confirm: cyberdemons are still fucking terrifying in maps without circle strafe room!

The Shores of Hell is an incredible set of maps, Containment Area and Halls of the Damned in particular. So many pincer points to exploit.

Muramasa Rebirth [Vita].

Just started playing as Monohime, just beat the first boss. Seems cool so far.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Still playing Mario Kart 7, 8, and Mario Golf World Tour, but I also started playing Mutant Mudds 3DS again now that it has the haunted levels from the deluxe version. I'm liking the new levels quite a bit so far. They are a nice change of pace with the inability to destroy enemies permanently.

I've just played The Ultimate DOOM and DOOM II so far, unfortunately my machine bogs down a bit too much with Final's TNT and Plutonia. Pretty much all of the original's three episodes are amazing via BDOOM, plus the fourth for a decent challenge.

Figures that when I finally upgrade my PC it'll probably be for a 1993 game, haha.

speaking about upgrades, I've finally bought a new computer after more than a decade.. lol...

Brutal Doom is doable so far in Ultimate Doom. Too bad there isn't a button to reload the shotgun, the auto reload always gets me by surprise

There should be a dedicated reload key - I think by default it's "R." Go to the customise controls menu, and check the very bottom for BDOOM specific commands (reload, quick kick, etc).

You also need the reload key to alternate between the Berserker fists' two modes. Rip And Tear executes a fatality with every kill, granting a health bonus (tougher monster = bigger bonus). Smash does more explosive impact damage. Melee combat is way the hell more fun in BDOOMv019, see here for the three hit combo and its astonishingly violent left hook finish. It's worth mastering the timing, then whiffing the first two hits and moving in with the hook. Small/midsized enemies will be smashed to bits, Archviles will be stunned out of their flamecasting, and Barons/HKs will get socked right in the balls and set up for another, likely fatal hook. It has a huge horizontal sweep, multiple hits and considerable range, so with some finesse you can land a glancing blow while keeping out of an enemy's line of fire.

Note also that Rip And Tear lets you pick up exploding barrels with the Alt Fire key, and put them down with another press (or throw them with Primary Fire). You can also kick over DOOM II's flaming barrels to create a quick flame hazard. There's tons of stuff like this to mess about with. Try chainsawing a dead Mancubus and stealing his flamethrowers, for instance.

Just make sure you're in Rip and Tear mode when booting your captive buddy while Berserked, or he'll die on you. ^_~ (or at least that seems to happen to me in v019 in E3M4 "HOUSE OF PAIN")

Try booting a zombie or Imp with the fire key held for stylin' profilin' juggling action. Do the same to a barrel after kicking it into a crowd for super stylish Die Hard funnins. Also, kick fuckers down stairs or off high ledges to splatter 'em on impact. You can even kick Barons right in the balls, though it's better to Berserk left-hook 'em for the same result.

Meanwhile...

Just picked up Bioshock 1 DRM-free for a buck on the Humble Bundle and I'm playing it for the first time.

...this is supposed to be a horror game? It's so damned goofy! How am I supposed to take the wrench zombies seriously when they're accusing me of being a freeloading parasite?

@ BIL:

I wonder what BDOOM + Fractal DOOM would be like.

(Fractal DOOM is very nearly BDOOM already, but the enemy variations are servicing its unique theme, rather than BDOOM's, so in that aspect they aren't compatible - not without a lot of extra sprite work anyway.)
Mischief Maker wrote:...this is supposed to be a horror game? It's so damned goofy!
Yeah, I was thinking about this yesterday. Such a slide in quality from System Shock 2.

The Verge's Adi Robertson puts it well:
BioShock further developed Ken Levine’s ideas about extreme ideologies but dramatically cut down on gameplay, and Dead Space drew on its dark, cramped spaceships and adapted its hive mind religion. But neither can match the original for sheer staying power.
Actually the idiosyncratic and goofy personalities in Bioshock aren't too different from those in System Shock 2 - though I feel that many people in SS2's cast had some great lines and moment even when they got very little time to develop. What's mainly different is the story arc, which Adi talks about well enough. A lot of people thought Bioshock had an interesting story, so I'll leave it to you to decide whether or not it was good or bad. But I think that SS2 is better as its storyline sets up a horror game, rather than a demonstration of ideologies. So that takes us back to fuse your and Adi's comments: SS2's antagonists are so strange and frightening because they don't run on human time. Bioshock's antagonists could have been frightening likewise, but the human cast acting in the SS2 mold doesn't quite set them apart (with one notable exception which I will not spoil for you!) and the method being used to weave competing ideologies into the narrative is downright clumsy.

Well, that's enough for now. Little ones need lots of rest.

Eeenteresting. BDOOM hyper-pressurised gore splatter + monsters that break down into smaller creatures upon destruction would be pretty wild. I can imagine a The Thing PWAD already (with plenty of cameo opportunities for Blood's Running Burning Guy, of course!).

Still playing quite a bit of Nuclear Throne. I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit in spite of the fact that I seem to be pretty much stuck at roughly the same place (2-2) each time lately, and in spite of the fact that there are some incredibly cheap deaths that happen. For example, every once in a while they'll throw a metal scorpion and three regular scorpions at you in 1-3 and have them relentlessly bullet spam at you so you can't get anywhere near any of them, and even if you could you're armed with a revolver and a screwdriver or (maybe if you're lucky) a shotgun. At that point you might as well just restart because there's no way you aren't ending up hilariously dead at that point. And yet in spite of that every so often you get a run where everything just clicks, you've got a lasor rifle and 3 or 4 useful level-up abilities and you're trashing everything in sight, and then you're kicking yourself for not accomplishing more with it when you had it.

Not sure if this game makes me want to throw a keyboard across the room or keep playing for six hours straight. At times, both seem like a feasible option.

Speaking of this, Blood is getting downright sadistic around the halfway mark - in i.e. The Sick Ward (phantasms, phantasms everywhere! and fire dogs, which are the worst thing in the game aside from the soul-swallowing hands, which are here in droves too), the secret level (MORE phantasms), and now up two levels later in Monster Bait, which seems like a normal level again, finally. Spare Parts was pretty nasty. A secret where you press upon one discolored bin - you have to stand in molten lava to do this - and understand to turn around for a lava flow dropping on the other side of the room. But of course there's worse in the earlier areas. In Raw Sewage, I absolutely hate the area where you turn two valves to gain admittance to the next area - you have to be quick in and out of this area every time if you want to avoid taking drowning damage (unless you found the hidden diving suit) and I actually had to resort to slapping on cheats just to get the life seed, because I had naively thought that they'd oblige me and leave that secret compartment open while I got my breath. No, if you don't get it when you uncover it, it'll seal up forever (at least none of my attempts to open it again worked)! >>>YOU CHEATED<<< now greets me at every level end. Oh well!

Damn hard game too - I think I'm playing on the second hardest difficulty, and everything is a few steps and a save, sometimes. It's necessary, too, when there's disembodied hands about. Since Spare Parts, though, I'm finally getting a good stash of ammo again. I can't say enough good things about chucking in dynamite, so long as it doesn't catch on some invisibly wide hanging chain or I duck back around the corner before I actually have let it loose. The spray can is great fun too. Best sound effect in the game? Hard to say, but probably it involves fat guys and burning. Or maybe Innocents. "There's no place like home!"

Fun game but some flaws are showing here and there - a bit buggy with the save/load behavior (actors tend to forget what they were doing); the menu being practically unreadable when you die; the fun of taking huge damage because a phantasm caught you when you stumbled into a huge pile of zombie heads. I also do not dig that D&D shit of having the hit location change from shot to shot as dramatically as it does, especially when that affects the pitchfork and SMG button sniping (The Sick Ward has a button you probably should just hit with the shotgun). Let me clear the floor of eyeballs, people!

I recall Blood being noticeably tough when I played it, though my experience was courtesy of a CDR copy that'd crash frequently and never played the intro CG (so I jumped at Caleb's contextless "O NOOO" late in Episode 1). Also I was distracted by Quake II and PC Gamer's promise of Amazing Cinematic Singleplayer. :[ I remember the Overlook Hotel map and others more clearly than metal facility sn#34535234. Although QII admittedly had a decent prison of horrors. "JUS KILL MEH NAO"

My fondest feature of Blood now is the shattering impact behind shotgun blasts and dynamite, and the astonishing lively enemy death sfx/animations. Be cool about fire safety! A "violent game" in the pure, kinetic sense. BDOOM has the oomph and thankfully has given Running Burning Guy a platform to shine in the 21st century, but it still doesn't have smashable windows! But it does have fire safety.

To me Brutal Doom, is overrated, it's cool I get it, I can appreciate what's in there. But the fact that it overshadowed many other good mods that were coming out at the time, infact for next year, pissed me off to no end, IT's not THAT good to be better than everything else. So raving about it for many posts in a row, seems overkill (pun intended).

I've been raving about BDOOM for the last two years Image Weapons-grade comfort gaming!

I do get why its Ikaruga-esque mainstream darling profile would annoy modding scene enthusiasts, with it being underneath the pyrotechnics a simple tweaking of a classic game. OTOH that's always been the crux of its appeal to me and I'd guess a lot of other old DOOMers who appreciate the shot in the arm to monster aggression and overall impact. Same immortal game I'd still be playing in the 2010s anyway, just a bit smarter and a lot louder.

Could anybody rich in an X-Men Legends II PS2 copy on here explain to me which button does what?
The PC version I've got here would be rad... if I had any clue which button the designers meant to do what.
Could be the everest Diablo II clone around if I knew.

Finished these games in the last couple of days:

- Uncharted 2 (PS3)
- Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (DS)
- Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (GBC, replay after over 10 years, with proper ending this time)

Want to start Skyward Sword next, but the supposed missing 4:3 support is putting me off a bit...

Yeah, the game definitely wasn't designed for classic CRTs. The black borders are larger compared to what was seen in the days of bad PAL ports. Even worse is that this seems to be one of the only games on the Wii that doesn't use the deflicker filter... gives me eyestrain quite easily.

Perhaps I should look into a Wii2HDMI now...

Nothing technically outstanding, but X-Men Legends II graphics (at least on PC) look rather badass. Remind me of The Red Star. The kind of looks that won't age badly.

Thank you.
Xan wrote:Even worse is that this seems to be one of the only games on the Wii that doesn't use the deflicker filter...
Xenoblade Chronicles isn't deflickered either (pretty low resolution too, I think). Pandora's Tower is an odd one. Looks like they used some fullscreen post-processing in towers that grates in 480i (absent when you zoom in/enable slo-mo). The way those areas look most of the time is perplexing.
Enter the games that bizarrely don't do prog-scan (Monster Hunter Tri, Kororinpa). Look fine on a CRT to me, but the filter used there may just be of the sort giving some viewers funny feeling.

P.S. Who are the heavily panting ladies in Metropolis Street Racer? At least two tracks, no less. Whenever I hear one in a song, I want to give her a hand, but where is she?

Been playing Gigantic Army a bit recently. I got 1CCs in Easy and Normal (which isn't too hard to do). Just wondering about the TLB in Hard Mode. Is it possible to reach it even if you use continues, or does it have to be a 1CC?
