Taking planes
Taking planes
I don't know about you, but...
I'm going to fly back home in a few hours (2.30pm of the 15th), and i was thinking about how much i like taking planes and "quickly" be somewhere else, which in this case is my home country. There is something about the whole...i don't know, mystique of plane travelling that really makes me feel good. One experience that i really *adore* is having to do some business (i have a meeting with my supervisor early tomorrow morning) and then say "cool, i'm off to eat pizza this evening in Rome, see you in a couple of weeks" (i.e. the thought of having different phases of a daily routine in different countries).
What are your experiences on the subject, fellow travellers?

After a seven hour flight to Toronto in August, I had to wait a further two hours on the plane while a thunderstorm passed and then payed $250 for a room for the night because my connecting flight had been cancelled.

I don't fly all that often, but I do somewhat enjoy it. Granted, as I recently mentioned in another thread I really don't travel all that well, but do handle three hours in an airplane a lot better than fifteen hours in a car. If possible, I prefer to do most of my travelling on one of these...

I love flying, although getting in and out as well as to and from airports is always a hassle.
I can never sleep on planes, but for some reason I always have a good time. My longest flight was to Tokyo, which is about twelve hours.
Before 2004 I had flown once in my life, since October last year I have flown five times (counting return flights as a single flight). My new job has something to do with this, and I will be flying again in February to LA.

And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.

The last time I flew anyplace must have been around ten years ago...to Florida and back for vacation (not coincidentally, that was also the last such vacation I remember taking, heh). I never minded it too much, if memory serves (just that darn popping in your ears!), but nowadays with all the new security measures and such being taken (not to mention higher costs and whatnot) who knows if it'd be anywhere near the same experience it was way back then.
Love it. Even better when you have to take trips for a large company so that you can just make a call and be done with it, skipping the huge check-in lines in airports to use the automated systems.
I don't get dizzy on planes (well, I did throw up my first time on a plane a long, long time ago) so the only real issue is the fact that airplanes are so dry that my eyes sting when I accidentally rub them on a long-distance flight.
For some reason, I also actually like the airport atmosphere.

I love travelling. By car, plane, foot, whatever. I like going places. The first time I came to Maine, I drove from Virginia, and it was uplifting, especially since the trip was to meet with someone I cared for deeply. Lots of pretty scenery. <3 New England.
I'm flying to DC next week for the holidays. I can't wait!

Hyakugojyuuichi! Sorry, reflex response to thread title.
Anyway, I like traveling, but it's hard to figure out why. I guess it's the fact of seeing a new place for a while and then being able to leave. New places are always interesting. Maybe it's that people always have a reason when they travel, business or personal, and that reason provides a stronger overall sense of purpose or something. I don't know.
I have had a lot of delays the last few times I flew, mostly at O'Hare. There's not a lot to do in an airport, besides walk back and forth or read a book, so I'm kinda down on that. But somehow it still does feel neat going through an airport, as long as you escape within a couple of hours.

Anyway, I do like flying, even though I've only done it in the country. Still, it's cool to go from one corner of the US to the other and get there the same evening/next morning. Probably won't do it again for a while, though.

This is your captain speaking. I have just turned on the fasten seatbelt sign as we have encountered an assailant. You may notice an occasional pink bullet as we pass through this swarm, which may require some course corrections to safely navigate. Please be assured that this plane has been engineered with the smallest hitbox that modern technology can provide. Be attitude for gains, and enjoy your flight.

Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
I get airsick easily
which is ironic, considering my mother is a flight attendant and would get us severely discounted rates
[though, stand-by]

I used to be fascinated by flight, and always enjoyed being on a plane when I was a kid, but that all changed last year. My friends managed to get me off my arse to go the Wacken '04 festival. The flight to Berlin airport was great, as was the festival, but the return flight a few days later put me off ever flying again*.
We checked in 2 hours early, as usual, and all breathed a sigh of relief when we were finally allowed to board the plane (not a grumpy sigh - we were exhausted and probably still drunk in most cases
). We were sitting there waiting to take off when the pilot announced that we'd have to stay there for another hour while certain checks were made. It seemed to take 3 hours and I've no idea why we weren't just let back into the airport, but when the technician chaps had finished their job and we were about to take off, one of the passengers bolted to the front of the plane and started talking to the hostesses. Five minutes later the pilot announced that there'd be a further wait as the guys working on the plane had left some hatch or flap open, and he thanked the passenger for pointing it out. It must have been around the wing for this guy looking out of his window to spot it, and it frightened me to think that such a small mistake could have killed us, so naturally I was pretty scared during that flight. Some of my friends are absolutely petrified by planes at the best of times, and they were quite visibly uncomfortable the whole time.
A rubbish and poorly-scrawled story, aye, but it certainly changed my tune.

I become as sick as a wreck when I fly for longer than one or *maybe* two hours. I feel so ill that I don't even want to get up to go to the lavatory. Yup.... I held it in for the entire 15 hour flight to Hong Kong...
It only started happening since I was 10 or so though, I remember I LOVED flying when I was even younger.

One of them, yes. They were sort of huge in early 2001. Hyakugojyuuichi was probably the first viral flash video, unless assorted Nose Pilot stuff counts.Minzoku wrote:I get airsick easily  which is ironic, considering my mother is a flight attendant and would get us severely discounted rates :?
