neogeo or supergun? Advice needed.

Post by Guardians Knight »

Hi, advice needed.

I'm busy setting up my new games room and realized I don't have a neogeo console. In fact I know nothing about them! So 30 mins on my lunch break researching told me that there is the AES home system where the carts cost a kings ransom; the MVS arcade system where the carts cost very little but requires a supergun; the neogeo cd that generally gets poo poo'd for crap loading times; then there is also the neogeo x system which seems to be a cheeky emulator machine dressed up to look like the real deal.

So, i kinda concluded that surely the best option to furnish my retro geek games room with snk loveliness was to look into getting a supergun and a MVS motherboard.

However as i already said, I know nothing about neogeos and not much more about superguns, so i turn to you, my shmup friends, to give me the pros and cons.

Thanks

Supergun. Just because it also opens up the world of PCBs. Do some reading before you jump in though.

If a PC or cheap system on a chip setup isn't what you're looking for, if you want the Real Deal...

I too vote for the Supergun. Reason: it can play more than just Neo-Geo games.

Then you can grab some awesome shmups too! The NG has some but definitely not a well rounded bunch...

Neo Geo AES. So you can be a REAL hot dog! along with all the other specialists in internet deductive sleuthing and high price fixin' freaks over at Neo-Geo Forums.

Well, shit, guess it's too late to get on that bandwagon, isn't it? I bought mine years ago, and now they're just too damn expensive.

And the games...agh!

MVS is fine but keep in mind that the wiring has some important differences.

How are superguns that handle both MVS and JAMMA, anyways? I'd get dedicated superguns for each system, personally, given that you can just consolize a MVS anyway.

One of these babies will let you safely connect an MVS to a JAMMA setup. Less than 30 bucks will let you enjoy the best of both standards.

If you're using a cabinet, sure. If I'm using superguns, I prefer having a sturdy box with a minimum of cabling to get confused about - fewer eggs in one basket too (MVS box broke? I'll just play JAMMA games for a while, etc.)

Yes, that's why I mentioned it. The adapter goes in between the MVS and the Supergun's JAMMA connector. No fuss, no muss.

Nah, that's not as robust as what I was talking about. In the setup you're describing, if the supergun is kaput, you don't get to play either system. You gotta power both systems at the same time, gotta pull them both out, have room for them both and have them line up properly, and dear god don't bump anything O_o I understand "consolizing MVS boards = sacrilege!" sentiment but it doesn't have to be expensive or permanent. A board to convert the MVS signals to JAMMA cab-friendly output would eliminate that middle stage (and the associated real / potential problems) entirely.

You only need that MVS>JAMMA adapter if you are looking to run a MULTI-slot Neogeo MVS mobo in a supergun/JAMMA wired cab. My understanding is that all of the single slot MVS mobos are straight JAMMA.

Are cart adapters still somewhat available? I have an old Phantom-1 which I use with my AES once in a blue moon. I still prefer MVS though, once you have it set up, getting good RGB out of it is less of a hassle.

yep and some even have controller ports.if your going the home route i'd say a one slot mvs board is easier/smaller/cheaper than multislots

Thanks guys!

Ok next question, what is the best bet for a supergun? I know raven games in London do one but they look to be out of stock. .....

What's your budget? Unlimited budget, Sigma AV7000 + 9000TB cannot be beat. Super awesome, built like a tank. Their Raijin unit (2 controllers + gun in one unit) is solid as well but a bit more beastly. Us Japan folks (myself, rancor) can locate them for you.
