Best RGB mod currently for the N64

Post by andykara2003 »

Hi, I'm in the process of RGB modding some consoles and some members on here kindly helped me with making the right decisions about modding my SNES.

I'm getting an N64 RGB modded now and am wondering if anyone knows what the best mod is for this console currently. My previous one had the THS7314 amp chip but things move along on the modding scene & I'm guessing there's a fair possibility another mod has surpassed this one by now...

Cheers :)

As far as I know the THS7314 mod is still the preferred mod for early NTSC consoles (NUS-CPU-01 to -04). I got mine modded with it a couple months ago. There's also a universal mod for PAL consoles, but I wouldn't bother with PAL hardware.

Thanks Blizzz that's good to know. There's also a newish mod from the Otaku Store that will work with any N64:

Does this mod give as good a picture as the THS7314 mod do you know?

Ah, I think that's the same mod I meant with "universal PAL mod". I wasn't sure if it also works on any NTSC console. Not sure if there's a difference in picture quality, the only comparisons I've seen are useless like photos of an LCD TV without Framemeister etc.

Cheers for that Blizzz. Does anyone else know if there's a difference in quality between the Okatu "RGB for all" mod and the THS7314 amp mod?

I have not personally witnessed this mod in action, but I have heard comments on other boards that the THS7314 mod is still better.

That's fantastic thanks very much! Does anyone know of any highly regarded modders in these forums (I'm in the UK)

I had no idea that the 7314 amp is supposedly better than the 1CHIP output...
tbh I can't tell the difference from the shots in retrorgb's site

The idea that the 7314 amp is better than the regular 1CHIP output is disputed.

See this thread on assemblergames for more info.

That's not what they're debating. Bypassing the 1CHIP's internal RGB amp will improve the video quality.

Lifting the legs and pulling RGB from the 1-Chips encoder and passing it through 75 ohm resistors out to the AV Port will give you the same result as using the THS7314. It is not the amp that is increasing the sharpness but the fact that you are bypassing the RGB out circuit that comes after the encoder. The only time you would want to use the THS7314 is if you have the translucent center bar since bypassing the encoder makes it far less visible (you can also use a cap on the power regulator to achieve this but its not always as effective depending on your monitor). Most 1-Chips do not have the center bar issue thus making the THS7314 bypass unnecessary in most cases. I think out of the 10 or so 1-Chips I have had in my possession only one had this issue. Do the basic bypass first, if you don't have the center bar then you are good to go.

I understand what they're debating. So theoretically yes, but not with the circuit you are selling which results in an incorrect black level.

He might also want to consider the N64 HDMI mod coming out sometime in the future: http://retroactive.be/tech_n64_hdmi.php

You should also start giving credit to the people you get your information from Bob, especially if you plan to sell things based on that information. Remember this from 8 months ago?

I definitely don't mind the price. I'd pay the extra bucks to not have to wire up that IC. :D

Honestly Kyle, I thought I offered to give you credit and link back to your blog, but then you took your blog down. Let me know what you'd like me to call you (Skips / Kyle) and a website link to promote and I'll happily add it to the 1CHIP page. Sorry if I offended you...I'm usually extremely diligent about posting links to other people's sites and giving credit where it's due.

My e-mail has not changed and I personally would like that if its not too much to ask. As for my personal blog, I took it down because people were taking the info I was posting without citing their sources or were claiming it as their own work. I spent a lot of time answering questions on that blog via e-mail from other modders/people looking to get into the hobby so it was pretty frustrating to see people doing that (there were days id spend 4-5 hours answering questions in detail). I started posting most actual modding info exclusively on neo-geo.com so if you need something to direct to you can tell people they can pm me there (or here is fine too since I started posting more on shmups). I might create a new blog one day but I don't see it happening anytime soon since I have decided to stop taking commissioned mod work and wont have as many new projects to post.

Done, happy to do so! Let me know if you launch another blog or a site for commissioned mod work and I'll promote it properly.

Sadly, I just had to watermark all the pics on my site for that same reason. 90% of the people who used my pics linked back to the site, so I was totally cool with it, but a few people tried to pass them off as their own, use them for eBay auctions, etc.

Love the solution retrorgb.

Don't suppose you'll be making a similar solution for the PC Engine?

Broken on the Neo-Geo.com forums has a ready-made solution for all PCE/TG-16 systems: http://bit.ly/XAYebT
