SHMUP Master Episode 2: Thunder Force 3

Post by Aggro Sky »

Well, it's been 2 months but I finally completed SHMUP Master Episode 2! This time around, not only did I complete Thunder Force 3 without dying, on Mania difficulty, but I taught myself how to edit video and I produced a 13 minute segment before the run. I covered the following topics in the video:

1) The History of the Thunder Force series
2) Comparisons between the 4 different versions of Thunder Force 3
3) Fun with the amusing voice samples
4) Huge Death Montage!
5) And of course, my No Death Run

If you didn't see my first video, I explain what my goals are with SHUMP Master in the link below from my website Gaming Rebellion. There you will also find the link to the video itself as well as time stamps to every portion of my video (it's 44 minutes long!).

Feedback as always is greatly appreciated! I am curious as to what people think about what I have done with this video... Hope everyone enjoys!

Yes, in the video I talk about the port to the Playstation/Saturn. It's identical to the original except for CD quality music.

I mean I knew about the Saturn port, but I have never read or heard anything about a Playstation one.

Well after digging further you may be right! I think I made the mistake of seeing the Thunder Force V Playstation box and thinking it was the Gold Pack! UGH! I better make a note of it below the vid! Thanks for pointing that out! :/

Very enjoyable video, Aggro Sky  TF III is a fun one to watch. It's got basically the best vgm OST ever, and some nice varied environments as well as some intense moments. Also nice commentary, and the intro stuff (death montage, history, etc) was fun, too.

Apart from the Saturn / Playstation thing that Xyga brought up, I'd also like to point out that Volume 2 of the TF gold pack (on Saturn) has an arcade-perfect port of Thunder Force AC, which you didn't mention. Also, the AC is just a standard abbreviation for "Arcade," I'm pretty sure. I also recommend that you check out some of the Arcade versions of tracks from TF III. The arcade platform has the same sound chip as the Sega Genesis, but they changed some of the synths and stuff. I think it's even better than the Genesis version, actually. Not that they're that different though, really. I definately agree that the Genesis version of the OST is way better than the Saturn and Spirits version.

Finally, I don't know how into online leaderboards you are, but your score is definately good enough to post on our Thunder Force 3 board in the high score forum, if you're interested.

Anyway, thanks for the video :)

Thanks so much for the tips and for watching! I thought about comparing the Arcade version also but I figured Thunder Spirits would be good enough. And yeah, this was my first REAL produced video so I am still learning lol. I know next time to make DAMN sure to research better!

And I would love to post my high score! Perhaps I will do that.. :)

Nice work Aggro Sky - one of my favorite shooters as well. I managed to 1cc it on Maniac back when it was first released - on a tiny 13 inch CRT. Watching your video brought back some good memories!

As for the "giant green ship" in every shooter - you can thank Rtype for that.

Haven't watched the video yet (currently watching it now) but I just wanna say I can't wait for the playthrough of Forgotten Worlds. I have that game on one of the PSP Capcom arcade game compilations (forgot the exact name) and I don't think I've even gotten past stage 1 without dying.

Thanks Soupbones! I have similar feelings about the game (which I expressed in the commentary). Thunder Force 3 is one of those games that has kept me coming back all this time. So glad it made you happy to watch it! :)

Yeah, I think a lot of the scores you post in this series will be relevant, simply by virtue that 1 life clear games grant a huge end bonus if the game has one.

If I had to hazard a guess, the "AC" in Thunder Force AC probably just stands for "Arcade".

I quite enjoyed episode 2, I recently acquired Thunder Spirits, and it was cool that you explained the differences.

Thanks! Yeah I was a bit hard on Spirits but in all honesty I just don't feel it's anywhere near as good as Thunder Force 3. You could clearly see in that video comparison the major slow down issues. That alone killed the experience for me when I played it recently...

I'm really enjoying this show. I love where it's going, and the quality is just perfect. There should be a dedicated thread to your show, with all episodes indexed. Looking forward to more episodes.

I really like this series so far. My favorite part is that this isn't some generic Let's Play where the guy has his mic on for no reason and is just talking to hear himself talk. You are informative and are saying things for a good reason.

Thanks so much! I think I need to get a couple more episodes under my belt before I get my own thread though lol... One of my goals with this show (at least starting with episode 2) was to make a really qualiy video with good production values that isn't just a generic review/let's play. Everyone does that! So I wanted to create something better... So glad people are responding with positivity!

Thanks! The reason this isn't a generic let's play is simple, I practice the hell out of these games to achieve that 1CC run. So I know the game inside and out. It's easy to talk meaningfully about a game when you've played it more than once. Most of these Let's Play guys are either playing the game for the first time or just aren't familiar enough with the game to really say anything meaningful about it. I'm really glad you noticed this because that is one of my major goals with this series :)
