I have a modded SCPH-70004 here that has some problems. I bought it used a while ago and haven't opened it up, so I don't know what exact modchip it has, but it from the instructions on it I know that it needs one reset button press for PS1 copies/NTSC originals and two presses for PS2 copies/NTSC originals. Issues are:
- PAL PS1 game: needs the two reset button presses when it really shouldn't, but image appeared fine.
- NTSC PS1 game: part of the image isn't displayed. http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=r0w3nt&s=8 (don't mind the LCD, I just used it for the photo, it's the same on a CRT)
Games I tried are all originals. I also tried a NTSC PS2 game and got a corrupted boot screen (http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2usybg3&s=8), ingame it looked fine though. Also both PS1 PAL and NTSC boot screens have the same alignment issue that is seen on the example picture above. CDs need a good 10+ seconds to load so the laser isn't in the best condition anymore either...
Anybody got an idea what is going on here?

Re: Image issues on NTSC games with modded slim PAL PS2
I did attempt to disassemble it, but hit a roadblock when I couldn't get the motherboard out. According to guides it should come out easily with all screws out, but that wasn't the case for me. Then again it's the first time I opened a PS2
Can anyone tell me if the aforementioned issues are typical for certain PS2 modchips?

Certain chips I have come across make the boot screen like that, so that's fine.
Your NTSC image is being squashed to PAL standards - this is because there is no "PSX fix" active on the chip currently as PS2 render PS1 games to their native video standard - NTSC or PAL.
Finding out what chip it is would allow you to access any settings that it has to remedy this.
As for booting PAL PS1 games, I've no idea.

Re: Image issues on NTSC games with modded slim PAL PS2
Oddly enough I picked up a modded PAL PS2 slim 90004 in asia.
It was modded with a matrix chip version 1.93 and allowed me to do that NTSC/PAL color fix. and save settings without bricking it.
Without your chip having a config menu like a matrix I don't see how you can use it for NTSC games.
The slim I picked up boots everything but NTSC-J PS1 games, copies or oringals. Plays NTSC-J/U PS2 imports, copies, etc perfectliy.
And it plays NTSC-U PS1 originals perfectly.
I did get it to boot an import PS1 game once, I guess the chip was installed incorrectly, as I've never had a modded system not play imports.
I was happy the internal power supply on this slim is able to run on 110v current just like PAL PS1's.

It makes no sense for NTSC-J PS1 titles not to work...

Re: Image issues on NTSC games with modded slim PAL PS2
I have a matrix-modded PAL slim (and a few NTSC ones). To boot PS1 titles I usually have to press circle during boot up. Without this it sometimes works, but it's safer to use it.

Circle doesn't fix the alignment issue on mine.

yours is likely pretty much incompatible. Most of the earlier PS2 except the Matrix Infinity and it's clones couldn't handle NTSC PS1 games when used with a PAL PS2. You might want to look into a chipped PS1 instead.

Yeah, I pretty much suspected this. I have several chipped PS1s so it's not a big deal. The important part is that PS2 imports seem to work well.
