Is it actually supposed to be good, though? Looks promising from the trailer, but doujin shooters rarely deliver.

I think it's pretty good, but it's very far from a traditional shmup. The game is more like a hybrid between a shmup and a melee-heavy mech game like Zone of the Enders. Melee attacks and lock-on have a bigger emphasis than the normal shot. Not a lot of dodging is required since you can cancel half of the bullet patterns with melee (which charges your special gauge) and you have an invulnerable dashing melee attack to pass through patterns. The flashy presentation makes things hard to see sometimes but I haven't had too much trouble with that, I use pretty low settings though.

Normal mode is also really easy to 1cc because you have a huge lifebar that can regenerate. Hard mode is much more of a challenge but you still get life refills between stages. Getting hit does kill your score multiplier though. Revolver360 Re:Actor has a similar problem with 1ccing being really easy but to me that game feels more heavily designed around score attacking.

edit:
Here's a high scoring run on hard (might be WR?): http://t.co/iNnEaDUEZj
Considering the game has already been out for over 5 months I'd imagine the japanese players have figured out routes pretty well.

Note that the game has probably the highest system requirements of any doujin STG to date.

I'm not too worried about scoring in a doujin, but Ether Vapor was a little so-so with how it went overboard with its perspective switches, and hard-to-define enemy bullets.

I'm hoping Astebreed is better in that regard.

There's some rail shooting elements too; you use a cursor to lock-on to background enemies, giving off a Time Crisis vibe.

And yeah, super easy. I 1cc'd it blind. You almost can't die in this game.

If that is the case I'll wait for a sale then. Game looks good otherwise...

Are the harder difficulty settings any better? Game does indeed reek of a demoscene project.

Hard mode is a lot better. Your score will still get destroyed if you get hit a lot on any mode so it's not that bad.

The scoring system is simple but makes the game flow pretty nicely since you have to use all your tools; kill enemies with shots and lock-on to increase multiplier and then cash in on that multiplier using melee or special attacks. Boss scoring is about getting the multiplier up and then speedkilling.

My initial impressions:

-really hard to die (only played a few stages)
-sort of confusing with all the stuff on the screen

It feels like a nice "comfy" game, to sort of play, enjoy the production values, and watch your little mech slice things up. I have a feeling that it's the type of game to be pretty popular on the PC scene with the combo of graphics and anime cheese plot. I'll probably like it better when I get a handle on the mechanics. As it stands I sorta enjoy it. It feels more engaging than Ether Vapor, which was sort of a snooze fest.

I've been playing the game for score a bit since the steam release, it's surprisingly fun and technical. Almost got 40 million on hard with Astebreed yesterday. It doesn't really feel like any other STG but maintaining multiplier and timing melee dashes and EX attacks perfectly is pretty fun. I might write an ST if there's any interest. I also vastly prefer the game over Ether Vapor(which I havent played much though)

Yet another game I thought I'd hate at first but really grew on me.

This looks right up my street actually, not crazy hard but with hidden depth so I can keep coming back to it and playing for my somewhat pathetic personal best :D

It has 2 player coop too right?
