READ THE SIG VARMINTS

Immortally volatile intensity and technique. Man v machine shooting terror distilled.
Would be even better with a little tightening up of parameters but its ferocious attack burns away all impurities.

Gun.Smoke (played with the NES Advantage)
1941 on the Super Grafx looks great, but I have never played it.

19XX comes most immediately to mind.
Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
Was it ever ported to the consoles? I recall seeing 1943 Kai in the PS2 Capcom Classics Collection but not that one.

Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
Nope, 19XX remains an arcade exclusive, unfortunately.
Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
I've been watching a long play of 19XX since you posted and it looks fantastic. I tend to prefer games like this one - good balance between number of bullets & room to maneuver - to the claustrophobic designs of recent years.
Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
19XX, Dimahoo, Progear (and hell, 1944 just for its ZZ Top-blagging OST)... quite a chunk of good unported shooting on CPS2. And there's its beltscrollers, haha.

Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
19XX is actually one of the VERY few shmups I first encountered "in the wild", specifically at a hotel poolside in Florida...I can still remember the "Day-to-naaaa!" theme from a nearby machine playing constantly in the background, right next to Tekken 2 and War Gods, and it must be going on 20 years ago by now. Seeing its name again made my eventual discovery of MAME that much more exciting, heh.
Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
For me it's giga wing, but I do remember fondly of 1943.
Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
Progear, giga wing and varth.I do like mars matrix also, but it's to brutal for me to go in my top 3.

Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
It's a toss up between Gun.smoke and Exed Exes for me, Last Duel is ok. Apart from those I'm not really that keen on a lot of their STG output to be honest.

19xx and Forgotten Worlds are my favorites, but I bet I would add Varth if I actually took time to play it. All told, Capcom was a pretty decent shmup dev in their time.

I often give Gun.Smoke a run when I am out at mom's as it is one of the few shmups there.
I've never been super fond of the control scheme, and I tend to only use four of the six shooting patterns. Could be why I've never got past stage nine.

Gun.Smoke is too hard.
I'll go with Section Z, it's cool, it's decently designed and it shoudl've gotten a proper sequel.

I find the basic three buttons are more than sufficient for the game's duration. 1+2 and 2+3 can be handy but are secondary to good positioning and sweeping. 1+3 divides firepower and likely your attention with it, neither being a good idea.Stevens wrote:I tend to only use four of the six shooting patterns. Ha! It isn't just me then. Was never a fan of the divided fire power.BIL wrote:I find the basic three buttons are more than sufficient for the game's duration. 1+2 and 2+3 can be handy but are secondary to good positioning and sweeping. 1+3 divides firepower and likely your attention with it, neither being a good idea.Stevens wrote:I tend to only use four of the six shooting patterns. UN Squardon obviously. I think the SNES version is actually better than the arcade versions (at least for single player). Too bad the SNES version doesn't have a 2 player option.

Re: your favorite Capcom shmup
I'd rate them UN Squadron SNES > Carrier Air Wing > UN Squadron arcade, with the console game's lack of constantly-depleting health helping put it on top.pegboy wrote:I think the SNES version is actually better than the arcade versions
1941's my favorite, though. Savage World War II air combat with a distinctive Capcom design.

19XX - because good memories. It's not the greatest shmup, but it's got its own vibe.
Though not exactly a shmup I also love the MD version of MERCS.

19XX is so sexy.
I saw that game in Florida, and I was like, "aww shit, I need this"
And then shmups.

Sadly this isn’t my poster, but I really want one.

Probably my favorite Capcom developed shooter, though Dimahoo is my favorite on Capcom hardware.

Varth is my favourite, closely followed by 19XX.
Eco Fighters is also really nice and quite a bit underappreciated.

I'd have to say its Street Fighter.
