Ryan Adams, though it's mainly 1980s arcade games he seems to be interested in...

Keep playing until you get your first gray hair and beer abs.

"Trying" isn't really necessary. You can get really far by just playing.

Shmups aren't necessarily that hard, but they can be a pretty huge timesink.

Watch replays, read strategy guides and most importantly, keep playing.

Yeah, playing is the big thing. Things like gameplay videos (As in one credit ones rather than the kind you'll see in reviews, or just demonstrations or whatever), and strategy guides can speed up the process a little bit. Probably the best way is to focus on one game at a time, but you want to make sure it's one that you want to sink a lot of hours in, because it takes a lot of hours.

Memorize everything till you have the skills to beat games without memorizing, than memorize some more so you can take on the harder and higher scoring routes.

Or, as a fighting game tournament player once told me on how to get better at fighters "just play a bunch."

This is to the keyboard users. Do you have movement set to the arrow keys, or to wasd?

Arrow keys, but really, try both and see what feels more natural for you.

Either are fine. Using WASD at the moment because I hurt my right shoulder.

Arrows. I grew up playing DOS games on a keyboard, so right hand for movement, left hand to shoot just feels more natural when playing a keyboard.

Seems like a unanimous decision for arrow keys. I was thinking that maybe the fps genre had gotten gamers to use WASD more. I know that back in the day when play cs 1.6 it really got me used to it.

I'm just experimenting, changing things up from my regular pad and arcade stick. Learning a new controller is a different kind of challenge.

Kind of bad at keyboards in general, but I use arrow keys. I always lose my place on the keyboard when using WASD for some reason. I imagine it's because I never liked FPS games much, and used to play flash games with arrow keys.

Tate questions:

Are Gunbird 2 (US Dreamcast), Under Defeat (J Dreamcast) and Ginga Force (J 360) "left-hand-side-of-a-CRT-at-the-bottom"* tate-able?

*there has to be a more concise way to say that, right? lol

From what I remember, Gunbird 2 and Under Defeat rotate with the left side of the TV screen being the bottom.

EDIT:

For a person who doesn't care about TATE, is the PS1 Gekioh Shooting King of comparable quality in its YOKO mode to the Saturn port of Shienryu? Aside from the lack of score-saving, I'm talking more about things like difficulty, accuracy, slowdown, etc.

I can say with certainty that Gunbird 2 (DC) rotates so that the left side of the screen is at the bottom.
Under Defeat (DC) is also this way
EDIT: I think most Xbox 360 shmups can rotate in either direction

@Nintendo Saturn : AFAIK, Ginga Force is a "vertizontal", kinda like Chaos Field or Mars Matrix, so it does not need to be TATE-'d.

@mastermx : I use the arrow keys.

There should be a demo for it, so why not give that a shot and see how it strikes you?

BulletMagnet: Though I already am in possession of the Cave box, Ketsui and DDP SDOJ, I have yet to secure a 360.

When I do, I'll give it a swirl (thanks for the heads up).
