I recently discovered Zugya, a 360-degree shooter where you strategically blow up starships to get points. I'm really impressed by it: It's nicely replayable, is varied enough even though you can tell the budget is small, and it's got cool tunes
It appears to be freeware, but I'm not certain since I can't read Japanese. I got it from vector.co.jp which I believe only has legit downloads. But does anyone know what the status is?
I assume you are referring to Zugya DX right? Which is an enhanced PC port of the original Zugya which was created for X68000 computers. I havent played DX much, but I quite like the X68K original, though X68k Bosconian has way better music and tends to get more play time.

I was thinking of just plain ol' Zugya. I've actually been playing the X68000 one a bit (me and segasonicfan pooled some dough and bought a Sharp ), and then stuck the Windows 95 version on my 90s PC. The X68K version is brilliant. I wouldn't have expected it to be freeware in 1995, but what's the status of it now?
Well original copies do exist, I have one. It was released by Sprite who did a LOT of X68K doujins. Would have been sold at comiket, doujin shops, and mail order mostly. Quite sure Sprite made all old X68K games freeware at some point though as Vector is quite picky about what's uploaded there.

Yeah it looks like what I have actually is a demo. I think that fan remake is free though. Anyway, everyone should play this! It's fantastic! Here's a video:
You can actually buy this game (and a couple more) from the dev, called SPRITE, at DLSite so not sure if it's really freeware and more like the old shareware. It also has another pretty nice hori called XADLAK Plus.
Man Xadlak is a game that's had way too many versions lol. Stage 1 in that version was the original stage 1 in the original 4 stage X68K version, however in the later 6 stage versions, it was moved to level 5 or so. And now its back to being Stage 1 again. LOL.
Speaking of Sprite, Silk Road 2 is the best Zelda-ish game on the X68k, not a shooter, but highly recommended for doujin game fans. Note Silk Road 1 was a very simple platformer...
