How To Record Replays?

Post by Blackbird »

Hey everyone. I'm trying to record some Crimzon Clover replays with Fraps and I'm having a heck of a time with it. Fraps won't capture the screen if I put the game in full screen mode. I don't want to resort to windowed mode if I don't have to, because then the video won't be in 1080p. I've tried a bunch of the usual stuff like enabling/disabling Monitor Aero Desktop, running Fraps first then starting CC WI, etc..

How do you usually capture video from replays?

Ever used OBS? At the moment they only record windowed games, but you can find software that will allow you to stretch the windowed games into full screen without the window borders.

Recording replays from the screen is like the simplest thing ever. Just window the screen, choose that area of the screen (minus window decoration) to record from, and play the replay. I've only ever messed with ffmpeg, which is quite powerful, but not at all user friendly, so I wouldn't recommend it. It is quite integrated-graphics-friendly though, or as much as screen capture can be. As far as I know there's no way to capture full screen software :(

If you do want to record using ffmpeg, I could give you a batch script that I made of the commands that you need, but there was also some kind of addition software that I think was necessary in windows, that I'd have to look up. One thing you might want to try if the window is just too small to play in is lowering your screen resolution (not a bad idea anyway, if performance is an issue, and especially if you have a CRT monitor that you can use (so no additional lag))

Sorry if this doesn't help you at all

I can vouch for OBS. I used it to record Crimzon Clover, it looks great and the gameplay isn't hampered at all. It's technically not lossless but no one is going to notice.

So it sounds like the plan is just to use a workaround which runs the game in windowed mode, but at the full size of the screen?

What it comes down to is preference. The only reason why I mention window mode because I typically prefer fullscreen when I'm playing a a game. It just so happens some, but not all games support fullscreen recording on OBS. For example BWR+ full screen runs perfectly fine on Bandicam, not so much with OpenBroadcasterSoftware forcing you to use window mode. I would see if OBS does record CC on full screen and if it doesn't, use one of the borderless fullscreen windowded programs if you desire fullscreen mode.

But isn't this kind of irrelevant when a game supports replays? Play, save replay, focus your recording software on the area that you want to be recording (the window), play replay, record, ???, profit

It'd be different for something like rRootage, but with CC:WI or BWR+, you don't have to actually play the game windowed

If you do this more often, you might want to think about a hardware capture box.

The HDMI or DVI out of the PC goes into the box. The Box does output into your monitor (lagfree and losless). At the same time the video is encoded and passed back into your PC using a USB connection. This stresses the CPU much less than a software screen recorder. If you want to check into it, look at the Avermedia Portable Gamer LITE.

Haha, forgot that little detail

I recommend trying Dxtory if you want something with high performance. Recording with it using the UtVideo codec uses the least system resources from anything I've tried. I recorded Astebreed at 720p using that setup with no framedrops on a mid-tier laptop, can't think of any shmup that would be more system intensive.

Getting a separate capture device seems like the best idea in the long run though.

I figured out what the problem was. It was something insanely dumb. In any case, it's working now >_<. Thanks for your help everyone.

Alternatively, you could do what I do and use an iPad/ironing board/Yankee candle combo.. Just be sure to turn the telly down and lock the cats away when you're recording.

I'm sure this ghetto method is what Plasmo uses. :3
I on the other hand use an Elgato Game Capture HD.
