Hi all,
A friend directed me here. I've got an old WrestleMania cabinet we modified into a MAME cabinet years ago, but with a recent house move and reorganization, I've started thinking that I'd prefer one of the Japanese sit-down cabinets, like the Astro City or similar ones. I understand most of them are usually imported from Japan, but I'm just trying to gather information now, in terms of best sources, maybe ways they can be modded (eg. do they take a standard VGA input? What's the best way now to convert the controls to PC inputs?).
I'm in southwestern Ontario, about an hour out from Toronto.
Thanks. :)

First off, welcome and I salute you for your candy cab quest. It is by far the best way to experience arcade games and shmups in particular.
here is a sales thread for a very reliable member who is ordering a container of candy cabs. It looks like Bareknuckleroo (also from ontario) might be preordering a cab, maybe you can organize shipping some cabs together to save some money.

The Astro and New Astro City are stock JAMMA only, no VGA. Very Excellent cabs, I own one.
The New Net Cities are VGA and iirc are JVS stock, likely more difficult to run regular JAMMA games on these (a hard to find adapter might be required). I'm not too crazy about the look of these cabs, but apparently the monitor is great for VGA/hi-rez.
Blast City is the middle ground and VERY easy to use JAMMA or a VGA video source. Very great beginner cab, but unfortunately the monitors usually have slight geometry and convergence imperfections. Some people are not fans and fear that the monitor chassis are prone to failure but many others have had great success. I recommend them, I own 2.
Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions. The forum Arcade Otaku is extremely helpful for candy cab noobs.

Re: Good source for a candy cab?
Thanks for the info! (yes, Bareknuckleroo is who pointed me here.
)
It sounds like the Blast City cabinet may be best for me, then (I might still consider a Net Cities one, although I agree, on aesthetics I prefer the others). I'll look into the group buy option you linked to; maybe someone in the area might have another option should they want something else from the group-buy too?
Much appreciated.
