The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Mario Kart 8 crap that prob. no-one cares about time. With that Rosalina build, I've gotten my way up to 2050 ranking in online mode (starts at 1000). The first 800 points weren't too rough, but the last 200 was starting to give me serious issues.
It could be because at this point everyone knows how to drift through the tracks no problem, and there's no more babies in cute buggy karts that are slow as shit, so it's more about the items you get .. I might have to switch to an even more ridiculous build (which I already have in mind)

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
From what I've seen online, gold kart setups with heavier characters seem very good, maybe the best. I prefer the handling of bikes though so I use Morton/Sport Bike/Cyber Slick/Cloud. The points system is more in line with MKWii and much improved over MK7 since it caps at 9999 and the amount you earn from a race drastically depends on how good the other players are (or rather, how high their points are). I'm currently at ~5000 and it's really slow going unless I'm in a lobby full of 5/6/7000 point players.
BTW for anyone unaware, the default speed online is 100cc but if you pick Custom you can search for 150cc races.

Tried out the new build (Morton/Standard Bike/Rollers/Cloud Glider) and while it does get rid of the major issues I had with the previous build (lack of acceleration; any hit takes too long to recover from, underwater/air speed too slow, drift burst speed too low) it's still just not that much better. And I keep getting put into games with laggy players and lower ratings.
Another issue I have is noobs tend to pick the easiest courses over and over. I'm the only one that votes for the harder ones most of the time. I guess they figure they have a better shot at winning in the RNG lottery than having to race a difficult course that they'll likely screw up on ..

I was running identical with Rosalina, but switched up rollers for slim. Getting slightly better results, but I'm still working on the Mirror cups. Looking forward to getting into time trial.Udderdude wrote:Tried out the new build (Morton/Standard Bike/Rollers/Cloud Glider) and while it does get rid of the major issues I had with the previous build (lack of acceleration; any hit takes too long to recover from, underwater/air speed too slow, drift burst speed too low) it's still just not that much better.

Rosalina/Standard Bike/Rollers is just too damn slow, sorry. :(

Don't Morton and Rosalina have the same stats? EDIT: NM, that's Roy.

I'm starting to like Morton. He sounds like Fat Albert when he gets a boost. Hey hey hey hey!
I got into a room with some players higher/evenly ranked with me and started getting gains again. Seems that's the key if you want to build your rank quickly.

Edit: Finally golded all the Mirror cups.
What's your Time Trial build? I just cleared the dev ghosts in Mushroom cup without much ado as Metal Mario - Flame Rider - Slick - Cloud. The ghosts all had fairly lousy setups, but I did clear them on the first try. I'm assuming it gets harder.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
By far the hardest time trials are Bone Dry Dunes and Grumble Volcano. Pick a cruiser-weight on a bike w/ slicks and you should be able to beat them if you drift perfectly and use optimal shortcuts.
The best time trial build is superheavy+fastest car type+slicks+super glider. You don't need this to beat the time trials though, if anything it makes it harder because drifting is very difficult with this little traction.
Been playing a bit on 4chan /v/'s tournament, it's got some stiff competition. Everyone is ruthless and constantly throwing shit at eachother even if they're already in good positions (1st-3rd) .. good practice.

I'm playing the HD version of The Wind Waker and I'm fighting against Ganondorf's puppet/beast form type thing, and I'm wondering how in the fuck I'm supposed to beat this thing! Seriously, I've tried everything I can think of. I recently discovered that the platforms are in fact reachable with the grappling hook, but I can't understand why they're there at all. The flames there are pointless considering that there aren't any sticks to light them with, and that if they were usable I could just use fire arrows instead. Also whenever I get up there I end up being wedged off by his poor collision. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Picked up a Wii U in anticipation of Smash 4, Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, Devil's Third, Kirby: Rainbow Curse, Star Fox, and Xenoblade Cross.
My library so far:
- NSMBU & NSLU (bundled)
- Deus Ex: HR Director's Cut
- The Wonderful 101
- Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge
- Nano Assault Neo
Planning to acquire Pikmin 3 and DKC: Tropical Freeze as well. Note to potential buyers of NG3: RE that all the extra content of the PS3/360 version was later made available as a free patch for the Wii U, and it's otherwise the definitive version of the game, due to the ability to use the tablet to display movelists or the main game screen.

It's still a shockingly poor entry in the series.

No, you're thinking of the initial version of NG3, where enemies literally cower in fear of Ryu and you can win nearly every encounter with one hand on the attack buttons. Razor's Edge is the bronze medal of the modern trilogy - it doesn't do anything particularly wrong, while not really excelling at anything. Lack of enemy variety and the fidgety kunai climb segments are its only real weak points. Unlike the original version, it's definitely worth a playthrough for fans of the series or genre.President_Obama wrote:It's still a shockingly poor entry in the series.
You have to at least give Hayashi's team credit for actually listening to the criticism of NG3 and making drastic changes to rectify its glaring flaws. It's a stark contrast to Sigma 2, which was a downgrade from NGII in every way other than its added content (though this can partly be blamed on the PS3's RAM bottleneck).

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Mario Kart bullshit update episode "Jeez stop using this thread as your personal blog already" : I finally broke 3000 rank points today, and not surprising, I got into the 150cc bracket and started racking in massive amounts of points. I got up to 3360 just in one sitting. I was getting 30 points for a win. That's crazy talk! In addition to this, the matches are far more crazy and fun now .. hopefully I've cleared the noob bracket and never have to see it again ..

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Bought a Wii U "for the kids", was waiting for the MK8 bundle. I also picked up Pikmin 3 for free, then DKF:TF, and Super Mario 3D-World yesterday.
Pleased with the console so far, does bring back good memories. DKC is absolutely not kid friendly, but so was DKC returns. The only other game I've played this year was Dark Souls 2, so it's a definite change of scenery for me, but I can't say I dislike it.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
you may have convinced me to buy it since I need some more games for my Wii U. I'm a huge hack-n-slash fan and my favorites are DMC3/4, Bayo, and NG2, but even something that's a bronze medal of the genre can be fun. Right now all I have is TW101, MK8, SM3DW, and a buncha wii-ware titles like EarthBound.Pretas wrote:No, you're thinking of the initial version of NG3, where enemies literally cower in fear of Ryu and you can win nearly every encounter with one hand on the attack buttons. I'm at about 1700 rank points in MK8 and just starting playing online last weekend (bought it over the weekend). I usually stick to lakitu or morton on varmint or the sports coupe with roller/crimson slim tires. haven't gotten all the gold 3 star trophies for 100cc yet.

Damn Udderdude! I'm only at 1600 or so in online points in regional versus. I'm going to try to get the stars in Mirror Mode for a Gold Kart, just wrapped up 150cc. I've been playing Wario with the Varmint... I go back and forth between the Azure Rollers and Cyber Slicks. I don't think I'll get that competitive at the game, I want it to stay fun and all. I wish I could copy the game progress over to my own account, everything is on my fiance's.
I got Ninja Gaiden 3 for $5 when I got my Wii U. Probably won't see it that cheap new anywhere else anytime soon. It was at Nebraska Furniture Mart. Didn't regret the purchase for that price at all, but I haven't played too much of it.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I'm nowhere near any of that. I haven't played much online, but I don't see myself getting much past 1000 anytime soon. Even there I'm lucky if I can manage to finish any race higher than 9th.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Picked up a Japanese WiiU on Sunday. Nintendo's E3 reveals and my inability to live without Fatal Frame 5 made me too weak to refuse when I saw one for a good price.
Really enjoying it so far, I quite like the Miiverse community. It's well done and Japanese people draw some pretty hilarious stuff on the message boards. Really makes the whole thing feel alive.
As for games I picked up Biohazard Revalations, Ninja Gaiden Razor's Edge, Famicom Remix, and NSMBU. I've spent most of my time with NG3 and the highly addictive FCRemix so far.
I've been holding off on NG3 for a long time because I had been wanting this version, but I've been a bit disappointed in it. It does a lot right, but there's some stupid shit in there too. The tutorials are ridiculously invasive and if you turn them off it stops displaying the QTE prompts (/facepalm). It's such a glaring flaw it makes you think the game wasn't even tested. Aside from that the whole thing feels a bit uninspired; so far its been fight after fight of soldier dudes plus rocket launcher dudes and very little variety. Hopefully that will change as I get further in. The boss fights I've seen so far are pretty terrible too, especially the helicopter fight. The camera really shows it's flaws there, the camera has always sucked, but I don't remember it ever being that bad.
It's not all bad though, the combat is as fluid and brutal as ever, and I'm enjoying the character variety a lot.
Now if only it were possible to play my VC Darius games outside of Wii mode...

It's not really, there's skill involved but also luck. Skill really only comes out on average over a longer period of time .. not a good tournament game unless you want to run like 32 races (every course in the game) all between the same group of players.Gaia wrote:Damn this Mario Kart 8 online stuff sounds competitive

Been slowly clawing my way up the rankings online, myself. At around 1450. Bowser+Flame Rider+Rollers+Bowser Kite. Don't hit first place all that often, but pretty solidly maintaining the 1-5 ranks. It's cool when you stick with a certain group for awhile and notice who the skilled players really are.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I just played the E3 demos of Bayonetta 2 and the included 'Bayonetta Remix' (at a UK press event).
I loved the first game, and based on this demo, I'm now really excited to play Bayonetta 2. I was hyped before, but now I've played it... wow! Ups the spectacle yet more, but keeps utterly playable, and the humour and character seems perfectly in tact. At worst, the Wii U game pad is slightly peculiar as a pad for this kind of action game, but I'm sure that will just be a matter of 30 mins to get used to it. The controls themselves where great; just the form factor of the gamepad felt a touch odd for a game that demands quite so much pace from the player.
Oh - and I played a couple of 8-player matches of Splatoon. Glorious fun and a great balance of strategy, action, depth and simplicity. However; the controls again. One stick for on the foot movement, one for camera direction, and then moving the pad about for aiming (though the camera stick can be used a little for that too. All got a bit Steel Battalion. I think it would be better on just two sticks, but I guess they have to make use of that hardware...

I skipped all the cutscenes so as not to spoiler myself, so I've played something like 20-30 minutes of Bayonetta 2. Not a defining amount to base an opinion on, but from what I saw you and I (the first game is one of my favourite triple-A action games, certainly) have reason to be optimistic. Really wicked stuff going on, some ace – and seemingly well balanced – new moves and abilities, and every part the spectacle.Some-Mist wrote:^ jealous.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
even though in that type of game the story doesn't really do anything, I would've done the same. new moves and abilities are a plus in my book, and the best part about games like bayo + vanquish is that along with all the flash there's the perfect balance of substance and replayability. I can't tell you how many games I've considered one-and-dones because it's all flash and no substance (ninja theory comes to mind with heavenly sword and enslaved).spadgy wrote:I skipped all the cutscenes so as not to spoiler myself, so I've played something like 20-30 minutes of Bayonetta 2. I just read yesterday that PG is excited for the release and if it was their choice... they plan on continuing the bayonetta series on the Wii U with a 3rd installment. I know we still haven't played the 2nd game in full, but it's hard to not be all giddy about that.

Found more info on the infamous blue shell here. I have been playing a bit of 7, as well as 8 and this seems to be accurate. It hits other racers on the way to first in 7, as well. I'm liking both games quite a bit, though 150cc can be maddening.
