I have mine horizontal with the the vent facing up on my desk. Despite placing an object over the vent when the system is not in use I can see dust accumulating on the fan and the areas surrounding.
I have learned that cleaning my PC fans, dust covers, cpu and gpu heatsinks on a semi-regular basis is beneficial, once things get too clogged it is much more difficult and will potentially cause damage from overheating.
I want my Japanese XBOX to last forever, I can be hopeful at least, and I'm fairly sure it will need to be cleaned at some point to maintain its effective potential lifespan. Older consoles without moving parts are quite simple to open and tinker around with but modern consoles are more complicated.
Anyone know what its like inside these 360 s consoles, are they easy to clean and reassemble without buggering it up? Do you feel that cleaning the console is necessary?
Has anyone tried cleaning the interior of a XBOX 360 slim?

These show how to take it apart:

Probably not really necessary to clean it yet unless your place is extremely dusty, but look at the guides above and see if something you are comfortable doing.

I took mine apart without messing it up. I wouldn't want to do so until I really needed to though, it's a huge hassle to get apart then back together.

It's a good point - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Of course that's not completely true with these machines - preventative maintenance is a good idea if you can do it safely. However, mishandling can subject the components to static discharge damage, so be very cautious if you must handle parts.
This model looks like it presents lots of opportunities to break or scratch plastic.
I'd first try a vacuum to see if any dust can be sucked out from around the fan, but be careful.

Even being careful, I am not sure that using a vacuum is a good idea due to static electricity build-up. They do make vacuums that are meant to be used on PCs, however, so perhaps that would help save you some time and frustration at the cost of a bit of money.Ed Oscuro wrote:I'd first try a vacuum to see if any dust can be sucked out from around the fan, but be careful.
