Awesome Game Replays: Game suggestions / casting etc

Post by Aquas »

Hey guys. I'd love to get the ball rolling a bit more on Awesome Game Replays, STG Weekly's side show for Non-STG.
We could use your help! Suggest games / people / footage for an episode.
If you know people who might be interested, send 'em over or show me their nerd abode!

1 credit clears, 1 life clears, speedruns, scoring in non-stg, puzzle, strategy games, whatever. You know how it goes. If it takes some skill then it's awesome. What do you want to see?

Of course, Metal Slug is something in demand. Who are the people on that, surely some people here are good at it and would like to comment on a play?

Here's a list of potential episodes to give you an idea of what kind of things we are lookng at and / or will do at some point:
-NES Contra / Super C 1cc / 1lc (nasty wolv)
-Shadow of Mystara: D&D 1cc liveplay (mike haggar and frenetic)
-Cyberbots / Armored Warriors 1cc
-Sunset Riders (Nonstg) (Mikeuyama)
-Symphony of the Night speedrun (Romscout)
-Mr. Driller G (AGR) (mikehaggar)
-Beatmania IIDX (Bemani people)
STG Weekly!, 1cc's, twitch, XBL: DJ Aquazition
The in-game papers prove that being the paperboy is actually a position of the greatest importance,
ranking alongside top elected officials for notoriety. -Ed Oscuro

I have a suggestion for your Youtube channel: please organize STG Weekly and Awesome Game Replays in playlists, since this would it make easier for others to browse your videos. (Keep up the great work!)

Regarding games, I wouldn't mind watching a 1cc of Magical Drop 3 (Neogeo). The game is a bit broken, though, because execution speed (just basic combos) can seal the deal. I 1cc'd that game years ago, but it felt shallow, due to aforementioned reason. Tetris Attack (SNES) might be more interesting, since you have to pull off combos and can't cheese your way to victory.

Thanks for the suggestion on the playlist, I'll take it. Will try to take care of that soon. Yeah Tetris Attack would be boss.

If you're going to consider IIDX, Pop'n Music is another one. DDR/ITG have their communities, and Stepmania is a thing though I'm not sure how much anymore.

Tetris Attack would be fun, but I'm not sure what kind of high-level play there is in that. Pokemon Puzzle League was a fun take on the formula (I think there were other sequels/spinoffs but I've only played those two).

Demon's Crest would nicely compliment the Makaimura runs. It's more of a console game, but not as much as the other Arremer games.

Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands/Parasol Star are fun to watch, as is Magic Sword. I've never been good at them with one credit but maybe I'm just bad at them.

So, are you looking for preexisting runs/LP'ers to cover or are you just looking for games to check out?

There's this guy named prenatual on youtube who plays all sorts of stealth games and is insanely good at all of them. He usually imposes optional rules like no lethal takedowns/minimal items/etc. to bumb the difficulty up even more.

I would of course have to recommend some racing games to the list, but I'm not sure how well the videos would fit the format, since time attack runs tend to be just a few minutes in length. Well, I guess the same is true with music games and there was that STGW about Caravan games, too.

It would be cool to see gameplay of Gunvalkyrie from someone who actually knows the game well. Every video on youtube right now is garbage. There's a pretty high skill ceiling, and it seems high-level footage is just non-existent.

Tetris Attack is one of the deepest, most interesting puzzle games on the planet, but the problem is, most people don't know about the depth at all, due to an addictive, but shallow, 2p vs mode.

1p Time Attack is where the real meat and potatoes of this game is.

I used to run tetrisattack.net and was basically a world authority on the game. I developed lots of high level strategies and created the site to teach people about the game. This was pre-youtube.

Though I got a small community of people into the game, it never took off to any degree and eventually I stopped maintaining the site.

Anyhow, I'm in the midst of getting my skill back in Mr. Driller G after a couple year hiatus and want to do a good Mr. Driller AGR episode before the year is out. Perhaps after that I can work on getting my TA skills back, although that will take CONSIDERABLY more time, and I'm not sure how many people will even be interested in it.

Yeah, it's mostly just about finding experts or those mostly knowledgeable to commentate.

Good call. I wouldn't mind Racing games at all as being a part on the show. Never mind if I neglect to mention a certain genre.

For the Cyberbots/Armored Warriors 1ccs, you can use my replays on youtube, my mic's sometimes broken and I often have my relatives sleeping, so not sure if i'll be able to talk properly, but I can provide some quality replays.

Well, I'm a speedrunner and I have a certain fondness for grappling hooks. Thus I'm willing to offer up Bionic Commando Rearmed 1&2 and Umihara Kawase.

And to go arcadey, I also run Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.

I feel a bit sheepish mentioning it, as I'm far from the only one even on this forum who's capable, but seeing as mainstream scrubz still won't STFU about Ninja Gaiden (NES) being a totally impossible nutsack-smashing ordeal I can chuck in a no-miss if you guys ever want. Image

Shadow of Mystar live team 1cc would be amazing. Definitely would be cool to see people co-oping on stream.

I am ecstatic to see these offers and suggestions. Thanks all. Will keep the ideas noted and will PM you guys when we consider the episode. With this much, we should be able to actually produce some more frequent episodes soon.

The advantageous thing about Speedruns is that they demonstrate 1cc or no death or similar feats in stride, which makes that playstyle the coolest. But, I'm certainly open to just checking out 1ccs or no-death runs if we can't find a speedrunner or run that tops it. Don't mean to shit on anything here of course, survival strats are sometimes just as fun if people don't want to go "Full speed" *shrug* or something. We're just examining different ways to enjoy the games here, basically.

I can't wait for the metal Slug series to be covered. I also would like to see some beat em ups get covered, I feel that is a genre quite neglected these days.

Another suggestion that would really get views and attention from others outside our community, is maybe have a street fighter episode. I know that there are already many who do that, but it's bound to get attention from the fgc.

I'd love to see Rygar, as it's my favourite arcade game ever. I have no time to record a replay myself (I have a 4 million+ score), but maybe there's someone else out there who can?

Yeah, I'd like to see one too.

Also worth noting, but if you count 3d character action games like Bayonetta or MGR as beat em ups (or at least spiritual successors to them), than arguably they are one of the few arcade descended genres that have remained popular.

Actually some high level/scoring/speedrunning Bayonetta play would be great. Only thing might be that it might be a bit too long for a single episode.

How about Elemental Gearbolt? There's a couple of decent videos online (nico has a really high scoring play of the Japanese version), it's got a lot of scoring depth for a light gun game, and playing for score is very difficult in the survival department. I could commentate on that one if it ever happened, though I'm not good enough to provide a full scoring replay myself.

For a night of ultimate adventure, you could watch a play of RASTAN. Don't know anyone who can clear it though.

I found a Bubble Bobble 1cc played by Ben Shinobi, a while back (Doesn't he have the western record score for RSG or something?). Might be hard to find someone to commentate on it, but it's a tremendously fun game that I have never been any good at. lol. As CStarFlare mentioned, it'd probably be a fun one to watch (all those interesting level designs and stuff)

I should really get off my butt and finish my Advance Wars 2 campaign some time. I'm literally one mission away from a world record campaign, but I'm being anal retentive because I know I can theoretically shave off one more turn, and I can't figure out how to actually do it.

In any case, I play most turn-based strategy games at a very high level. Yggdra Union without taking any damage, Fire Emblem Hard modes, Heroes of Might and Magic Impossible maps on Impossible difficulty, XCOM Ironman Impossible, you name it, I can probably do it if I haven't done it already.

Impressive stuff there, especially the XCOM one. I love how this forum seems to gather all sorts of skilled players.

True, this forum has some very unique and versatile members. Blackbird I envy your tactical prowess. I've always wanted to pwn at strategy games, hearing about your skills makes me want to get back into genre. I managed to snatch up x-com during the steam sale, so I might start with that. I remember back in the gba days, I found fire emblem and advance wars to be quite the challenge.

I would like to see a vid of the JP Mario Open Golf, especially on the higher level courses. Searching for "Mario Open" on youtube mostly brings up the US NES Open and it's very hard to find videos of the Japanese version. The JP version has some major differences (less modes, but more courses, with some holes having more obstacles).

I used to be able to 1LC Nam-1975 on the Neo-Geo. It'd take a bit of practice to get back into being as good as I was back in the day, but it'd kind of be like riding a bike.

I suggested this to the F-Man: Puzzle Bobble series. Probably one of the most easiest games to pick up and difficult to master. Requires excellent decision making and precise orb placements to fully exploit the wonders of this game. At the moment, Rex Wong seems to be pretty competent on the game and worth doing commentary over his replays.
