Any Green Beret/Rush n Attack players?

Are there any Green Beret/Rush n Attack players here? It's my #2 game behind Ghosts n Goblins.
I know of no-one who can second loop this thing. Are there any videos I've missed? It doesn't seem to be popular among Youtubers.

Not so much these days but as I mentioned in my pm,I used to play green beret every day on my speccy.It was my top game back in the 80's,it still holds a special place in my heart.I only have it on ds and gba these days,I have cleared the first loop on gba,not sure how far I got after that...when replaying it though,it felt quite short in comparison to when I used to play on speccy (used to play with keys as well)

Due to its different title, M.I.A. doesn't get enough recognition as the sequel to Green Beret. It's probably the better of the two games, if only for the inclusion of 2P co-op.

I've played the demo of the gritty Western-developed reboot of the series, Ex-Patriot. It seems to have been trying to give its source material a similar treatment as Bionic Commando Re-Armed did, but fumbles every step of the way. At least they had the enemies speak actual Russian.

I never got on with MIA at all. I just hated everything about it, its presentation and animations in particular. I loved that Konami period 85-87 when they released Green Beret, Jail Break, Gradius and Iron Horse. Ex-Patriot looked like dogshit so I gave that a wide-berth.

Is the second loop of Green Beret that much harder? I love that game but never bothered to play past the first loop.

And Ex-Patriot is alright, although it doesn't play at all like Green Beret. Think of it as a standalone stealth game and it becomes rather fun (especially when you play for score).

I can never seem to get a handle on the kickers on the second loop. I doubt that they're random, but having to clear the first loop just to practice on the second has always been a pain. I'd love to see a video from the guy who has the high score and the second loop achievement on XBLA.

Love it, not played it properly for years. Used to be able to clear the first loop on MAME, may fire it up on Xbox later. Speccy and C64 versions were excellent as well.

I always loved the clever title of this game..."Russian Attack"...really great play on words, particularly when you think about the time period in which it was originally released to arcades.

I've finished the 1st loop of this game on mame years ago, but never bothered playing the 2nd loop either.
I find it to be a very enjoyable game.

Shame about the MSX port being so awful :)

I was horribly disappointed by that, at the time. I was glad to see an article with an ex-Konami GB staffer a few years ago, where he admitted that the port was a clusterfuck and took it on the chin and apologised.

Man, sorry for bumping this old thread but I've really been digging Rush N Attack lately and wanted to see if anyone else is still all about this game.

I'm trying to beat 2 loops of it and score at least 550,00 - I got close last night, getting to stage 7 (stage 3 of the second loop) and scored 421k.

One of the most played arcade-to-Speccy ports, alongside Renegade, wasn't it?
I got Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced practically for this game, but the port's seemingly faithful graphics*) are not of the most discernible kind on a small screen. Still the preferred version thanks to its button for jump (co-op with even single cart as well). The lack of continues or passwords is HARSH.

*) I blame them for me not having spent quite as much time with it as I could since in typical handheld gaming situations - GBA Panel de Pon is that much easier on the eye. So I haven't even gotten past level 2 (and the other games on Arcade Advanced turned out worthy of my time too - auto-fire Time Pilot ftw).

I never got far in this one; it always made me want to throw it out the window :D It's a good game for sure, just very challenging. I think I played it the most on the GBA. BTW the C64 port is really good too.

Completed the first loop on NES years ago, nowadays I play it occasionally on XBLA. Still a great game, but very much of its time.

Tried it, and got to stage 8. The kickers on the 2nd loop aren't random. It alternates between 3 regular soldiers, then 3 kickers. Later this becomes 2 groups of each (R, R, K, K).

IMO, the NES version is harder than the arcade. That first extra life you'd originally get at 50K is gone. Stage 2's boss is almost similar to the copters from the arcade's stage 3, only it's soldiers on jetpack who are much faster. The kickers can be dealt with similarly to the arcade, at least- either backstep and stab, come flying at them while whaling the stab button (they should jump kick right into your knife), or even run toward one without stopping (causing him to whiff over your head).

Both versions seem to call for different tactics. In NES stage 4 (arcade st3) the helicopters come in high, so you can't hurry back to the left, sit there with your bazooka, and pick them off early. They'll stand a chance against you here, as they can now drop several grenades before coming down to the bottom. NES seems stingier with weapon pickups, and the bazooka will have 3 rounds, not 4.

For a really hard game of RnA/GB, try the C64. While it's a good conversion, someone thought it'd be cool to replace several of the regular soldiers with gunmen, and shorten or even eliminate the delay before they fire. So, it starts out even harder than arcade loop 2.

No continues, no passwords, no stage select.

Ah I remember playing the NES version with my friend since kid, I couldn't reach stage 3 at that time.

It was OK. There were some things I liked about it - the levels having optional underground areas to explore, and more weapons, but it felt like a totally different game. Boss music was good.

The NES main theme is so good, I forgot that the arcade music is more simplistic. FDS version seems to have an odd difference. Powerups only give one ammo, but the ammo is stackable (for lack of better word).

I did try Ex-Patriot when it first came out but couldn't stick with it. Maybe the stealth action didn't click with me then, but I'm kind of on the fence now about whether or not to give it another try. Just don't go into it expecting Rush'n Attack 3.

I finished Ex-Patriot when it came out and thought it was alright. Be warned that it's a short game - only 3 levels, each one about an hour long. It gets better when you play for score and try to get S ranks: you need to speedrun the levels and try to stealth-kill as many guards as possible.

Give the demo another try and see if you like it.

I blame the up-for-jump*) for of this title's relative obscurity nowadays and I believe everybody who wants to explore any version properly - should do so with a keyboard, particularly since consumer-grade gaming keyboards are of better quality than they used to be in relatively near past.

I also found the Japanese coin-op Green Beret, at least on default MAME settings - for the lack of a better word - manic like no other version I'd played. Much as I admire NES Rush'n Attack with its clever sprite limit work-arounds**), the arcade one is the real deal.

By the way, last time I checked, English Wikipedia was wrong about gameplay on the NES being "essentially identical to" arcade. Most glaringly, on the NES - it is possible to change the direction you're facing when mid-air, which makes for some previously impossible knifings, but also made me feel screwed over by the gamepad controls way more than once. Now if only I could play it with my mechanical keyboard on my Wii... Or can I?

*) Even the Arcade Advanced version remains troubled by the fact that jump move, now sepearate from "up", keeps latching onto ladders - it is also not as "manic" as the arcade due to the A.I. dudes and bullets moving slower on GBA (I also can't seem to reach any of the 1st stage's "platforms" by jumping on GBA, whereas at least with the brigde ones, it is possible on MAME, if still trickier to perform than on the NES).

**) Long story short - more varied A.I. behaviour, to make up for the lesser possible kill count.

Last but not least - pixel artists oughtta check out NES Rush'n Attack for it's graphically lovely; perhaps the most serious attempt to make it look "realistic" I've seen in 8-bit action games (outside of "graphic adventures", demos and such). Even the problems with animating characters of "grown up" proportions, haunting Konami themselves well into 16-bit period, are somewhat eased out here by the expressive death animations capturing the spotlight (less so in the coin-op Green Beret, with its greater number of animation frames per second in general).

M.I.A. is definitely better. You can store several weapons at once, and switch between them similar to Time Crisis 5. It's neat how you have to extract the prisoners, rather than being granted success. The more you bring back alive, the bigger of a bonus you get. Konami missed out by not porting M.I.A. to a 16-bit system.
