never actually plugged in a digital 480p source to it so forgive my ignorance on how it would handle a 720x480 source. All I know is that it locks the manual scaling options on the digital inputs.

Re: Wii vs. Wii U - Best video quality for Wii games?
There are indeed several TVs which disable the aspect ratio control once 480p is detected on the input and display in forced widescreen instead. It's silly, but that's the way it is.

Actually there is a very slight greenish tint to the Wii U output. Guess that's due to differences in capturing?Sixfortyfive wrote:I don't notice a difference.
