Peter Jackson's King Kong
Anyone else going catch this movie. Looks decent to me. Naomi Watts is cool. I think Peter Jackson's got a vision.
it's getting great reviews:

this is a no-brainer to see in the theaters, just look at the LotR trilogy.

Peter Jackson is the greatest filmmaker of our time... There, I said it.
Feedback will set you free.

It was a great movie for fans of Kong. Definitely wiped clear all memories of the 70's kong, while making fantastic homages to the first kong and improving on several aspects.
I still feel the first hour could easily be tightened down though--I mean, the film doesn't really start until you get to the island, and in this version, that takes nearly an hour!

Loved the movie, Jackson is not fooling around when he says Kong is his beloved childhood movie. This update is like a love note to the original.
Let's get CGI outta the way first: The raptors look like crap and the brontosaurs looked "meh." Everything else, especially Kong himself was amazing. I have never seen so much emotion and expression in a CGI animal before, looked just like a real, living breathing Rwandan gorilla. I thought I was gonna tear up when he was motioning the word "beautiful" when looking at the sunset.
Also loved it when Kong was teasing Ann, pushing her down and laughing at her.
Jack Black was great as Carl Denham, surprisingly excellent acting on his part, you can really tell Jackson reigned him in (as he said he did so in an interview "We held back his 'funnier' side" ) Naomi Watts, Colin Hanks and Andy Serkis who also played Lumpy () and whoever played the captain, all fine work.
The length of the movie fit well, 1 hour of getting to know all the colorful characters, 1 hour or so on the island and then one hour in NY.
I also encourage folks here to check out the 2 disc re-release of the original.

I cringed when those swamp worms ate him

Hmmm I was actually a bit disapointed by the movie. The end had just way too much shmaltz for my taste. Instead of being understated and highly moving, I found it too protracted and clumsily done. A bit of a shame, as the rest of the movie was superb, especially the Skull Island section.

I actually thought this thread was about the Xbox 360 game, King Kong, but after reading the first post... Needless to say that I was disappointed when it was not. I was about to chime in how crappy that game was.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what some of my close friends have said, it's worth watching. But I'll just wait til it comes out on DVD. I just don't feel like shelling out $8 to check out a flick and end up not liking it, then I'd feel like an ass for wasting it instead of a combo meal at Carl's Jr. and a lottery ticket.

I saw it last night. Amazingly enough, i liked it. Not common for me.
Anyway... it was an excellent movie. The cg looked fake ass on everything that was moving rapidly as usual but we'll let that slide since it was still entertaining - especially the 'vines' scene.
There where actually a couple parts in this movie that scared me! ('natives' and 'insects'... eek!) I was there with my wife's little brother and i seriously thought about covering his eyes in those parts. I let that kid watch everything this side of Devil's Rejects - but those scenes made me cringe.
Good movie.

Godzilla was an inside job
I'm looking at the commercials and I'm thinking holy shit, the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park from 12 years ago look better than the creatures in this one.
I think the CGI looks terrible, but I think of that for any movie that's live and not totally animated, like Finding Nemo or Toy Story. It just totally throws me off. Kong's a big ole, shiny ape. I don't care how 'good' the CGI is (amount of hair on Kong's body, articulation, blah) because it just doesn't mesh well.

He was mostly known for making these cheap-ass splatter movies & only got famous after Lord of The Rings, which it sucked imo. The Cast of the actors he chose (With the exception of Christopher Lee, Orlando Bloom & the guy who played Gandalf) was below average.Acid King wrote:Peter Jackson is the greatest filmmaker of our time... I haven't seen King Kong yet, but judging by the commercials they’re generally focused on the CG fight scene with T-Rex.

Viggo Mortensen did a good job (and wasn't PJ's first choice -- apparently he replaced someone that wasn't right for the part). Frightners was a movie he did, which was pretty good I thought. One of the first "spooky" movies that wasn't supposed to be scary.

Frighteners is one of my all-time favourite movies, despite its problems. I just saw the new dvd director's cut version of it (which I presume is from the laserdisk); and now I rate the film even higher.GaijinPunch wrote:Viggo Mortensen did a good job (and wasn't his first choice -- apparently he replaced someone that wasn't right for the part). But then I've been PJ fan since the eighties..
I always thought Orlando Bloom, was the weakest part of the cast throughout the three movies. Sir Ian McKellen was simply brilliant as Gandalf though.ST Dragon wrote:He was mostly known for making these cheap-ass splatter movies & only got famous after Lord of The Rings, which it sucked imo.
