Help setting up properly Sony BVM-1910

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here. Reading a lot about Sony BVMs in this forum, I decided to buy one. It's an old one, model BVM-1910.

I couldn't find the manual for it anywhere. Could you guys please help me setting it up properly? I really don't know what should I do to make a really good use of this beautiful equipment.

Currently, I'm using the composite connection with a BNC adapter for my NES, SNES and N64. I've ordered the following cables from RetroGamingCables: SNES NTSC RGB SCART cable and Sony PVM BNC Converter cable.

The RGB SCART cable outputs composite video and the BNC Converter has a composite sync filter.

Hope you guys help me with this!

He might mean his RGB cable uses composite video as sync, and his scart to bnc has a sync stripper.

Anyway, make sure the monitor is set to rgb and ext sync.

From what I've seen of those old BVMs they have composite in/out on one board and r/g/b in/out on the other. Put your sync cable in the composite in, and rgb in rgb in.

Thanks for your reply. I know how to plug it in, but I don't know how to calibrate its colours or anything. If I open the front tray, I can see 3 or 4 buttons, but I don't know how to make the configuration menu show up, for example.

Can you help me with that?

Its from the late 1980s, its not going to have a menu. You adjust everything with the pots (holes with what look lik screws in them. Go on youtube, faginrs500 has a BVM-2010, in his video he demonstrates some of what you can do. buy some special screwdriver things called pot trimmers, they are plastic and cheap, if you use a metal screwdriver you might damage the plastic the pots are made from.

That's great, thank you very much! But, messing around a couple of days ago I could get to a menu somehow. I even used the 5 buttons inside the tray to navigate around it. Do you have any idea how can I activate the menu again?

No idea, but you could try finding manuals for other models in that range of BVM, 2014/2015/2016 that I know of. and try added 'p' in your searches, e.g. bvm 2010p

So, something kind of weird happened. I still couldn't access the monitor's menu. So, I left it on for about 30 minutes and then pushed the green "ENT" button and it appeared! Today, I turned the TV on and immediately (5 minutes later) tried to get to the menu, but I couldn't. Is it normal?

So, the menu gave me the option to calibrate some settings automatically. The result was:

PHASE: OK
CHROMA: OK
BRT. CAL: OK
CONT. CAL: NG
SETUP: OK

Does it mean that everything was calibrated correctly but the contrast?

If you have the 240p test suite and put up the SMPTE pattern then it should auto calibrate if you press that button. Those BVMs have a probe that plugs in the front to calibrate white balance and uniformity, but even if you found one of those it would be way out of spec by now. Don't mess with the white balance, if yours was previously professionally used it should be calibrated good enough. (RGB gain/bias)

It's good to know that it's better not to buy the BKM-2056 accessory to auto calibrate.

I didn't understand about de 240p test suite. How do I know if I have it?

One other question: in another thread, people were saying that you should terminate the BNC connections of this monitor if you're not using it. Should I plug the 75 ohms connectors in all those BNC inputs or only in the A/B/RGB/Sync that I'm not using? If I'm not wrong, there're 3 Decoder Output connections and also a couple of Vector Ouput connections. Should those also be terminated?

If you have a Sega Megadrive with a flashcart, or a sega mega cd, or a sega dreamcast, or a nintendo wii (softmodded), you can download the 240p test suite here: http://junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php/240p_test_suite

You put the BNC terminators on the outputs that aren't being used, make sure you buy 75 ohm, not 50, they are very cheap, buy as many as there are outputs. PVMs self terminate.

I don't have one... Could I plug my computer via component and display a full screen SMPTE image?

So, I got those BNC terminators and the monitor is great! Before that, it was too bright and I had to manually set the brightness down. Now, it's just fine! Thanks a lot!

About the SMPTE, that was a dumb question. I couldn't plug my Mac via VGA to component as it's video board couldn't handle 15 kHz.

Do you have any suggestions?
