I really love Mercs, played it a lot on the capcom generations compilation, but 19xx and 1944 are great too

I wonder if Mercs even counts as a shmup?

I haven't played all of their shmups, but from what I've played I'd have to go with either Forgotten Worlds or Exed Exes.

Well, if Mamoru-kun counts, why not Mercs?
Exactly the same mechanics, only Mercs allows multidirectional shooting while Mamoru-kun has that annoying verticallly limited direction of fire.

I somehow never properly checked out Exed Eyes, so thanks for the reminder to do so. LOVE the bug theme to this! Broke down and got Capcom Generations 3 so I can play this properly in tate mode.

Too bad Varth wasn't released in Capcom Generations. I don't like the Capcom Classics version of Varth. For some reason the controls just feel off compared to the original, but maybe that's just my set up.

Never thought of it that way, I guess. When it comes to game's like this, talking about whether or not it's a shmup is just splitting hairs I guess.

I think the thing that captured me the most about Exed Exes is the music. The stage theme is so eerie and strange, and the boss theme is so repetitive (in a good way) and boss like.

I've played Varth, but could never get past the gigantic blue tank at the final level.

I never cared for the original Giga Wing. Audiovisually it's quite lacking, and the difficulty is quite low if bombs are used (the first few stages will always be sleep-inducing). Without volcanons, it feels like there's no real strategy to using reflect force. It doesn't help that the best character (Stuck) is fiddly and unsatisfying to play as.

I've always gone by if you scroll the screen it's a Run 'n Gun. But I agree with you, either way Mercs is an awesome game.
Show me everything you have, puppet of Geppetto.
