The easiest way to tell is to look at the arms the whole way through; it becomes a lot more apparent then.

Hmm after watching the video a few dozen times, it seems they definitely used 3D for some of the animation ... the wide shots with multiple characters especially.

It's a mix of techniques in the sequence as a whole though. Maybe instead of live actors they used the 3D models as a reference?

I remember on one of the Alien Quadrilogy discs as a hidden feature, they had an interview with this guy who built a real power loader in his garage and sent the video to James Cameron. A couple years later, Cameron and his producer tracked the guy down and hired him as an assistant.
