Are you a cheapass gamer?

Post by FatCobra »

With the next wave of consoles coming in, how many of you are glad you will finally be able to afford this gen's consoles? If you said yes, then you may be a......Cheapass Gamer!

And there's nothing wrong with that.

Since I'm going to college, money isn't in abundant supply, and I like videogames. See the problem here? Yes, I have a job, but it's a crappy min-wage job and a $400 console is a little out of my budget.

You see, this is why I love planned obselitance. What was considered yesterday's hottest game is now today's coaster. That hot new game system you bought five years ago is now a $5 doorstop. At least that's how it is with the general public. But, a good game is still a good game. We, the shmuppers should know best of all (of course dropping $200 on Radiant Silvergun or a PCB is hardly bargin shopping). Cheap prices are a reason I love used game stores. Sure, the people who work there are pricks, but hey, they have to put up with alot of dumb fucks all day, so I understand. I know, because I used to work at a Circuit City. (Ok, it's not quite the same, but you get the idea).

So, I relish in the thought of finally being able to buy those PS2 games and systems at bargin prices! Sure CD-based hardware is a little finicky, and one good scuff on a CD or DVD means it's toast, but that's the price you pay.

Of course, there are those "must-have" games that have the annoying tendancy to become rare and keep their value, or worse go up in value. That's when I'll glady fork over $50 for a game I know will be hard to find once the hot consoles of today become tommorrow's doorstops.

I'm something between a 'cheapass'- and an 'expensiveass'-gamer!
I bought the Xbox on the 3rd of Mai 2002 (PAL-Release of the GameCube.. hrhr  ) but the other 2 state of the art-systems waited a long time. I think I bought the cube in spring 2003 and the ps2 in fall 2004. I am nobody who buys only new stuff, except hardware. So I assume that I'm only a cheapass gamer in buying games ;)

I'm cheeaaappppp too and proud of it. I don't buy games at full price unless it's absolutely necessary like when a new Gradius or Castlevania is released. There's also that weird ass moment when I buy games at full price, but I believe it's worth it.

I shudder to think how much I've spent on gaming in the past six months, between buying my arcade cab and building my PCB collection, and buying an Xbox360 on launch day...

Same. I've spent a fortune on gaming this year. I've no regrets though! :)

The only console I've ever bought at or near launch-time is the DS. Everything else has been a few years out...though this will change with the Revolution.

The Gamecube had a decent run, though its library is hardly as good as the PS2 or Xbox's. Only the hardest core Nintendo fans could say Nintendo kicked ass this generation.

I only buy about 2 games a year that over $20. Most of the games I buy are even under $10. Just recently I finally got Strikers 1945 for Saturn - I'm about 10 years behind the rest of this forum.

I do most of my gaming on my NES and Genny...or my roommate's consoles.

Yeah, I guess I'm a pretty cheap gamer. Still, I think it's been pretty amazing that the current generation hasn't had any uber-expensive titles yet like DBGT for the PS1 or Black/Matrix for SS.

Yes , that's me!

I only got my PS1 when the PS2 was already out for like 2-3 years.

I'll probably only get my PS2 when the PS3 is out for like 2-3 years.

Heh

Being a student and living in a third-world country all contribute to that :) A PS2 here is still costing around US$ 300-400 , which is too much for me.

But when the PS3 becomes the "norm", PS2s will be a lot cheaper (Who knows, around US$ 80-140), then I'll be able to buy one... when I begin to have fun with Metal Gear Solid 2 (yes, TWO) for the first time, people probably will be get gobsmacked by Metal Gear 2000 X turbo plus or something :)

But I don't care :)

I waited for Steel Empire GBA to go down to 24.90 before I finally got it. I'm glad I got it when I did. Now the price is up to 52.90. Yikes!

I usually get cheaper games that I read up on and wait until Christmas for the more expensive ones.

2005 was a very expensive year for me. Next year though, PSU comes out in February, which means I probably won't buy shit for months after.

Yes, lots of Mario games, n00b. Are you trying to say that they all suck? I personally found Mario Tennis and Mario Baseball to be extremely good games. Mario Party games are hit or miss, but I heard some good things about them, so they aren't the absolute crap games that you are trying to seel them as. Mario Soccer actually sounds pretty darn good. It's from the guys that made Soccer Slam and it has Peach in a sexy outfit and the angriest Mario characters I have ever seen. Also, while Super Mario Sunshine was somewhat disappointing, I still found it to be a well designed and fun game. Also, you didn't mention Paper Mario 2, which I heard nothing but good things about.

BTW, the GCN doesn't have only Mario games. It has a Kururin game, Pikmin, Metroid Prime 1/2, Fire Emblem, Super Monkey Ball, Viewtiful Joe (also on PS2, but the PS2 one is a port with inferior graphics and a tacked on character), F-Zero GX, Zelda Four Swords+ (using Japanese name on purpose), Wind Waker, and other great non-Mario games. As for as lineup, it probably doesn't compare to the PS2s, but it does stand up to the Xbox very well IMO. Xbox has many awesome games like Ninja Gaiden/Black, though.

I have my reserves about spending money on certain things (like food), but boy do I spend spend spend on video games.

I wouldn't spend $10 on some crappy game, but I don't even think twice about plunking down $60 for an import shooter or bemani, I just do it.
Hell, I got my Ketsui PCB by offering higher than the asking price just to make sure I'd get it even if someone beat me to the PM (and now the value is higher than what I ended up paying for it anyway)

I've always been cheap, but since I've got a car to pay off, a new semester starting soon, and likely no job after next week, I am beginning to delve into new realms of cheapness. Be afraid...

I'm about the cheapest gamer I know, I play doujin games and ROMs like 90% of the time. I have bought a few PS2 shmups when I saw them cheap, but I haven't got a PS2 yet.

My new games have been pretty much retro collections that run 20 bucks, and the occasional GBA/Genesis/NES/SNES game over Ebay, yeah I'm cheap, but then again there's a lot to love from those systems of old.

And I bought my PS 2 during the second generation from a guy running an auction, paid 400 bucks for it (I probably could've gotten it for $350, but meh), and I sure as hell would hate to pay a helluva lot for a PSP but then again that system has two games coming for it that look to kick ass.

I get a lot of classic collections too. I love it when old games get ported/emulated to/on newer consoles.

No, I'm not a cheap-ass. I will go out and buy new shit when I can afford it...that is if I really want it in the first place. I never buy stuff to "vote with my wallet", or to show company support. I simply buy stuff that I like.
But hey, I really love a bargain though, so if those Japanese PS2's go way down in price, then I may get a Ceramic White one to play some JAP only shmups and racers.
Then again, maybe I'll just get a mod chip, and mod my old faithful US model.
It still would be great to have backup consoles though...just in case.

Speaking of bargains...if the newer PS2's go down to around a 100 bucks, then one could afford to have one in every room for the cost of one new Xbox 360!!!
Still, those 360's are pretty cool. I just dislike the controllers though. Wow, now that I think about it, all the new console's controllers look kinda "aack"!

I dont buy games when they go cheap. I just dont buy as many games.

I dont mind spending $50+ on a game, but I dont do it as often.

Last year I bought half a dozen PCB's at $200+, a few cabs etc. In 1994 I spent $1000 on a launch Japanese PS1... So as you can see i'm not cheap, just picky.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

One reason why I'm not buying a next-gen anytime soon. The 360's controllers are the most sane out of the lot.

Well sort of. I've been buying DS games like Ford Racing 3 and Pac N'Roll because they're either really cheap or have been discounted. But I have purchased a handful of PS2 full-price imports as of late. Basically, I'm cheap on certain things but not so much on other things.
