What are some better OLDER shmups? too good for its time?

Post by TheRed »

Well I was wondering what some good older shmups would be? Around he NES or SMS or so?

I enjoy GUN-NAC (if you don't mind rabbits and carrots, lol) on the nes.......but what else? Looking for something that just seems too good for it's time.

doesn't have to be console...older arcade is fine...late 80's maybe 90?

a friend showed me this crazyass manic on SMS that was really great, very Raizing reminiscent if they would have been around the 8bit era.

forgot its name tho.. maybe someone else knows?

The SMS has the Fantasy Zone series. Pretty fun. On the NES Tiger Heli's pretty good.

On the NES check out Zanac, Sky Shark, S.C.A.T., 1942: The Battle of Midway, and Abadox.

It's old, but that Data East arcade shmup Darwin is great. Really nice variety of weapons.

Absolutely play Metal Stoker on the TG-16. Not a "shmup" per say since you have a lot of free roaming in the levels. It's more reminiscent of the underrated Operation Logic Bomb.

Recca on the NES. Absolutely blew my mind the first time I played it.

Also I'm very interested in the manic SMS shmup that sven666 mentioned, if anyone knows what this might be, please share!

He must refer to Compile's Power Strike II... Cannot think to any other licensed product that can suit the manic definition.

Power Strike 2?

That's the best shmup the SMS has to offer IMO.

The MSX has some great shmups. Space Manbow and Aleste 2 are in my top 5 shmups of all time. Super Laydock 1 & 2 are awesome stuff (But the original Laydock is just average stuff). The original Aleste is pretty good too. Famicle Parodic 1 & 2 are very cool, Rona is a nice cute'em up, Sea Sardine has some interesting bosses, Hydefos is pretty good too.

On NES, Zanac, Recca and Gun-Nac.

On Arcade, try out Argos and Omega Fighter.

And if you want to try some Amiga shmups, I recommend checking out Apidya, Battle Squadron, Uridium 2 and Disposable Hero.

There you have a good list of shmups around the late 80s and early 90s :)

Power Strike (SMS - Compile) and Zanac (NES - Compile) own the older systems respectively.

The NES port of Tiger-Heli is great fun. However, even better than that is Tiger-Heli's sequel Twin Cobra which has a really fun NES port that is hard as nails.

Twin Cobra kicks ass! I didn't realize that it's on the NES. I would get Twin Cobra over Tiger Heli.

There is no Aleste 2 for Master System, and Power Strike II is probably the rarest Sega Master System game there is. Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy of Recca?

Those games rock, but they aren't SMS or NES exclusives. Also, Power Strike/Aleste and Zanac both have better versions on MSX, though the SMS and NES versions rock too and the MSX Zanac EX is only slightly better. MSX is also an old school system, though.

Don't worry, as rare as Power Strike II is, it will never be rarer than Recca, nor so expensive. I got mine for 20 euro or so, complete.

I heard that Gun Nac is also one of the rarer NES games, but it usually sells for pretty cheap.

Hello fellow shmuppers:

On the NES, try out Over Horizon. I was pleasantly surprised that a game this old has many things done right.

Cheers.

with my recent forays into the msx, and c64. far too many to mention.

i am consistently amazed at some of these games. IO, katakis, blood money, space manbow, aleste, etc, etc, etc...

cheers to Turrican, Shatterhand, Blue Lander (wherever he may be), and Herr Schatten for the motivation!
I have no sig whatsoever.

For the NES, I'd recommend checking out Crisis Force and Dragon Spirit. Both good verts, and CF is an underappreciated Konami shooter.

I don't think it's underappreciated... It's more a matter of it being quite rare and import only. But when you stumble in net reviews (see OPCFG) it's usually praised a lot.

I forgot a really important one. Sky Kid! The NES port is amazing (slightly harder than the arcade version) and the arcade version is great fun as well.

It's quite different from most shooters. It's horizontal and tries to mimic plane physics a bit. It's slower moving backward than foward when you get shot you stall instead of blowing up (the only way to die is to crash into the ground). Plus it has cool bombing objective based levels.

Not to mention that I run a high score thread for it here.

Shit, I just played Crisis Force for the 1st time.

Great game, it feels a little like a Compile game (Which is a great thing, hehe :D), but less chaotic.

I was shocked too see the parallax scroll on it..... I don't think I had ever seen anything like that in a NES game. Very impressive.

Oh Konami, why did you stop developing for the MSX so late? If you managed to do that with a NES, I wonder what you could have done with the MSX Turbo-R .... (Or just the MSX2+ really)

Crisis Force (1991 - Famicom) easily outshines Power Strike II (1993 - SMS) in graphics and sound.

Now gameplay... I really don't know.

It's just great to have both!

Power Strike II is the better game.

And I dunno, Power Strike II throws much more on screen than Crisis Force...

Yeah, it's prettier, but that's it; on a gameplay level, I think it doesn't match Gun Nac, let alone Power Strike II SMS.
