Einhander: Great game or overrated?

I really like it because of the way it handled weapons. I think it's a great game, though I haven't put the amount of time I'd need to put in it to really rate it. From what I played I wasn't disappointed. I wouldn't say it's overrated though, very few gamers know about it. I also think as a shmup it's more casual friendly, that's got to do with the check points and cinematic quality most likely.

I mean compared with other horis like gradius where there are fewer checkpoints. Recovery is also easier than most other horis actually. Apart from cave games, I don't know too many horis with instant respawns.

If by over-rated you mean "Gets some minor attention and reference along with Ikaruga by the mainstream" than yeah.

All shmups should be over-rated.

It's simply not possible for Einhänder to be "overrated"... it's a really well-made game. Easily one of the best "console shmups" ever made, definitely on par with all the other greats like R-Type Delta, Gradius Gaiden, etc.

I haven't gotten very far in this game, but I'm extremely impressed by the richness of its backstory (the manual's got tons of shit in it), the multitudes of boss patterns, and numerous secrets and stage branches. Also, I actually like the graphics as far as PSX games go.

I have some issues with the controls, though. Namely, the vulcan gun is kind of obnoxious to manage the angle of (I wish it would lock in place when you held down the button), and the ship that equips two weapons can't use its forward machine gun when its got two pods, leading to some annoying deaths. I also don't like how it always automatically switches to whatever weapon you just picked up.
