Feel free to contribute and I'll update this first post with any good entry! No vaporware please - try to offer some proof of the games' existence.
P.S. let's limit ourselves to title, year of release, and company name. I don't want this to turn in an endless debate about comments: XXX is awesome, why you say it's crap...

-remove Z-Gundam from NES

-remove Psyvariar from Dreamcast list
-pretty much review the entire MSX section, ask Shatterhand for details ^_^
-MegaCD/32X: remove AX101 & Wings of War
Feel free to contribute and I'll update this first post with any good entry! No vaporware please - try to offer some proof of the games' existence.
P.S. let's limit ourselves to title, year of release, and company name. I don't want this to turn in an endless debate about comments: XXX is awesome, why you say it's crap...

Well, I'll tell you something that shouldn't be in there...
Psyvariar was never released on Dreamcast (only the sequel was).
The DC Xenocide files need 3 additions:
Chaos Field, MileStone, 2004 (thankfully, we've got a review for it)
Rajirugi, MileStone, 2006 (might as well add it while you're at it)
Trizeal, Triangle Service, 2005

Hmm, do the Xenocide files include doujin stuff?Damocles wrote:PC:

Also, weren't a handful of old shmups re-released on the PS2 under some label or other? I think Sonic Wings and Moon Cresta were 2 of 'em...Xexex was supposed to be, but never was.
Oh, almost forgot, the Taito Memories collections as well. And I guess that Chaos Field, Rajirugi, and Under Defeat will be posted in the "Arcade" section as well? And Senko no Ronde wouldn't qualify?
On the "back burner" (awaiting confirmation) I guess we should keep an eye on the PS2 Trizeal port and Shiki III, not to mention the PS3 Gradius...any others I'm forgetting?
EDIT: Ack, another thing...should the XBox "Shikigami no Shiro" entry be split into the "original" edition, the "Evolution" edition, Red and Blue, etc?

The MSX xenoicide files should be updated too.
There's no Zanac 3 for MSX (That was a homebrew hack), and Laydock 2 and Super Laydock 2 are actually the same game.
There's a game which name I still didn't discoverd (I think it's called just "Aydock", but I am not 100% sure yet), made by T&E Soft, which was a parody of the Laydock series. I think this was made just for a coverdisk (Still not 100% sure) so it's not a full blown game. This was confused as "Laydock 2" back when there was not internet to search for info. the real Laydock 2 is what many people called "Super Laydock 2" because Super Laydock was more known than the original Laydock.
All those also could be considered borderlines:
Afteroids (It's Asteroids with a big scrolling playfield)
Alien Syndrome
Battle Chopper (You play with a chopper with a view from behind, like SPace Harrier)
Blasteroids
Cetus (This one is more like the arcade game Buck Rogers)
Cannon Bullet (Two tanks try to destroy each other)
Choplifter (Is this considered a shmup? I am not sure)
Craze (This is an rpg/arcade adventure where you control a ship, destroying enemies and dodging bullets. It's not a shmup really)
Danger X4 (Is defender a shmup? If it is , then this is too)
Desolator (Again, it plays like Defender...)
Fantasy Zone 1 & 2 (Same thing... I personally consider Defender and all stuff derivative from Defender to be shmups)
Final Zone (It's more like Ikari Warriors)
Galaga (There's an eternal argue about if this is a shmup or not. I think it is)
Galaxian (Same as above)
Guardic (Single screen shmup, but you can move in both X and Y axis )
Gunfright (I don't know what the hell this is doing here, this is no shmup)
Helitank (It plays a lot like Tank Batallion)
Jet Bomber (It plays like Zaxxon, with isometric view, X and Z movement scrolling into Y axis. It's a lot better than Zaxxon though)
Jagur (This is no shmup either. It's an overhead shooter with some RPG elements)
King & Balloon (Same problem as Galaga)
Maxima (again, same problem as Galaga)
Mr. Ghost (Hmm.. I am not sure about that... it plays like a horizontal shoot'em up, but there's no forced scroll, and instead of scrolling, you advance screen by screen...)
Pippols (I consider it a shmup, some people may say no.. I dunno)
Polar Star (Does anyone knows Moonsweepr? It plays a lot like Moonsweeper.. I personally think it's a shmup. It has a 3D point of view, but you only move in the X and Z axis, and the game scroll only into the Z axis)
Quarth (This is also know as Block Hole... It's more a puzzle game than a shmup.. you don't dodge bullets or nothing like that)
Robotwars (Berzerk is not a shmup, so neither this is)
SF Violence (More like Alien Syndrome)
Ski Commander (You control a skier, from a behind point of view. You shoot incoming enemies, and the game scrolls in the Z axis. You can ONLY move in the X axis, but you can jump in the Y axis. Nah, this is no shmup)
Space Maze Attack (No shmup)
Starship Simulator (I doubt this is a shmup, I never played this game anyway)
Tank Battalion (Is this a shmup?)
TNT (It plays like Commando or Ikari Warriors...)
Valkyr (same problem as Galaga)
Vortex Raider (This is no shmup)
Wrangler (SAme problem as Defender)
Xybots (The arcade game is no shmup, neither is the MSX one)
Zaxxon (Is it or is it not a shmup?)
Zoom 909 (It's a conversion of the game "Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom", which plays more like Space Harrier, so I think people will not call it a shmup)
There are also lots of games to add
Safari X (Policy , 1984 - Vertical shmup)
Sea Sardine (MSX Magazine, 1991 - Horizontal shmup)
Submarine Shooting (Hudson, 1983 - Horizontal shmup... if anyone ever complained about MSX games having jerky scroll, please check out this.. there's nothing more jerky than this)
Spirit Power (Makottotto - 1990 - Vertical shmup)
Star Laser (Horizontal shmup)
Space Force (vertical)
Saint Dragoon (Storm/Sales Curve/Jaleco - conversion of the arcade game)
Void Runner (Mastertronic - 1986 - It plays a bit like Centipede, but with lots of cool twists)
Sky Vision (Single screen shmup with movement only in the X axis)
Skramble (Accksoft, Horizontal... rip-off from the arcade game of same name)
Ship Wars (Single Screen shmup... I think it was made in Brazil)
Shoot them up (Single screen shmup... I am not sure if this should be included, it's a crap homebrew game with a very cool backdrop, music ripped-off from Vampire Killer but nearly no gameplay.... it's more a tech demo)
Turbo Girl (Dinamic - 1988 - Vertical shmup)
Ultraman (Bandai - It has horizontal shmup levels and fighting levels. It sucks)
Xetra (vertical shmup)
Nebula Wars (Single screen shmup with both X and Y axis movement)
Moonbase Attack (The Secound Foundation - This game has some crazy sound routines which makes the MSX play some amazing music and sound effects (There's even a warning about that before the game loads), but the game itself is just a single screen shmup where you move left or right trying to hit the enemy ship in the other side of the screen which also only moves left and right and is trying to destroy you)
Outland (Vertical shmup)
Mission-A (Lamant, 1989, horizontal shmup)
Rona (Dixie, 1990, Excellent vertical cute'em up)
Blaster Burn (Compile, 1990 - Vertical shmup.. this game was distribute in the Disk Station magazines, each new edition had a new level for the game)
Famicle Parodic (Bit² - 1988 - Excellent vertical cute'em up with characters from Nyancle Racing)
Famicle Parodic 2 (Bit² - 1990 - Even better sequel to the original)
There are lots of crap info in the games too, it could use a little clean-up.
After writing about all those games, I feel it's a big shame so many of those games will never be played by most people. Famicle Parodic 2 is so damn awesome, and even most MSX users never played. Rona also is excellent, and it's very obscure.
Outland is very nice too, and this is a game I only found on internet, I think nearly no one knows it either.

About doujin stuff: good question. I really don't know what criteria it uses, but of course the homebrew scene has grown a lot recently, so I guess it will be harder to ignore it in future...BulletMagnet wrote:Hmm, do the Xenocide files include doujin stuff?Damocles wrote:PC:

About games yet to be released: let's wait the release, we already have plenty of work with the missing oldies.
About Shikigami: you tell me, how was it released? I lack knowledge on these releases.

Oh man, we need these added ASAP (all are arcade shmups):
Chopper I: The Legend of Air Cavalry
SNK, 1988
You fly a helicopter here, very nice sound and animations for the time along the lines of Prehistoric Isle 1930 and Psycho Soldiers. You're in a modern war setting. Fun.
Darwin 4078
Data East, 1986
Futuristic vertical shmup that holds up great for its time due to the large variety of weapons and catchy music.
Heavy Metal
Sega, 1985
Vertical game that places you in a free-roaming tank, a precursor to Aurail, however the screen scrolls automatically at a pretty brisk speed for this kind of game. The left side of your screen shows your shields/etc. and is also taken up but a scanner that covers the next ten screens in front of you. At any time you can hold down a button to "ping" the area for larger ground based enemies and launch missiles at them. You get big points by blowing up stuff from like ten screens away. If you don't things get hairy since they can launch long-range missiles at you. It's fun and very fast paced.
Ozma Wars
SNK, 1979
You could make an argument for this being the first "proper" shmup ever with its scrolling and more defined levels and boss type encounters. The feel has a lot in common with Space Invaders from which it was clearly inspired. Interesting curiosity that any shmup fan should take a look at.
Sasuke vs. Commander
SNK, 1980
Guwange only obscenely primitive. Again, interesting mainly for enthusiasts who want to check out all the early games of the genre that weren't just direct clones of Phoenix/Galaga/Space Invaders.
Satan of Saturn
SNK, 1981
Garish Galaga clone where your ship moves back and forth on the bottom of the screen as waves of enemies fly in for you to get combos on.
Super Cobra
Konami, 1981
This is the sequel to Scramble for cryin' out loud! Not as good though.
Thunder Dragon and Thunder Dragon 2
NMK/Tecmo, 1991 and 1993
The former is a horrendously bland Raiden ripoff (going so far as to USE MUSIC FROM THE RAIDEN GAMES, I believe the sprites are ripped directly from Twin Cobra) in it, don't know how it even got released, the game is crap. It feels like some bootleg Neo Geo hack or something. The sequel though is great, lots of really well-animated clouds like in the 1943 games and ports. Lots of points and combos to earn (you can even blast the bricks that make up the words "LEVEL 1 START" at the beginning of each mission). Feels so polished and looks so different you can't even believe it's called Thunder Dragon 2.
Zoar
Data East, 1982
River Raid-esque game with larger sprites where you can change your altitude to fly over obstacles and hit enemies at different heights like Captain Skyhawk on the NES.

Heck, just look at the PC Shmups Database over at Shoot the Core...that's a long stinkin' list, even if you limit it to games which eventually got a "commercial" release, a la ZUN's stuff. There are reviews of doujin stuff on the site though...maybe a separate (large) section for it would be better? But I guess one would hafta take that up with malc.Turrican wrote:About doujin stuff: good question. Heh, just figured I'd mention 'em.About games yet to be released: let's wait the release, we already have plenty of work with the missing oldies.
To the best of my knowledge, there was an "original" release, and two "Evolution" releases: the "red" version (which has the female chars on the cover) and the "blue" version (which features the males). What the differences are between them all, of if there are any other releases I'm missing, I don't know, maybe someone else would.About Shikigami: you tell me, how was it released? I lack knowledge on these releases.

- Bio-Ship Paladin (1990, UPL/American Sammy)

The version of Thunder Dragon that has music from Raiden is a bootleg hack. The genuine version (which didn't work in MAME until recently due to tricky protection) has original music.Neo Rasa wrote:Thunder Dragon and Thunder Dragon 2

Agree with you on the inexplicable utter non-resemblance between TD and TD2, though.
Interesting fact about Thunder Dragon 2: This was one of the very first video games Manabu Namiki (of Battle Garegga/Batrider/Dimahoo fame) composed music and designed sound effects for. His fondness for "quirky" English speech can be seen already.

Portable shmups...
Let's not forget the few shmups there are on the Wonderswan Color/Crystal, and Atari Lynx! Also, a few GBA shmups have gone unmentioned, and this does not sit well with the Zwei.
WSC:
Judgement Silversword (2004, Qute)
Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed (2003, Bandai)
RUN=DIM: Return to Earth (2002, Digital Dream)
SD Gundam Operation U.C. (2002, Bandai)
Atari Lynx:
Gates of Zendocon (1989, Epyx)
Robotron 2084 (1991, Shadowsoft)
Zarlor Mercenary (1990, Epyx)
GBA:
Gunstar Super Heroes
Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced (Gyruss, Scramble, Time Pilot)

I haven't played Gunstar Super Heroes, but if it has shmup inside, it must be a section of the game. which torns me: Turrican II was removed from the Amiga list, after all. Yes, the Snes list has Rendering Ranger, but it also has Cybernator so I'm incline to see these as borderliners who just weren't removed last time.
Can an hybrid game / borderliner be listed at Xenocides if it features proper shmups stages? Well, I'd say it's a question of percentages, really. Turrican II, three shmup stages: no. The Guardian Legend, fair to say 50% of the game is shmup, so yes. The same probably applies to Sigma Star Saga, which I listed there although haven't had the chance to play it yet.
Actually, while I'm here, I'll post other doubts I have. Robotron, to name one: sure, it's manic and frenetic, and enemies appear in waves. but I'm not entirely sure it fits the shmup category. Robotron > Smash TV > Alien Syndrome, Mercs Alien Breed... More on the Shooter / borderliner side. Although it's true that Robotron and Smash TV could be kept in because of their single screen gameplay... I'm torn, really.
Asteroids isn't listed, probably because rocks don't shoot you, I guess. However, Blasteroids is, and Sinistar. I still see these more fitting as "shooters" than proper shmups. Then again the multiscrolling freedom will be in Bosconian and Thuderforce II, so I need to think.
I don't think there's any doubt that Defender and its spawning are shmups, though, as the Fantasy Zones, Datastorm and clones show in all the lists.
I agree with shatterhand about Quarth though: it is listed in the GB Xenocides, but probably just to add some meat to that list... The game is a puzzle game, pretty much.
I'll have a look at the other games you mention WSC Zweihander.

I myself added Quarth to the MSX list, but I was naive and stupid back at that time, hehe
I think it has something to do with the fact that many reviews of that game used to say it was a "shoot'em up and puzzle crossover" or something like that.
Some games are really hard to classify. I've put Safari X there for example, but I am still not 100% sure it's a shmup or not. The game has a vertical scrolling playfield where you control a car which shoot stuff. There are places where some boomerangs and stuff fly at you which feel pretty much shmuppy (With you dodgind and shooting), and there are some indians in the background which shoot you... but besides that you are left dodging trees in the background. The game is horribly simple (Everything loops after 45 seconds I think)...
And I think any Galaga/Galaxian/Space Invaders wanna be should BE in the Xenocide files. I can't understand how some people say they are no shmups.

Here are the exact titles of the PS2 re-releases I mentioned earlier:
Oretachi Geasen Zoku Sono 1: Scramble
Oretachi Geasen Zoku Sono 4: Time Pilot
Oretachi Geasen Zoku Sono 5: Moon Cresta
Oretachi Geasen Zoku Sono 6: Sonic Wings
Oretachi Geasen Zoku Sono 10: Terra Cresta
Also, in case you missed it when posted earlier, I think that Chaos Field, Rajirugi, Trizeal, and Under Defeat (Senko no Ronde?) need to be posted under "Arcade" as well.

Okie. I wasn't sure about the technical info on RUN=DIM and Judgement, so i checked gamefaqs. (who are wrong about those Lynx games being by Atari, as far as development goes.. maybe they were misinformed.) As for the 2 Gundam games mentioned: most of either game is played flying through weightless space, with a few ground stages (oh noes, gravity!). It's somewhat of a beat-em-up (ala the game refuses to scroll unless you wipe out the current batch of goons), but i'd classify it as a shmup.. then again, i'd classify Gunstar Super Heroes as a shmup.Turrican wrote:I'll have a look at the other games you mention WSC Zweihander.
Which raises the ever-present question of: what borderliners are allowed? Hell, I see Contra: HC in the Megadrive list, yet no Gunstar Heroes.. Also, I see Tempest and Gyruss, but no Rez or Panzer Dragoon. wth?
Maybe some ammendments can be made... though rail shooters are a tad bit more questionable than a run-n-gun.
With all seriousness aside, METAL SLUG For The Win!!

Well, the Contra review is one of the first ones, so the site was not very shmup-dedicated yet.Zweihander wrote:Which raises the ever-present question of: what borderliners are allowed? Actually, Shmups Mk2 had a whole Xenocide list called "Borderliners - not shmups but shooty enough" that collected many shooters, run'n guns games from all systems.
Nowadays, the section is gone, and probably it is better so. The point is, if you allow many borderliners, any action game will show up. It is better to stay focused. (at least, I assume this to be the main reason behind it)
About Tempest / Gyruss: that's an entirely different story! Tempest and Gyruss' ships move on an axis, and they fight enemies on the same geometric plane, enemies that come in swarms... You see, they look 3D but play 2D. In other words they're legitimate shmups (well, imho). After all, Gyruss is different from Galaga only in perspective, but since when perspective has been a criteria? We all call verts and horiz "shmups", don't we?
Rez / Panzer Dragoon / Space Harrier, are not shmups. They are awesome shooters, but their gameplay works on a 3D environment: ie, the enemies you fight are not on the same plane as your avatar is.
