I don't think it's actually legal for him to charge people for potato salad he makes at home. Potato salad isn't included in Ohio's cottage food law so he would probably have to feed his backers at a place with a commercial kitchen, not that making potato salad for 1,000 people is something you'd want to do in a small home kitchen. Following through with the joke is going to be a fuckload of work for him.

I think this is the kind of thing that people would back "in the heat of the moment". You know, they see this and go "lol a kickstarter for potato salad! Must back!" But then ten minutes later they go "wtf was I thinking?" In any case, this is the most pathetic/brilliant case of free money I've ever heard of to date.

So if I'm reading this correctly he's promised to say each backer's name aloud while making his potato salad.

How long does it take to say 5,000+ names out loud? I hope he tapes it, because I imagine by the end it would be pretty enjoyable to see how miserable he's going to be. It'd almost be worth donating a buck at this point to rag on his vocal chords a little more.

More seriously, it sounds like he's going to be throwing a potato salad party for donors and doing something (charitable?) with the excess money. At least he's not just taking the money and letting the absurdity of the campaign be it's own reward.
