Crap from minute 0.
I didn't bothered to check the video but let's face it: King Of Fighters: Sky Stage is so average. If it wasn't for the KOF license nobody would gave a shit about it.

Love these pro-reviewers.
In which way is Sine Mora revolutionary?

It had graphics, and an actual attempt at a somewhat deep plot, but as for actual gameplay, there isn't anything revolutionary.

Many other shmups also had graphics of the same quality and older ones on top of that like Ikaruga HD. As about the deeeeeeeep plot Senko no Ronde also had one during gameplay and it's much more interesting to the point that I have finished it with all characters (something I rarely do with a game).

Oh really? Well I guess it isn't, then. I guess this goes to show that all you need to make a game (or anything else I guess) popular is good graphics and marketing.

I've been playing a bit of Gigantic Army recently, and wondered if there were any mainstream reviews for it, since it came out on Steam not too long ago. There's an 8/10 review on Destructoid, and there's also this 5/10 review:

http://www.hookedgamers.com/pc/gigantic ... -1196.html
Gigantic Army leans heavily on its arcade influences. So much so that it almost has a Roguelike-like quality, in that once you run out of lives, you’ll have to start the whole game over.
So, going by that description, almost all arcade games must be Roguelike(like). Who knew?

9 out of 10 chance that Gigantic Army reviewer started gaming this millennium, knows nothing of Japanese games and has always played exclusively on PCs.

I'm so grateful this guy gave us a play-by-play of everything he did, it's riveting.

Moved the mouse around for a few minutes. The cursor didn't move. Tried the arrow keys. The cursor moved in the direction of the arrow I pressed. The volume was loud, so I turned it down, resulting in the volume not being as loud. Switched to fullscreen mode and confirmed that fullscreen was bigger than windowed, as in every other program ever made.

"I CAN'T USE THE MOUSE ON THE MENUS!?!?"

I know! It's like the developers cared enough to code a proper menu! How blasphemous.

To be fair, not being able to use the mouse on a menu with a cursor on it is annoying. That shouldn't be enough to take away from the rest of the game, though.

The problem is, games are just… better now. So to make a throwback game, you need to make a concerted effort to bring it into the 21st century. For the most part, games that were made decades ago should probably remain there, unless something drastic is done to update them.
This is the worst thing I've seen written about video games since Game Informer's "These kinds of games need to die" review of Metal Slug X.

I can say with great confidence that me and this Matt Porter could not hang.

Wow. So to this chap games' quality as interactive experiences is defined by by their technical prowess.

I'd love to see his take on board games. Chess and Go? Loaded of dated old shit compared to AR digital/physical crossover board games.

Yeah, but it indicates that this guy was likely weened PC. And the bit about how "strange" the Z, X, and arrow buttons were tells me that he's not familiar with this genre at all.

May I ask, whats wrong with using arrow keys? They have arrows printed on them. That's as intuitive as controls could possibly be.

Gigantic Army wasn't the best game ever, but it beats that shit. Geez.

Some of those games are decent. But Mass Effect 2? Ick.

Worst top 10 list ever, Geometry Wars, #10, A CLASSIC, this is beginning of a trainwreck.

Also the comments are golden!

I like how the Honorable Mentions section shows Sine Mora and how you can get hit like 5 times during a boss with little effect on your timer.

The best part is that right after, DoDonPachi (1997) gets a mention... but the footage is of DaiFukkatsu, a game made 11 years later.

That whole list seems less like "Top 10 classics" and more like "Ten shmups we've played and can remember".

Edit: That closing voiceover! "There's literally DOZENS more 2D shooters out there"

Holy shit, dozens? Well fuck me that should keep me busy.

I made a post back in March making fun of these cookie-cutter lists that sites seem to feel the need to cobble together.
NTSC-J wrote:A group of scientists working with the Pew Research Center recently compiled a list of shmups based on all lists of shmups ever made:

10. Dodonpachi (I don't actually like bullet-hells, but it needs a mention for hardcore points)
9. Raiden (Remember Raiden? I don't actually play shmups, so I don't know which is the best or how many games there are in the series, but most shmups are the same so it's probably the first one)
8. Gradius (Remember Gradius? I don't actually play shmups, so I don't know which is the best or how many games there are in the series, but most shmups are the same so it's probably the first one. Also, horis for the win!)
7. R-Type (Remember R-Type? I don't actually play shmups, so I don't know which is the best or how many games there are in the series, but most shmups are the same so it's probably the first one. Also, horis for the win!)
6. Einhander (shit was like Blade Runner! Can't recall if it was a good game or not)
5. Space Invaders (Because RESPECT, right?)
4. Galaga (I don't know the difference between this and Space Invaders. But RESPECT, right?)
3. Sina More (it's NEW! and NEW is better! amazing graphics, story, items, cool)
2. Ikaruga (Treasure, 'nuff said)
1. Radiant Silvergun (I have not played this game for more than 10 minutes)
Now let's see how well I did with my predictions:
10. Geometry Wars 2 Didn't think they would rank their token modern hipster shmup so low.
9. UN Squadron Eh, alright.
8. Raptor Never would've guessed this one.
7. 1942 Should have guessed this, but I went with Raiden instead.
6. Thunder Force IV Same here. Not doing so well...
5. Space Invaders Bullseye!
4. R-Type Final Got this one, but didn't think it would rank so high.
3. Gradius V Got this and R-Type switched around.
2. Radiant Silvergun So close! That must mean the next one is...
1. Ikaruga lol. Do I laugh or do I cry?

They ended up in the honourable mentions, so you're not far off.

These lists are just content farms to sell ads with right? They don't seem to have any other purpose to exist.
