Any one else notice Shenmue's QTE's being ripped off?

Prince of Peria The Two Thrones, Biohazard 4, Soul Calibur III, uh, that's all I can think of for now. But I'm sure there's more. Does Sega/AM2 get any credit? HELL NO! That is, unless Sega/AM2 stole it from someone else...

God of War uses QTE's too.

Sega didn't invent the idea, it was used in 1984 by Dragons Lair arcade machines.

It was probably the first time it was used in coordination with realtime graphics though ;)

Personally I am not a fan, it works better in some games than others. Take Biohazard 4 for example. I will die in that game more often from QTE's than anything else. Borrowing from Shenmue or Hypersports can seriously dilute an otherwise perfect game.

Surprising no one's mentioned Die Hard Arcade yet.

Sega took an age-old gaming convention, stuck a catchy name on it and claimed it as their own. This gameplay mechanic was around for a loooong time before Shenmue.

Die hard arcade definately used the QTE system with realtime graphics.

It was not popular though.

In my opinion its just an easy way for devcos to add fancy animations in realtime without interrupting gameplay.

QTE's are when you are prompted mid game to push a button or a sequence of buttons to continue progress. If you make the sequence in time you live, if you don't or push the wrong button you usually die.

Most 3D adventures use them on Bosses but its becoming more common to see them used throughout the whole game now.

Isn't Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) on the Xbox full of QTEs?

Yep, Die Hard Arcade was full of QTEs and it rocked, Dynamite Cop 2 had them too but it was shit.

Did QTE's besides laserdisc adventures ever happen in any 2D games? I'm guessing since there weren't any real-time cinematic sequences back then, these type of things weren't done. I can't think of any, that's for sure.

If you look at the parappa games they are basically QTE based. Because your button presses dictate the route and progress of the game.
