Anyone here play Dwarf Fortress? I just started playing the other day with the starter pack, and after skimming some wiki articles and a few videos I've really been sucked into it.
So far:
>I built a really messy fortress with spiraling piles of bones everywhere. There are literally bones everywhere.
>I have some workshops set up, building them as I go.
>I made a really nice dining hall
>I made a mine, and I've been smelting plenty of silver and lead.
>I have a kitten and puppy slaughterhouse; as soon as they're born they get put into a cage and are slaughtered for food and bones.
>A four year old child really wanted to build... something. He sat there at a craftdwarf's workshop for months on end without food or water. eventually went insane, stripped all his clothes off and ran around the fortress until he died from thirst in the dining hall. I forgot about him until he began decomposing and flooded the dining hall with miasma
>Some goblins just showed up en masse for the first time apparently to try and kill everybody; literally 3 seconds after they showed up somebody randomly threw a party that most of the hunters attended. The goblins barged in and slaughtered most of the party guests and some pets before being killed.
>While I began building coffins, 2 dwarfs began throwing tantrums and punching other dwarfs. Those dwarfs got pissed and threw tantrums also, attacking other dwarfs. This went on for awhile. The dining hall is now soaked in blood
>I now need to figure out how to create a military so this doesn't happen again

I always end up coming back to it and wasting a few days of my life on a new fort. Didn't really enjoy the post 40d updates, Megabeasts are cool and all, but caves interfere with my OCD(if you don't have it you'll get it) severely and I never really liked the whole necromancer and vampire thing.
Training a competent military was quite easier back in the day too, those overpowered marksdwarves. tbh I still don't know how to get a decent one on post-2010 versions, shooting ranges are quite fucked up, drillers never really drill dwarves, danger rooms and whatnot.

All the dwarfs are currently killing each other. I can't build anymore coffins because the wood choppers have gone insane, and the carpenter has destroyed his workshop. The carpenter is busy killing random dwarfs. There is no more booze for the dwarfs because the carpenter killed the brewer in a blood thirsty fury. 20 dwarfs died in the last 5 minutes.

The dining hall is now soaked in vomit, and rotting corpses litter the hallways because the dwarfs in charge of hauling them to the corpse pile are busy killing other dwarfs. Somebody randomly decided to throw a party. It didn't go well. The slaughter continues.

All of the beds in the dorm are soaked in blood, and random corpses are lying on them. The entire fortress is coated in miasma leaking from rotting corpses. All of the miners and woodcutters are dead. The only remaining carpenter is running around outside naked and babbling.

There are now ghosts haunting the remaining survivors, who are still trying to kill each other.

After 70 dwarfs died everybody finally calmed down. However at that point the fortress was pretty much fucked so I had a cook dig into some rivers and flood the fortress before abandoning. That was certainly something.
