Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I've been playing a fair bit of Mario Kart Wii again, what with these being the last days of online. I think it has some of the most severe elasticity of the series I've played, which would be all of them except for DS and 3DS. You can bounce from a lead position to a tail one in a heartbeat, and vice versa. Feels like a mistake to increase the racers from 8 to 12, too, and it's definitely one to put blue shells in battle mode.
Mario Kart 64, I'll agree it also had more elasticity than I'd like, and my friends and I would switch to Diddy Kong Racing when we got tired of constantly shuffling positions. I lean closer to Pretas than to Skykid, though. 64 had some great courses, and even though only two of the battle mode arenas were really playable, I'd rather hit those than the battle modes in SNES kart or DKR.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Mario kart aside, IMO the WIIU has the best catalogue of the new systems. Might not be too extense, but the Nintendo Titles it got are all golden. Man Nes Remixes are one of the best among them and if in the next E3 we see a true killer Zelda and Metroid I am sure that as someone mentioned the sales will skyrocket.

Really? The reviews I've read have been pretty tepid; I'd like to hear thoughts from a fan. I do like the concept.Phellan Wolf wrote:Nes Remixes are one of the best among them

NES Remix 1 gets a big "meh" from me. Cool concept, but you have to go through a lot of mundane trials before you get to the cooler, more difficult ones, as well as the new "Remix" ones where they added in extra special effects, or things like a large Bullet Bill in the original SMB that was never there to begin with.Moniker wrote:Really? NES Remix 2 has me interested though. The first dealt mostly with the old black-box NES games, and the second one deals more with some later '80s titles that I am more fond of (Zelda II, Mario 3, Punch-Out, etc). It seems to be getting better reviews than the first game, but I'm waiting to see if they do a disc-based release like in Japan before I invest in a copy.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Super Mario 3D World is like digital crack. I can't stop playing this fucking game. Worth buying the system for IMO.

It does exist as Famicom Remix I&II and is not too expensive. It is a shame that we only get digital release at western sideAustin wrote:NES Remix 1 gets a big "meh" from me. I hope that Nintendo realizes that region coding is just a fucking shit and they release a firmware upgrade to make both 3DS and WiiU region free.

I just got it, it's really good. First Mario Kart I've really played since the SNES one, so a lot of the stuff that's old hat to veterans is new to me. I think I might've played the N64 one a bit too, but not much.
Getting a free game with it is kindof nice, too. :p

I think I am going to buy a Wii U. Not until after E3 of course, but there is a pretty tempting selection of current and future games. Price drop could help.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I haven't used my Wii U much lately, but I did go ahead and pick up a copy of Mario Kart 8 today. Definitely the nicest looking MK game by far, and it has some really nice courses. So far, I'm finding that the online multiplayer is just plain brutal though, I generally seem to end up in a heated battle for 9th place out of 12 in most races. Maybe I just need more practice.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I just picked up Mario Kart 8 too. I haven't played much yet, but it's definitely the best looking in the series and I like how the kart can be customized. I like how it came with a free game (Zelda MM HD was my pick), as well.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I've finally found a setup I'm ok with (Well, ok compared to friggin' awful) - Toad, Circuit Special, Slim tires and Super Glider.
I was fooling around with the bikes and wanted to use them, but drifting with them is really hard for me to control. The Comet feels like it's near impossible to even control ..
And I did unlock the one bike that has the same neutral stats as the default kart (The Duke), buuuuut it's still not as good lol.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I've also been playing a ton of Mario Kart 8. I got three stars in every cup on all of the 150cc and mirror tracks, so I guess I'm done with Grand Prix. The only things I dislike about the game is the lack of single player content (Mario Kart desperately needs a World Tour/mission mode), some item balance (lightning and blue shells are obviously annoying, but the fire flower seems ridiculously good, too) and the coin power up (give me defense items when I'm in first, not fucking coins). Pretty much everything else is fantastic: the tracks are great (besides the two from Double Dash and Moo Moo Meadows; coincidentally, they're from the worst games in the series), drifting feels great, the game looks and sounds amazing, and thankfully, there's an option to do mushroom-only races when playing online. So yeah, it's a great game. I wouldn't put it ahead of Sonic Transformed as the ultimate kart racer, but it probably beats MKDS as the best game in the series.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I've been playing with something similar: Luigi, Pipe Frame, Red Tires, and Whatever Glider. Stats are pretty close, although your setup has better handling. Will give it a try presently.Udderdude wrote:I've finally found a setup I'm ok with (Well, ok compared to friggin' awful) - Toad, Circuit Special, Slim tires and Super Glider.
Bikes are kind of interesting. Your regular turning radius is awful, but they drift nice and tight. My guess is that the ultimate setup for a really skilled player is a heavy character on a bike. High top speed, and tight drifting. Not good enough for that yet...I was fooling around with the bikes and wanted to use them, but drifting with them is really hard for me to control. Surprisingly 150cc is currently kicking my ass.. I've aced all previous installments without much ado. But then I have been doing a different driver and set up with each cup. Maybe time to settle down with a good mix.
Edit: Yeah, your Toad setup got me an easy 3 star gold on the first time out.

Thumbs up. Yeah, you want to just get away from "The pack" as soon as humanly possible. "The pack" is like a giant shark tank, and you're the bait. Alternately, a bucket full of crabs who are all pulling eachother down ..Moniker wrote:Surprisingly 150cc is currently kicking my ass.. I've aced all previous installments without much ado. Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Anyone know how tournament mode works in Mario Kart 8? I really don't get it.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
A mission mode like in MKDS would be good, but all that stuff is still just padding. TT is all the single player content you need.iconoclast wrote:The only things I dislike about the game is the lack of single player content (Mario Kart desperately needs a World Tour/mission mode)
I think the item balance here is better than it's been for a long time, certainly much improved over MKWii and MK7. Blue shells are far less frequent, they hit other racers along the way to first place and there's also a new item which nullifies them completely if you can manage to hold onto it. Lightning's fair anyway since it affects everyone almost equally, and although fire flowers are good I've hardly picked one up, probably fewer than five times in about fifty online races. The new piranha plant item I really like too.iconoclast wrote:some item balance (lightning and blue shells are obviously annoying, but the fire flower seems ridiculously good, too)
Haha, this is annoying, but it does at least ensure first place never feels too safe. MK with all weapons will never be a straight racer, but thankfully the new changes mean it's nothing like the complete roulette wheel that was MK7 at times.iconoclast wrote:and the coin power up (give me defense items when I'm in first, not fucking coins)
Hehe, this is something I'll just have to respectfully disagree with. ST was decent, but no MK.iconoclast wrote:I wouldn't put it ahead of Sonic Transformed as the ultimate kart racer
I think the game's great and a big improvement over the last couple. My only minor gripe so far being the track list. I wish they'd included more from the SNES, especially some Ghost Valley or classic Bowser Castle. Also, Donut Plains 3 is still a great track, but its MK8 incarnation has been severely neutered - no broken bridge to hop over, no mole dodging and all new wide-o-vision. Wario Stadium from the DS has thankfully remained intact though, one of my favourites on the game. I haven't unlocked all parts yet but I agree with bikes seeming like a good choice again, the Sport Bike seems pretty popular online and is easy to control.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I've finally managed to get good enough to drift through rainbow road (the new one) in time trial w/o constantly falling off the edge to my doom. With that noted, I've finally unlocked mirror mode. Yay!
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I really need to start time-trialing Rainbow Road (new & classic, both). In GP, I fall off so often, and have no idea when to spend a mushroom w/o screwing myself over. I can confirm that the leap of faith in Rainbow Road Classic is alive and well. Found it by accident and then royally fucked up and placed 5th.

Oh boy .. I thought drifting rainbow road was hard, turns out mount wario is a friggin' nightmare to drift through. Thankfully the top replay had a few tricks and I beat the staff ghost, but damn thing requires some really precise timing or you eat wall/fall off the mountain.
Also, this is apparently a thing now. Can't say I'm not amused. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpxDuNFBVj8

I don't even have the game yet, but I'm pretty sure all the characters look at each other as they pass.
Even knowing this, that Luigi vid was hilarious.

Finally got the gold tires after lots of practice, and more than a few explictives. Gold kart is next .. unfortunately I don't like grand prix mode nearly as much due to the random bullshit factor (oops you got hit while flying in lap 3, enjoy your 8th place finish). I have to do 6 of the mirror mode ones ..

Yeah, I noticed that red shells can magically fly for some reason, which is total bs.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Ok this was really frustrating me so I'm posting it here.
There's no time trial mirror mode, which makes it seem impossible to practice the mirror courses before you have to do them. However there's a roundabout way of getting a practice setup that's easy to do. Use a VS Race with team game, no items, mirror class, easy COM, all vehicles, choose courses and 32 races.
Once you choose a team and course, it'll be mirror mode with the AI cars left to fight amongst each other, and with no items, they'll just bumble around stupidly. I didn't even see a single one despite fucking up while practicing multiple times. And you can select different courses 32 times before you're kicked out and have to re-select VS Race.
If it wasn't for this, I'd likely have given up on getting the gold kart, as the idea of re-learning the mirror mode courses while the hard AI is breathing down my neck sounds about as inviting as a battery acid enema.
