Just picked up a BVM-20F1U...I'm dumb, how to hook it up?

Post by Jono »

I've just picked up a Sony BVM-20F1U and I was wondering if you wonderful people could assist me since i'm a bit thick and I don't really know how to hook it p.

Specifically i'd like to hook up my Sega Genesis (U.S. model 1), Sega Saturn (U.S. model 1), and Neo Geo AES (JPN).

I know that I need the BNC to SCART (female) adapter that hooks to the BVM and will allow me to interchangeably plug in my consoles into this one female adapter, ideally via a SCART switch.

However, my lack of understanding is from the side of JP21, and the pin outs of all these consoles. My basic question is: Can I just buy the following cables:

http://www.retrogamingcables.com/sega-m ... -lead.html
(Can't find a Saturn SCART)
http://www.retrogamingcables.com/snk-ne ... -lead.html

into a U.S. system, into a plug like this that hooks into my BVM:

http://www.retrogamingcables.com/sony-p ... r-bnc.html

Also how and where do these hook up into the rear of the back? I have a general idea but I just want to be sure

Thanks! Sorry to bother with this, guys.

First, third, fifth, seventh BNC plugs from top on the basic analogue board on the right.

The cables are fine. JP21 doesn't concern you if you don't buy cables with this specfic layout. JP21 only refers to the "output end" of the cable, not to the consoles....

Also, make sure you set the BVM to use External Sync, otherwise the picture will look distorted.

Oh wow, I didn't expect you to reply! Thanks for the help. I got this BVM upon your recommendation in this article:

http://www.tested.com/tech/gaming/45671 ... tro-games/

All I do is color coordinate the cables by matching them up to the "In" inputs ? If I wanted to hook up my PS2 into one of these things, how would I go about doing that?

Also is there a cheaper place to source these cables or is this the place i've got to go?

Thanks for the help!

yes, connecting your sources isn't the hard part. You have to configure the input correctly as well (RGB with external sync. It's most certainly preset to YPbPr instead). And geometry and convergence calibration after that.

Don't forget to terminate the outputs!

Standard 75 ohm BNC terminators. Here's an ebay link or just search for "bnc terminator 75":

you might end up with non standard brightness or contrast levels. It works without them, but it messes with the picture levels. You can certainly start using your set before you get these termination plugs, but the $10 are a good investment.

Sorry for the dumb question, but what does terminate the connections mean? Should I just plug these BNC 75 ohms on the unused connectors?

yes, you put them on the outputs right next to the inputs you're using. The BVMs are designed to be chained up (so another monitor is supposed to be connected on the output BNC ports) and if you're just using a single one, you're to terminate to outputs.

In case anyone is wondering, on PVMs/BVMs with built-in connectors, the outputs are usually terminated automatically, which is denoted by a zig-zag symbol next to the output.

Only PVMs have auto-termination. With BVMs you are expected to use manual terminators.

Sometimes the auto-termination can fail on PVMs. If you are getting a picture that is extremely bright, try placing a terminator on the output to see if the brightness/contrast returns to normal levels.

There are BVM models which are derived from PVM monitors, but with added SDI; these have auto-termination.

You're right. I keep forgetting about those particular ones because they're pretty rare.

How would I hook up a NES using only composite, but using the superior comb filter to make it better?

Similarly, how would I hook it up for component? Do I have the proper card for these connections? I know I need Phono-to-BNC connectors but I just don't know where to plug them...

Sorry for the continued questions! I'm finally going to have this thing hooked up after two weeks of waiting!

Composite can be connected to any BNC input. You just have to configure the input accordingly in the menu.

Component gets connect just like RGBs - just without the Sync. Or you connect it to the 2nd YUV input on the extension board. Both is fine.

do you have a control box for that bvm? you need one if you dont because that bvm doesn have any internal controls.
