Yeah, it's just redundant and retarded with the mentality of the online posters expecting to see Christ rise and performing a cute little jig every time you power it up. Their rationale and comprehension when it comes to the stability and reliability of a video game console is alarming, but is to be expected with denziens of online messageboard. Compare the fact that there are millions and millions of of people out there that have at least bought it once in their lifetime, and you hardly hear about how people's console system have been working just fine since they bought it at launch or couple of releases later rather than the recent re-releases. Methinks it's probably because they're too busy playing on it instead of complaining in message board forums like here. ;)

The ratio of defective products to the working products is really, really enormous.

Let's take these data below for example, quoted by Google Answers:
=====================
Video Games Platforms
=====================

I didn’t find a top "20" chart for video game platforms; however I
found a number of smaller charts for platform sales data.

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of September 2005)

PS2 96.01 million
Xbox 22.5 to 23 million
GameCube 19.31 million
Game Boy Advance 70.04 million
Nintendo DS 8.83 million
PSP 8.81 million
N-Gage 2 million
PSone 102.49 million
Video game consoles don't always fail by themselves, it is the owners' fault, too.

Its a balance thing. Neo-geo.com is now full of rabid idiot Sony fanboys. Though as far as the "really real world" goes (i.e. people I see and interact with on a day to day basis), it seems like more people are becoming anti-Sony who weren't so awhile back.

Which I welcome with open arms. Because when everyone starts hating Sony, I just want people to remember: I'M ORIGINAL!!!! MUTHAFUCKA!!!! 8)

To be honest, I've had few problems with any of the consumer electronics that I own, no matter who makes them. My brother's first Xbox (early model with the Thompson drice) had the drive go out on it, but he replaced it with a new one a couple of years back, and that one hasn't had any problems. Both my Dell PocketPCs have operated flawlessly for as long as I've owned them (some of the early ones had some reliability problems as well) and my 360 hasn't crashed on me once yet (That's not to say it's perfect, the thing seems like it could be quieter than it is.) Even at work, I know people who have had to send their 360s in for service though. The most problematic catrgory of electronics I've dealt with would probably be computer power supplies, which have caused a number of problems with some of my previous systems. My current computer has been rock solid since I put it together nearly a year ago though.

Sony has been making quality consumer electronic products for decades.
But they haven't for a very long time, and their sales reflect this. I'm sorry this is so hard for you to swallow Dave, but it's not a huge secret. Hasn't been for a while. Their quality had already slipped big time when I was working in electronics stores in the late 90's. Do I have Sony stuff that's good? Sure. I've got way more that was not made well though. A couple of things were gifts, some stuff was my own fault for buying. If you got some Sony product that makes you want to touch yourself, more power to you -- not everyone does. Their Wega's from what I've seen are very good, while their other stuff (MP3' players, MD players, Hi-8 decks, etc) are garbage.

If anyone gives a shit, the best electronic product I ever had was an SVHS deck made by Mitsubishi. I dubbed tape after tape with it through college. I had it a total of 5 years, and rarely gave it a break. When I wasn't watching, I was dubbing anime tapes for people. It required like a $50 repair after all those hundreds of hours of play.

It's not hard for me to swallow, I just don't see it happening. UD advised me that Sony makes about the best LCD monitors, when I asked him about getting an LCD monitor to use for my consoles, and I am typing this on a Sony Vaio which has been incredibly reilable-the only problems we've had with it have been the result of viruses, and that's not Sony's fault.

Every single PS2 and PSTwo I've ever played, except one that my brother got back in Christmas of '02, has been 100% rock solid. My last XBOX, on the other hand, loaded Serious Sam at a slower rate then a Sega CD unit. Either the Thompson drive XBOX's are still in stores, or there are problems with the Samsung drives as well.

Hmmm,

I've still got a SCPH-1000 from the Japanese PS1 launch in 1994, that started life disc swapping (US games on JP machine) and such. 11+ years later it still works fine. Sure the laser skips a beat from time to time. I must have put 1000+ hours into that machine at least.

I've never had a PS2 go wrong except the memory card fiasco of the Japanese PS2 launch.

Circuit city delivered 3 Wega 55" LCD TV's to my home 6 months ago due to the first 2 not working out of the box. And my prior TV which was a XBR (top of the line Sony) spent most of its life having geometry issues.

So, I agree that TV's that Sony makes are not the best for reliability. Sony consoles are probably prone to going wrong, but I've not had the problems myself.

^ Now you reminded me of the SCPH1001 I have, its still running with only slight laser lens wear after almost 10 years of playing time.

I'm probably one of the luckiest Sony customer in the world. My PS1/2, Grand Wega, MP3 player and a pair of speakers are very soild.

I don't think its fair to say Sony has the least reliable consoles because they have sold 5 times as many consoles as the the competition. This means their production lines are working around the clock.

Its the same with launches. XB360 launch machines are prone to faults because they were rushed out in numbers. Dreamcast had disc pressing problems on US launch, Japanese PS2 had some kind of memory card software fault. It goes on and on.

Looking back at my Sony TV's, I don't think I had much bad luck. On my UK Triniton the RGB was bland looking.. You could of got a better RGB display for a fraction of the cost. But Svideo excelled on the Trinitron so I used that instead.

Also one has to bear in mind that technology that goes into TV's these days is much more advanced than before. Think about how complex a CRT is these days!

I don't think it's fair to say they are the least reliable electronics manufacturer. I do think it's more than fair to say that their prices are way to high, and do not reflect their craftsmenship.

I had a Sony WEGA flatscreen tv that totally crapped out in less than a year. For the money I paid for it, I didn't think I deserved such shoddy craftsmanship. Dave I'm sure all your Sony stuff works just fine but think about how much money you paid for a completely average product? Even if it's not shoddily made, you don't have to pay that much for a quality product.

Ok, now I see where you are coming from, Gaijin-although you could say that about a lot of consumer electronics, these days.

@noob-there is nothing shoddy about the PSTwo-it is the most durable model of PS2. I owned several because I let my impulsivity take over, but it's a very durable system.

Again, plenty of people have had to buy multiple XBOX's; a fact which rarely receives any notice on this site. If the Thompson drive's went out 2 years ago, how comes it that the last XBOX I got had a lousy drive? When I bought the XBOX, a customer in the store told me that if my serial number-which I could see-was such-and-such, I'd be fine. But I wasn't, obviously. I'm sure you can tell by the tray, but no game store's gonna let you take a new XBOX out of the box, power it up, and look at the tray, in their store.

This really stinks, because right now, I'd rather get a new XBOX, and then get a 360 when they drop in price.

At any rate, methinks that whatever Treasure brings to the table for the J-360 will cause a jump in sales-if Treasure's new game will be even half as good as their other shooters, shmups or borderliners-then it will really be a big help to the system.

Dave, how do you know a particular system is durable if you keep selling it and buying a new one? It sounds like you barely break in the buttons on your dual shock before shipping the ps2 off to who knows where.

The slimline I have now has never overheated, and I've played it for 6 hours straight at a time-but I keep it well ventilated. The XBOX started having drive issues almost right out of the box-again, either Thompson drive XBOX's are still in stores, or the Samsung one's aren't that great either.

I think the 360 is great, but, like I said, I'd rather get an XBOX first, if I could only be assured of the drive durability.

6 hours is nothing. My Dreamcast survived 43 hours straight of PSO as well as a 16 hour session of Twinkle Star Sprites.

I dunno, my first DC stopped reading discs after a relatively short while, and I play all my systems pretty lightly, I rarely have a single gaming session which reaches 2 hours...every system ever made has at least something to worry about.

So what about the XBOX's-how in the world can I know (assuming I get new one) if it's a Samsung, and do even they have problems?

Nice sig, BulletMagnet, but I hope you know I was being sarcastic!

@JP-Holy cow, I don't even think I could play for that long! Well, maybe if it was something Compile! :P

For PSO... yes... I did. And I fathom when Panzer Dragoon Saga first came out I probably... well... played that one for about 16-17 hours straight all the way through (though now I can do speed runs around 9-10 hours).

For TSS... no. I had to go to work for 10 hours, so I was only in on 6 hours of that. But my roomate kept playing it all while I was at work.

When they start making sturdy, quality products again of course. If Blu-ray turns out to be the awesomeness that Sony makes it out to be and not a highly defective format, I'm sure it can get some cred back.

Well the dedicated Sony Blu-ray players are going to be around $1200.. so the one in the PS3 is probably crap.
