Asougi - ESPRaDe Clone

Post by daliscar »

Well it certainly looks like EspRaDe!

and I totally don't understand what all the gauges and percentages mean or what the weapons do.
There's an HTML manual in Japanese which I don't understand either but it looks really complicated

Download's here: http://www.vector.co.jp/soft/win95/game ... 60.html?ds

Giant hitbox, fast bullets, no slowdown, this game makes me want to cry for mommy  Wonder if ESPRAde is so ruthless aswell.

I'll see if I can get something from the manual when I'm back home.

The hitbox is pretty small in EspRade, but it's tricky to get used to it's position, especially since the player sprite "banks" a lot when you move side to side.

Just had a go at this. No, it doesn't play like ESPRade from what I'm seeing. X deploys this laser thing that sits there for a few seconds irrespective of player movement, and C seems to deploy some weird thing that puts hexagons over the enemies and takes 50% away from that meter on the bottom right.

Bit too early for me to get a solid conclusion but right now I'm getting more of a Hellsinker feel than ESPRade.

Are there any more screen shots or a video available?
I hate downloading all those doujin, without ever seeing them before.

Wow this is a blast from the past! Must have been about 5 years ago, but I can't recall the game being any good...

Skimmed through the manual and did a translation of the key points in the mechanics section, here it is, if anyone is interested:

The shield:
- It cancels bullets and negates damage from ramming into enemies
- It lasts a fixed amount of time no matter what
- Finishing a stage without using continues gives you 1 extra shield, no-missing(not using shields?!) stages will give you 2.

The percentage bar:
- You always start a stage with 300%
- Up until the stage boss appears the bar automatically charges itself
-- This only happens when you aren't shooting.
- If the bar becomes negative it will automatically refill up to 0%, but until then you can't use skills and your movement speed is lowered.
-- The bar refills at a higher rate when you aren't shooting.
*All skill costs are flat numbers from the % number(i.e. if you have 300% and cast trance you'll have 200%, not 0%)

The three little dots above the percentage bar:
- Each represents a different skill. From left to right, shock, psychokinesis, trance.
- When the respective skill is active, the dot will blink
- You can't activate the same skill while it is still active(i.e. its dot is blinking)

Normal shot:
- Your normal shot destroys enemies normal shots. I've only seem bosses use what the game considers to be a normal shot, though.

Shockwave(the long blue/yellow laser):
- Costs 10% of your percentage bar
- Damages normal enemies, slows bosses.
-- Likewise, the bosses' shockwaves will only slow you.
- As with normal shot, your shockwaves anhihilates the bosses' shockwaves.

Psychokinesis:
- Costs 50% of your percentage bar
- Targets all enemies in the screen
- Damages normal enemies, stuns enemies for a brief moment.
-- Bosses' psychokinses work likewise on you
- Then again, possible to counter their psychokinesis by casting your psychokinesis.
- (I don't know if I got this one right) You can't stack stuns on bosses.

Trance:
- Costs 100% of your percentage bar
- Unleashes your awesome inner powers 8)
- Percentage bar refills faster when in trance

The little energy items:
- Refill your percentage bar
- Are attracted to you when you're in trance or not shooting.

Scoring(not quite sure I've got the numbers right):
- When your percentage bar is refilling, you gain 120 points for 1%
-- When in trance you'll get 480 points for 1%
- Absorbing energy items will give you 610 points
- Upon completing the stage you are awarded 240 points for each unit of your percentage bar and 300000 points if you no-miss.

Now go play and don't die as fast as I do

The laser won't actually move, but careful position may indeed reap good rewards while avoiding use of the shield hexagon thing until you absolutely have to (ie. panic bombs).

Thought I might bump this.

One of the last options in the Main Menu will take you to two replays included with the game - one high scoring run and clear by the male character and a run up to stage 5 with the female character. Watching the first replay gets you a REALLY GOOD IDEA of how this game works.

If anyone's up for a watch I could've sworn there's a moment in Stage 3 where the player summons his hexagon powers and when the enemies with hexagons above them fly into eachother they explode as if in collision. Maybe it was the overall damage thing just taking effect but I swear it was collision-related. I'd upload a video but I'm not sure I can run this and do a VirtualDub screen capture at the same time.

EDIT: Here's the first run I mentioned. Turns out it was just a coincidence regarding the collision thing, though that may be a helpful point in killing a whole bunch of stuff at the same time. It's the end of stage bonus and bosses that really matter though. It also looks like running into enemies is not an issue as this guy goes over several large flying enemies without collision kills.

I just downloaded the game and tried it out. I have not managed to beat the stage 1 boss yet, it is quite difficult. I guess you can make some good progress by using the characters' various skills but playing a 4-button shoot'em up on the keyboard is not the most comfortable set-up there is.

The boss music is great, by the way! A few other tracks are also enjoyable.
