RGBS, Composite, S-video, YPbPr to VGA

Post by CkRtech »

Hey all -

So I have been considering adding some sort of display to my workbench (a fairly small workbench, btw) for testing my mods. I only seriously considered it for a moment until I realized my workbench is right next to my vintage computer setup (Pentium 100Mhz, Viewsonic 24" CRT. Could be vintage-ier, but that is a different topic.)

The Viewsonic CRT is fairly modern (2004ish) and only goes down to 31khz. Still...

I would like the ability to hook up my consoles to it via composite, svideo, component and RGB for testing because it is conveniently right there next to me already. I have no issues building a DIY box if necessary, but I was wondering if there might be a good, affordable solution for taking any of those signals and pumping out something like 640x480 31khz VGA. There are certainly cheap solutions for arcade to VGA...and they might be a part of this solution, but it would be nice to have access to most of our old signal types for the various game systems. I would probably add a VGA switch box to keep my vintage PC online.

Suggestions?

Got the DVDO today. Included AC adapter provides 5V. DVDO input wants 6v. Amperage is a match. I'm still concerned...

It won't do any damage. Just give it a try. I really can't remember if the iScan HD was able of running stable on 5V instead of 6V.

Thanks again for the recommendation, Fudoh. I hooked it up during lunch, and it didn't take long to get used to the button interface. Very easy to adjust inputs, aspect ratio, colorspace, sync signals, and all of that. Glad to have it available on the workbench.

Any good resources for the firmware updates on this thing? I know it is 10 years old, but I wouldn't mind checking to make sure all features/capabilities are up to what they should be at "end of life." Looks like DVDO has moved on to the iScan Duo these days.

Also - Serial port, huh? Well...I do have a Pentium 100 Mhz sitting right next to it...

http://www.simplaylabs.com/support/DVDO ... loads.aspx - choose "iScan HD (serial)" on top.

You sure you need a firmware update? I updated my iScan HD because i had an older software which didn't have an option to change the sync signals. Yours seems up to date then.

Also - in case you have some problem updating, PM me as i have had my fair share of problems doing so and i might be able to help you out.

Congrats on the device though - imho a very nice piece to have.
