Stuff I'm getting for Christmas...and a PS2 tech question.

Post by Icecap Veiwin »

So yeah, the Christmas season is coming up. It's been pretty well around the house; presents under the tree, food in the kitchen, just got home for winter break.

So this is what I got:

-Taito Legends (can't wait to play this!)
-Gunstar Super Heroes

Annd...today, some guy at school bought me Gradius V!

But....it's a blue disc -- my PS2 won't run blue discs properly. I think either the laser is worn or out of alignment. How should I go around fixing it? Should I do it myself or send it to Sony for the nominal fee?

And, how should I exactly figure out the problem?
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars

I think that is a good walk through with lots of nice large photos.

Enjoy your games! Gradius V is one of my favorites. Sucks it doesn't work on your ps2 :(. It makes my ps2 sounds like a vacuum cleaner, but it still works.

Even if I don't get it to work, I can still give it to my friend -- he's a huge fan of the Gradius series, and he's getting a new PS2 for Christmas.

Thanks for the site, this should help -- I don't know if my dad wants me tinkering with the PS2 though! I'll show him the walkthrough and ask him if I can do it.

Edit: Two things.

1. My dad isn't willing to shell out the money for a new PS2 or repair from Sony, so I'll just give it to a friend for safekeeping until I get my own PS2.
2. Apparently, shmupping is hereditary - my dad said he played the original Gradius when he was a kid.

Slim-line PSTwo will read it fine, as will PS2's that have a "+" sign on the side of the box.
"Farewell to false pretension
Farewell to hollow words
Farewell to fake affection
Farewell, tomorrow burns"

That's good; my friend is getting a PStwo.

As said before, GV will only be there a couple years, until I get a job and eventually my own PS2/two. I mean, I'm going to have to move out someday, might as well buy the stuff before I do.

I had some odd problems when i got V, i had to restart the ps2 alot of times and eventually it runs, ive already learned what sounds the ps2 makes when it doesent run , ive also noticed that opening the disk tray can work better, i hope it wont scratch it too much :/

If the ArsTechnica article doesn't work for you, try standing the PS2 vertical and playing the blue disc - worked for me. But then again, mine is a bit retarded - vertical for blue discs, horizontal for everything else...
