Are there any shmups with a boat theme?

Post by qaotik »

I was playing Gunroar the other day and atleast to me it felt like it was missing some goold old sprites!

So how about it, is this really the first shmup where you control a boat? If so it feels like a missed opportunity, you could have the second player controlling a hover craft with added abilities (land) and what about the power-ups; a buddy water skiing behind you.

Or maybe im just crazy?

Perhaps, but it sounds somewhat intriguing.

Sounds like a fair shout, SWIV worked with one ground and one air vehicle so its a concept that would work.

The only problem overall would be variety as your limited to the wet stuff and not different terrains.

Well In the Hunt and the absolutely horrendous Sauro let you control subs.

You should check out Cobra Triangle on the NES. It's not quite a shmup but not quite anything else. I guess the closest comparison is that it's sort of like Captain Skyhawk only in a boat instead of a jet.

Most other boat action games I know of are stuff like Gunboat, PTO series, not really shmups at all but awesome games just the same.

In the Hunt (Kaitei Daisensou) is full of water. Darius is filled with fish and obscure water animals, too.

I'll say, I used to go fishing all the time but I don't think I ever reeled in a Curious Chandelier or an Emperor Fossil.

There's Deep Blue for PC-Engine, which is set underwater. It also has the distinction of being one of the worst and most frustrating shooters ever created.

SWIV is SWIV. That's the title of the game.

Strike Force Hydra for the GBA has you controlling a boat.

Gulf Storm in the arcade has you on a jet ski for part of the game.

Burning Force in the arcade and Genny has you controlling a water/hover ski.

Mariner (Arcade) has you controlling a sub.

Aqua Jack (Arcade) has you controlling a hovercraft over a river.

There's a legend that says that swiv stands for Silkworm in vertical.

Turboat on MSX is a shmup where you control a boat. It has a isometric view and an original control scheme, but no power ups.

This game is AWESOME, I can't believe I forgot about it.

What's Strike Force Hydra? Is it related in any way to the Hydra arcade game?

Well, here is a screenshot of Turboat if anyone is interested

Now looking at it, maybe that thing isn't a boat at all... but well, it floats in a river, and the game is called turBOAT ....

Nope. It's actually a pretty bad vertical shooter. Levels alternate between your standard shmup level, and what could best be described as the speed levels in Gradius games turned vertically. I 1cc'd the thing on the first go-round, and it's really not worth it. If I remember correctly, the arcade Hydra wasn't too shabby.

Strong recommendation. I second it. This one makes me feel like I'm stuck under water and need air.

Oh, and what's the name of that terrible boat shooting game that came out just a month or so after the XBox came out? Definitely not a shmup.

Blood Wake(Xbox) is like Twisted Metal, but on the water. Much better than TM in my opinion. (3D mission based )

SWIV=FirePower 2000. SWIV is also on the Mega Drive, and Firepower 2000 is available for the US market on the SNES. (standard vert shmup)

Here are some shooters linked to the water element in one way or the other.

Aqua Jack (TAITO) Arcade Rail shooter with a speed boat

Darius Series (Arcade/Various Consoles & computers) you take on huge Mecha fish & various other weird mechanized, oceanic creatures.

Gynoug (1991) The 2nd stage takes place almost entirely underwater, while fighting against various obscure sea vermins.

Hydra (ATARI) another Arcade / AMIGA / Atari Lynx, Rail shooter with a speed boat

In The Hunt (1993)(PSX/Saturn/Arcades) Impressive Submarine shooter with huge end level Bosses. Some of the levels are a sunken city, an under water assault at the polar ice caps, a vertical ascent while being chased by an Ekatondahir / Titan & a visit at the tectonic continental plates)

Mega Blast (TAITO)(Arcade) The 1st level takes place under water.

Image

Polaris (1980) A primitive Submarine shoot’em up, emulated in MAME)

Sauro (1987)( Tecfri) A sub horizontal shooter

Image

Sub Hunter (1977) Ancient Arcade Sub shooter from TAITO

SWIV (1991)(AMIGA) Technically Not a boat game, but your jeep does turn into a speed boat for respectable amount of time at some point in the game.

Thunder Force Series – There are at least 3 stages that take place under water.

Here are all the Sub / Boat shooters available in MAME:

In The Hunt

Sea Wolf
Sea Wolf II
Subs
Subroc3D
Tomahawk 777
The Deep
Wolf Pack

And then there are also some unknown PC submarine shooters:
