X68000 Emulation, how to use a controller

Post by segasonicfan »

I apologize if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find the info for this by searching.

Looking to use a keyboard as a controller for the XM6 emulator or find something better to test games out. I have a Playstation 2 style USB controller but it doesn't seem to recognize that. Any help is appreciated :)

Use WinX68k instead.

I'm not sure but I think I might have had to break out the Joy2Key to use it - worth it for the Nemesis 90 Kai no doubt though :)

It's funny you bring this up, it was only a couple of days ago I was giving the X68000 emulators another try. About 10 months ago I did a bit of research and I settled on XM6 to do my 1cc of Daimakaimura to compare it to the arcade version ( http://youtu.be/3aP5dYBVTiM ) Personally I wouldn't recommend it. There is so much control lagg it was borderline nearly unplayable for me. But saying that, control lag is a personal pet-hate of mine. Earlier on this week I decide to give Final Fight a proper play-through on the X68000 so I tired to get Win68k working after failing to get it working before, and wow! it's amazing..! The issue I had with it before was that I was trying to use a modded DC stick with a hacked 360 PCB but for some reason it wouldn't recognise the directions. Anyway, I had a brainwave and remembered I had an old USB Saturn pad that I never used and I decided to hack that and give it try and amazingly it worked! The differences were pretty dramatic. Sure, there is still very slight control lag but it's WAY less game breaking than using XM8, and also I managed to find a VERY nice config that gives a proper full screen 4:3 ratio with sexy scanlines, something that I could never achieve with XM6.

So to answer your question, a USB Saturn pad works perfect. :)

It's good to pay attention to control lag indeed ^_~ I wonder if this is computer or configuration-dependent, or whether XM6 just gets bad results regardless of your setup / CPU power. I don't recall any of these emulators having particularly advanced screen modes or the option of choosing different interfaces (like DirectX vs. OpenGL or whatever, or audio / input interfaces).

Don't recall if / where there's objective information about it, but there's the possibility of input lag here also. There's also xpadder (which used to be free).

actually, it is Xpadder I use - I didn't notice any lag, but then again, I'm not the hardcorest of players tbh.

Thanks! Totally fixed my issue. Plugged in USB controller it saw it right away and runs perfect.
Does anyone know if there is a way to setup just using keyboard for the controller buttons? Just an added bonus, it would be nice to not even have to use a controller (since I am just testing games before I run them on my real X68k :) )
