I watched Apocalypse Now for the second time after a 15-year hiatus.

I had watched it the first time with my girlfriend, and had rented the Redux version by accident.
She had found it very long, and had sighed quite a few times during the movie. That definitely had not helped me like it at all. It had kind of left me with a sour taste in the mouth all these years, and I didn't really know why.

I watched it alone this time, the theatrical release, and was totally mesmerized by it. I felt it was pretty much perfect now: the pace, the trippiness, the eerie trip upriver. It felt Herzogy to me, which is always a great thing. One of the best movies I've watched in the last few years, and I watch 3-4 movies/week.

For context, I must say though that unlike most around here, I liked Conrad's "Heart of Darkness". It's pretty much a compulsory reading for ESL students when you go to what we call CÉGEP, essentially 2 years to "prepare for" College. I taught it a few times and it was never a huge hit...

Hilarious. I didn't realise this was part of the horror-comedy genre, that long forgotten 80s artform, and wouldn't have touched it with a bargepole unless a Chinese girl who neither understands western humour or horror-comedy hadn't suggested I watch it. I was sitting there the whole time laughing saying "this is a hoot", and she kept saying "it's not funny, it's scary!"

Well no, it's funny. The director, who apparently cut his teeth at Troma, knows his references well: Mayor MacReady and the Henenlotter bar (told you he had a canon!) being two prominent examples.

It's an odd thing to watch a movie intending to be schlock, playing up to it in the absolute, but firmly gripped from a directorial perspective. I mean, it's nothing special but you could do worse than crack open some beers and invite your friends to watch it for laughs. One of the more entertaining no-brainers I've seen in a while.

I've seen it a ton of times. It's well written, acted, has an incredible soundtrack, and has aged amazingly well. Easily Cusak's best film. Minnie Driver and Dan Aykroyd are strong as well.

It never gets old.

It's a good enough movie that it makes me momentarily forget how very, very annoying I find John's sister Joan.

Manhunter (1986) - Awesome. I've watched the current Hannibal show, it was neat to see other versions of the same characters. Great soundtrack too. Maybe I should check out The Keep.

Arkin reminds me a bit of Jeffery Tambor in his role as the therapist.

I am not Joan Cusaks biggest fan either, but hearing her go from ordering thousands or rounds of ammunition to talking about soup is comical. And I love the scene where she is taking down the office.

I can't wait for Hollywood to decide they need to remake it

If you haven't seen CGI animated movies in a long time, you'll go back and remember it being better. Sure it had that Britney Spears number in it, but it is a lot better than the movies today. Last CGI movie I saw was Planes, and before that Brave(which I totally hated once the mom turned into that bear). They seem to have this notion that we need to feel good about ourselves and that we can do anything we set our mind to just set in different settings over and over again.

Arkin and Tambor mentioned together makes me think of The In-Laws. Tambor wasn't in it, but he was in a Psych episode that played homage to it. The In-Laws is good stuff. I miss Peter Falk.

Black Death (2010) Fourteenth century England, the black death rampages. God's knight Eddard Stark and his band of killers must investigate possible heretic activities in Lady Melisandre's suspiciously plague-free village. Surprise: it's not just the plague they should be afraid of, LOLOL!

As a bleak, raw medieval trudge into Wicker Man territory, this is certainly satisfactory. Most of note is the deceptively observant and troubling horror at its core. Smarter movie than it lets on, with a memorably tragic finish. Altogether, pretty good/10.

I don't find the "office take-down" scene to be that great, but I really enjoy the soup scene, and I also enjoy when she's obviously dealing with some idiot CSR on the other end of the line ("No, no, no. That's not right...") and has to get *really* pissed with them. Normally, that scene might bug the crap out of me, but I think that the role fits her pretty well, it's well-written, and she handles it ably. I'm usually not a fan of foul language, but this movie's got plenty of it, and I don't mind it, really.

Dude appreciate the kind suggestion, but I'm really never watching Robots again for the rest of my life. I remember the original experience all too vividly, no need for a firsthand revisit.

Dead Silence

I was completely suckered by the strapline on the poster art into clicking this one, and 30 minutes later and I clicked it off. Slow, boring, poorly made and acted. Shit, basically.

Fright Night

Colin Farrell was rubbish in this the same he was rubbish in Total Recall. I don't really blame him for not putting any effort into schlock, but I also felt he was slightly miscast as the Fright Night vampire - he was bland and boring as the character.

Anyway, this wasn't a terrible watch, but really weird. This movie starts like it's in the middle! After forty minutes you realise the whole thing about the original Fright Night was the intrigue and build up to Jerry Dandridge being a vampire was the play of most of the script - here they screw all the build up and get straight down to business.

The acting was average to awful: the guy with glasses who plays Brewster's friend (from Superbad iirc) absolutetly stinks, I hope he never gets hired again. David Tennant was great though, enough so that I could accept him being a new wave Peter Vincent, and rather funny.

No way near as good as the original of course. I wouldn't even recommend watching it unless you really have nothing better to do. But the blonde is a hottie, goddamn.

Oh, and the cameo was awesome! That guy looks amazing.

Raw Deal (1986) Nondescript 80s mob/renegade cop flick, perfectly tailored for a more forgettable Clint Eastwood outing, amusingly mangled and pulverised into something marginally worthwhile by the inexorable bunker buster that is AHNULD Prime. Perfectly capable heavy Robert Davi is reduced to a pencil-necked little pussy by mere proximity to the man, who demolishes both stage and players with customary good humour. Shooting is big and lame, but there's a decent car chase and Arnie really beats the shit out of a few mooks Double Dragon-style. Also starring that bald head fuck from Murphy Brown who really bites it good, another small plus. Utterly minor entry in 1980s Ahnuld canon, only watched because it popped up on Youtoob right after Running Man finished. Fuckin' technology today, I swear it's amazing.

kinda off-topic, but one of my favorite guitarists, Ron Jarzombek, wrote an entire (2011) prog metal cd on paper scored to different horror-comedy films - slither being one of them.

Robots is dreck sure, but I wouldn't behate anybody for liking it. Having seen things like Nabari no Ou and Shakugan no Shana, maybe bits and pieces of Medea Goes to Jail, I have a deep appreciation for how bad things can be. Worse than you can imagine. Darker than black.

It just amuses me seeing Sky talk about it having devastating aftereffects; "Hey maybe you should try this popular and not-so-bad cartoon for emo ten year old girls about magicians decapitating things. Being meguca is suffering!" "Nah I see a tasty turd sammich over there I'ma gonna try that out instead. THIS TIME IT MIGHT BE GOOD."

Will definitely get on the Slither train post haste. I wanted to see it... except I completely forgot that it existed for the past 18 years.

So you haven't seen How to Train Your Dragon 2, Wreck it Ralph, or Frozen? Saying that any of these movies stomp all over Robots is an understatement. I found it fairly enjoyable, but weak in comparison to most of Pixar's movies, including Brave. Brave isn't Pixar's best, but I still found it to be good. I found it to get better after the part where mom turned into a bear and liked that the movie wasn't about defying parents like the trailers made it out to be. I haven't seen planes, but trailers and reviews give me the impression that it's mediocre.

I wasn't saying it was, though it is a spin off of what is arguably one of their weaker fiims. I just mentioned Pixar since they were one of the better companies with 3D animation. Aside from Planes, Disney actually put some nice 3D animated stuff out with Frozen, Tangled, and Wreck it Ralph. Dreamworks also puts out some nice stuff, though they put out some weaker ones as well. As far as other companies go, The Lego movie (done by the people who did Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, I think) was a nice surprise as well. Anyway, I disagree that Robots is better than a lot of the more recent animations and I feel it even pales to stuff like the Croods.

recently relocated to Japan, where I no longer get Netflix. been rummaging for halfway decent full-length flicks on youtube and have been on an anime kick in recent days...

Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture!

I tried watching the original subtitled version for study purposes, but I couldn't hold out... The English voice acting is so good -- especially Billy Kane and the Vega wannabe, Hauer (the scene where he's pointing out the differences between he and Jammin's fighting philosophies is one of my favorite in the movie). And I always liked the abrupt change (degradation) in animation style during the fight scenes. Some early day favorites are definitely best left in memory, but this has thankfully aged pretty well.

Invisible Target
I enjoyed this crime movie. Wasn't the greatest, but a nice cast and a nice story.
Started watching Toy Story 2 after that but fell alseep about 20 minutes in. As far as CGI animated movies go, I had the problem of Shrek being released for home media shortly before school got out that year. So yea, I might be jaded a little since I saw in one week that movie 6 times.

haven't watched anything new lately, but figured I'd post this up in case anyone here is a blu ray collector.

just got the holy mountain blu-ray in the mail which I paid $15 for on amazon... which is strange because it was out of print and fetching a price between $70-100+ on ebay/amazon for the past 6+ months. oddly enough it was re-released on my bday (07/07).

I have the Jodorowsky dvd box. Not really planning on leaping on the blu rays, even if they are cheap unless they add something utterly incredible to the experience. Quite often blu rays don't.
