Gary Lineker's a fucking moron. Only twenty men in costumes chase the piece of leather. The other two stand about in a rectangle.

Ha ha, it's true.d3vak wrote: Anyway, I would also like to point out the revival of Gary Lineker's famous quote:Gary Lineker wrote:Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win.

Anyway folks, no matter how bad you think your coverage was, get a load of this shit:

Bar the fact you'd bang her until her lights went out (that's a euphemism for passionate aggressive sex, not GBH) it was nothing short of an absolute fiasco - the worst football coverage I've ever seen. It's actually a shame, since I've never been in a country that celebrated the World Cup on such a grand scale: the entire city was covered top to bottom in billboards and advertising. All McDonald's here are 24 hours and were promoting all games live, and as a result were transformed into World Cup fast food restaurants. Every coffee shop, bar, KTV, club, hotel - everything really - was in on it: Life sized football standees, posters, free drinks during matches. I was amazed at the effort for a tournament that you had to be up in the dead of night to appreciate.
But that coverage was so, so wrong.
I would have killed to have Lineker and Co. compared to this, but I had to settle for the BBC iPlayer catchups.

LOLOLOLOL Thanks for those pics Skykid! It sure seems like a TV show I would laugh about for 2 minutes, then change the channel and never go back. I send my condolences yo you.
It seems like the German team behaved quite well with the local people (Santo Andre's), everyone is talking about that around here:

Re: World Cup 2014: BRASIL
Ok, my wrap up on the tournament:
Not the best World Cup.
South Africa was much more eventful and had more in the way of drama and flair. The refereeing and general conduct of the players wasn't anywhere near the level of failure it was here, discounting the ultraviolence of the Holland / Spain final.
Brasil was really marred by unsporting conduct: that was prominent for me. There were few games that didn't have a ridiculous amount of theatrics and even fewer referees who seemed able to control it - although the referreeing did improve in the later rounds.
In terms of the football itself, something was missing. Didn't have a Tevez half-way line rocket goal, didn't have Brasil's blinding volley or Forlan's semi-final masterpiece. More goals were scored, but there was less creativity on the field.
Probably my biggest irk was the way the match ups fell into place. The opening round was good because there were so many underdog teams qualifying, only to then be selectively and predictably beaten by having to face stronger teams. This of course made all the stronger teams road to the semi finals that much easier, leaving all the little guys truly in the dust after the quarters. Brazil, Holland, Argentina, Germany - a bit boring isn't it?
And Germany played superbly in the final, but they had to: Argentina as predicted was their first difficult match. Their road to the final was a cakewalk. Portugal were shit, Ghana a non-threat, France absolutely useless, Brazil weren't home... no problem.
I felt bad for Messi not getting the World Cup winner's title, but for me Argentina had their chances to score, too many times, and missed them all. You can't do that in a WC final, and therefore Germany deserved to win on their superb goal. But in expertise I felt they were quite evenly matched.
Best things about the tournament:
Goal line technology: good. Works well, needs to stay.
All USA's games and their superman goalkeeper.
A great semifinal and final between Holland/Argentina and Argentina/Germany.
Lots of goals.
Suarez biting people.
A Fifa official breaking his ankle celebrating and England goal.
Some good underdog displays from Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico.
tl;dr I hope the next one is better.
Not the best World Cup.

I'd add a few random things...
Best goal of the tournament: James Rodriguez vs Uruguay.
Messi getting the Golden Ball... He did score a "golazo" vs Iran to make his team advance to the next round, but the man of the tournament?
German felt strong from day one, won it. There's justice in that although I was rooting for Argentina.
Muchos años después, frente al pelotón de fusilamiento...
Re: World Cup 2014: BRASIL
Germany were strong, and a very solid unit. It's just a bit of a downer to consider that team had no real pressure until the final, or else we might of had some better games. Honestly, they practically slept their way through, owing to how poor Portugal, France and Brazil were. Total non-threats.KindGrind wrote: German felt strong from day one, won it. Re: World Cup 2014: BRASIL
I can understand that it’s a bit difficult to remain unbiased when it comes to major sport events but why don’t you want to give Germany more credit? Sure, Portugal were extreme underachievers compared to former tournaments but the USA and also Ghana (at least until the problem of the bonus payments came up) were quite convincing. Algeria might have been the strongest African side at this year’s World Cup and would’ve been a challenge to any other team as well. During the quarter finals Germany did finally find their rhythm and made the game against France look easier than it probably was. Brazil would’ve likely failed to win the World Cup even without facing Germany but I can’t think of any other side that would’ve thrashed them so badly.Skykid wrote: Germany were strong, and a very solid unit. Argentina of 2014, on the other side, seemed to share too many similarities with the runners-up of 1990: a star who has already passed his peak and who failed to deliver, the inability to score goals against stronger opponents, and therefore the need to win games by penalty shootouts. The former two World Cup finals between Germany and Argentina (1986 and 1990) were both very satisfying in the end because on both occasions the better side won. The Germany-Argentina final of 2014 appeared like a seamless continuation of this tradition.

Re: World Cup 2014: BRASIL
I am sure the netherlands would most likely have won against germany. There is a lot of room behind their defense, which they compensate by getting neuer (who was great by the way) to come out of his goal.Against really fast players (like Robben), this would be a high risk play.
They would have been vulnarable, to bad now we will never know
That being sad, i am kinda glad that germany won in the final. They tried to play the best soccer.

Re: World Cup 2014: BRASIL
Chilavert is an utter legend, and imo the the only goalkeeper in the history of the game in running besides Neuer for the title of the greatest goalkeeper. They both elevate the position to an unreal level. My first football memory is me and my dad (we both always played keepers in games, best position on the pitch) cheering on Chilavert defending a penalty in either one of the world cups or world cup qualifiers.d3vak wrote:dex, just forgive him for he doesn't know what he's talking about. Apparently he's a pundit and commentator for some paraguay channel now, and as crazy entertaining as he was on the pitch. Wish I spoke Spanish/Portuguese.
edit: And I just gotta wax philosophical a little about Neuer. He is utterly incredible on the pitch in every single aspect of the goalkeeping game, controls his entire half in a way centre backs wish they could, and his team is at all times one player up over the opponents thanks to him. He knows how to intimidate his opponents and show that the only way they can hope to beat him is by being lucky, not by being better than him. Upstanding guy off the pitch too, runs a children's charity.
basically I wanna make sweet, sweet love to the man. No homo.
He should have won the Golden Ball instead of Messi. Or at least FIFA should give it to James Rodriguez or something smh
Re: World Cup 2014: BRASIL
No idea, who this Neuer fellow is, but the mention of Chilavert reminded me of my all-time favourite soccer player - Rene Higuita.

Nah, not really.gbaplayer wrote:You serious?Pinehed wrote:No idea, who this Neuer fellow is,

i realize who he is, but that's only because I've read few last posts of this thread. Haven't seen even one game of this WC. I think I may have watched maybe 5 soccer matches in last 10 years - and that only as an excuse to drink. I don't really care about soccer these days, that's just something I liked as a kid (late 80s - mid 90s).He´s our keeper. Where have you been during the 4 weeks of WC 2014?

You guessed wrong, but whatever.
Come to think of it, I'd still watch gridiron (at least highlights, if not full game) over soccer 99% of the time. Ok, I won't spam your thread any further, have a nice day too.
