Consolized Sega Naomi System with Compact Flash Adapter

Post by muckyfingers »

VERSION 2.0 HERE:

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=53587

VERSION1.0:

Just showing off some pics of my new toy. I just finished it today. It uses a PicoPSU for power. I added an orange LED for the power light. I replaced the case fan with a silent one, I hope I can locate a quiet CPU fan sometime. The controls are being handled by the Sega I/O internally. S-Video is a CXA2075M, as it seems to be highly regarded, I'm going to have to play with the resistor values a bit or just add some RGB pots internally so I can set it just right. VGA still works and it is what I use for video, I just threw the S-Video in for fun. I also managed to stuff the Compact Flash card reader into the Netdimm for a very console like feel. Now I need to print out some cool game labels for the compact flash cards.

Can the same compact flash mod be done to an Atomiswave?

No, the compact flash adapter was a Sega replacement for the GD-Rom drive. It was found out to be a compact flash IDE adapter wired to a SCSI connector to use with Sega specific compact flash cards. Then it was hacked to allow the use of just about any compact flash card.

Fantastic. I want to consolize a Naomi 2 eventually. I'd get a vinyl overlay printed with SEGA logos or something for the Netdimm shielding to make it more console-like. Maybe "Player 1" and 2 over the controller ports.

There are several Atomiswave games converted to work with Naomi CF: http://youtu.be/kdMgcGfdy0I

Thank you.

I had the same idea, a friend of mine does Vinyl Printing so he is going to whip something up for me soon.

You also need a Netdimm with a null/zero key pic (I can sell you a null pic $10 shipped), the Netdimms I've seen go for about $150 shipped. Here are some guides for you to check out. What I did was very custom, as most people build one in a project box and have it outside the naomi. If you need one built pm me, I have enough parts to build a project box one.

Great work! How did you wire up the CXA2075M? Is it just wired directly to the RGB output and supplied with a 5V supply, or do you have additional capacitors wired up to it.

I have everything I need except for the Net Dimm.. them dimms are hard to find!

I stupidly missed out on a group buy last month over on KLOV for $110 shipped.

Would have given major props if you went with maple bus and dreamcast controllers. 8)

I wired it up like on the datasheet with needed caps and resistors.

Yes they're getting pricier everyday.

I plan on adding them, just need to find a broken dreamcast first. Also the Dreamcast controllers only work on a few games.

My Naomi is the same as this one
http://home.comcast.net/~dark.paladin/n ... /metal.jpg

As you can see It has some unpopulated connector ports like VGA, audio, maple? etc. later revisions don't have these ports. Has anyone tried to populate them? If so there won't be any need for a filter board which will save too much space when consolizing. Because I want to design and build a plexiglass case for it.

Easy, use a multimeter and check continuity.

Does this mean I can use a PicoPSU for my SEGA Hikaru?! It uses the same power supply as Naomi.

Maybe, do you know how many watts the hikaru pulls?

Not sure. I have one half of a Planet Harriers twin cabinet I'm looking to consolize. From the manual:

You would have to plug the hikaru into something like this

http://www.amazon.com/Weanas%C2%AE-Ener ... watt+meter

and it will tell you how many watts it is using. The 150w PicoPSU should have enough amps for the Hikaru, I just don't know if the wattage is enough though.

EDIT: I just saw some pics of the Hikaru, the PicoPSU should be plenty powerful for that board. I was thinking it was something like the Type-X/TypeX2 where it would need a stronger PSU.

EDIT:

The CXA2075 is working fine, it was the conductive paint used on the case that was causing issues.

Cant you just use a dreamcast extension cable, rather than a broken dreamcast?
Is there a list of games for DC controller support? I thought it was supported at the BIOS level.
I'm interested in this mainly for the possibility of reducing input lag, as it seems the JVS inputs are
lagged by about 1-2 frames on Naomi, whereas on Dreamcast inputs have no lag.

You can indeed use an extension cable wired to the maple bus connector. I just picked one up to test, there doesn't seem to be any sort of definitive list of games that support the DC controller. Once you have the controller connected to the Naomi you load up your game and go into the settings menu to enable the DC controller. I forget what the option is, but only a handful of games support controllers/keyboards.

muckyfingers wrote:Turns out the Naomi does not like any of the CXA RGB to NTSC encoder chips, I get alot of rolling screens and funky colors using the 2075/1645/1145 chips. I'll have to order an AD725 and see if that works any better. Also the CVS287 Scart to YUV/Component converters exhibits the same behavior, minus the funky colors. I use VGA when I play so if it doesn't wind up working I won't mind.
Are you dropping the voltage of the video signals down? If not, that's likely why the CXA encoder is not happy. Those chips expect a voltage swing of like 0-0.7V and the Sega I/O board is likely putting out 0-5.0V. You need to scale the video signals down to an acceptable level.

Could it possibly work with other GD-ROM-using systems (Triforce, Chihiro)? I saw a modded Dreamcast on sale reading SD cards, but thought this kind of memory is too slow to keep up with even pretty old optical drives.
