"in my opinion does my nut"? What in the hell is that supposed to mean?

Anyway, Skykid, some people just can't bring themselves to hate certain movies. I myself enjoy the live action version of The Grinch, and the Star Wars prequels despite their shortcomings, and the fact that pretty much everyone hates them for it. (I do, though, acknowledge that they could have done a far better job) I haven't been paying attention to the whole argument, so it might be different with the movie you guys are talking about, but I think it comes down to the fact that he appreciates the movie for it's good aspects, as opposed to focusing on the negative aspects like most people do with poorly rated movies.

Who's this "he"? Pretty much everyone who has made a comment has held the opposite opinion, so technically I'm directing my posts to all of those unfortunate individuals as a group.

Keep in mind I'm happy people think Heat is a 'terrific' piece of cinema, or that the Star Wars prequels are somewhere above animated excrement.

You're just happy because you get to be "right" and other people get to be "wrong", which makes you feel smarter.

There's a fine line between cynical and stubbornly stupid and you've crossed that line awhile ago.

Speaking of dead brains, just watched The Princess Bride.

Laughed so much but feel a bit empty at the end

p.s. Heat didn't end with De Niro's character yelling "NOOoooo" so Michael Mann obviously learned something over all the years!

Speaking of heist movies, anyone ever watch Big Deal on Madonna Street?

It's a really interesting comedy, in that instead of having jokes every couple of minutes, it builds up big punchlines for 5-10 minutes at a time. It's a really enjoyable one.

The glorious incompetence of the final heist is a marvel to behold.

Nope, but I'll put that on the list. Criterion collection to boot! It's subbed, right?

Edit: Just got wind of this, reminds me I still have to watch the original:

You're being called out correctly, Skykid, and you know it.

I hate Lamborghinis. I just think they're all uglier than sin. I've been watching them produce vehicles for, what, 30 years now, and they have, as of yet, to design a vehicle that I'd be happy to be seen in or with, much less drive or own. They're horribly stinking ugly. It's a subjective thing, but I *own that*. It's *me*. I don't go around saying that Lamborghinis suck, or that they can't make a vehicle worth a crap, or that they've never designed anything worth the paper it's on...I just recognize that their design aesthetic is not, has never been, nor will probably ever be, to my taste.

In the same way, you hate "Heat". You're welcome to it...and I don't mind that you do. You're a very vocal minority on this, not necessarily alone, but you've had your objections refuted, and you *still* don't recognize that...it's just you.

I often respect what you say, but certainly in this case, you're just being contrarian for its own sake, and you know it. It doesn't lend you any more credibility...in fact, you lose some because of it. Own what's yours.

Eh, gonna have to agree w/ SK's points if not his tone. I like Heat, but man oh man does it suffer from poor acting and a poor script. That Diner scene could've been better delivered by Zac Efron and Shia LeBoeuf. Pacino is in his 'I don't really need to act anymore' phase, and De Niro is in his 'I really forgot what acting actually is' phase. Skykid is operating under the principle that literal fact is possible in criticism, as opposed to everything being pure opinion. I don't disagree with the sentiment.

We like to think of criticism as the taste equivalent of moral relativism, but I'd say there's a decent amount of objectivity possible there. To put it another way, "my favorite bad movie" may be your favorite, but it's still a bad movie. Every film (or any other form of media) analysis is an amalgamation of sentiment and fact. Not saying that Skykid's position is 100% correct, but his insistence that there's an objective way (not purely objective, since there is no such thing) to judge a film is sound.

But yeah, he is kinda being a dick, y'know, socially. Sorry, SK.

Just saw the director's cut of "Legend"

Still an absolutely gorgeous movie without a thought in its pretty little head, but the cotton-candy plot is much more coherent in this version and they wait until the mirror scene to reveal Currie's Devil costume. Completely different soundtrack in this version, too.

Er no? Called out for what, I'm waxing lyrical about a movie that happens to be poorer than you have the capacity to recognise, no-one's dropping bombs about people's mothers.
Just a movie. It's hardly a thorny subject. You think I'm going to about-face-turn-because of sugarglass feelings. What for?
I hate Lamborghinis. I just think they're all uglier than sin. This is the most worthless way you could have chosen to illustrate your point: there's no connection. Taste and craft are different categories. Opinion isn't infinite just because 'taste' saves the day.

There are definitives in craft. A crappy actor or movie script doesn't cease to be so just because you can't see it. Assembly of film is a science; it's practical, and there are degrees of success.
You're a very vocal minority on this, not necessarily alone, but you've had your objections refuted, and you *still* don't recognize that...it's just you.
'Refuted' is the incorrect word. That would mean someone has proven that I'm incorrect. Hasn't happened, and won't.

Being in the minority is where I'll always aim to be, without question. I have absolutely zero confidence in the opinions of the general masses after seeing how the majority gets it wrong 99% of the time.
but certainly in this case, you're just being contrarian for its own sake, and you know it.
Oh stop saying that. That you think all this discussion has been pitched only for the sparks is a bit insulting. It also reflects badly on your judgment.

@Ed: It's not winning any best picture or best comedy recommendations, but it's a fine little film (and short I believe). Neo-realism and comedy aren't usually pared together, but it makes for a nice, light time.

I have mixed feelings about Legend. I believe I watched the Director's Cut, so that's what I based my thoughts on.

As you said, the movie's gorgeous. And I can even deal with the light-to-nonexistant plot. But I feel like the action scenes are a bit too obscured by smoke and DARKNESS (channeling Curry's hammy reading there), and there aren't enough of them (my favorite scene was the swamp witch). I also didn't like the false tension of the dwarf falling asleep for no reason - it actually pisses you off more than anything. And of course Tom Cruise is pretty air-headed for the role.

I like the movie on a visual level, but something tells me the theatrical cut is probably better.

I watched The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh on Netflix. Just as good as I remembered with an excellent voice cast. The nightmare scene with heffalumps and woosles brings back good memories.

Lovely. A bit of Winnie the Pooh. The antidote to any thread gaining tension. Indeed, bringing him up in any context across the forum may work as a lovely conflict resolution tool.

I had and adored a Winnie the Pooh story cassette as a kid, read by Alan Bennet, in his aurally beautiful, soothing yet miserable tones. I think if I heard a syllable of it now, I'd likely curl up in the foetal position, smile inanely and fall asleep, all in an instant. It was a powerful part of my childhood's happiest period.

Well that's the hell of it. The swamp witch scene is definitely better in the DC, and the story for the good guys is much more clear and coherent, and in theory keeping DARKNESS hidden until the mirror scene is the smart move, but I'm inclined to give the TC the win because it maximizes the movie's strength: Tim Curry as the Devil. More scenes of him, better editing of those scenes. Who cares about Tom Cruise's adventure? The DC is like if Full Metal Jacket kept R. Lee Ermey as a side character only seen in flashbacks.
