35" Gateway Destination computer monitor.

Post by mvsfan »

Ive got an opportunity to buy a 35" gateway destination Crt computer monitor. I would be running various old consoles like nes and snes through a Gbs-8220.

Has anyone done this? how does it look? my guess is that it looks awesome but id like to hear from someone else who has this setup.

Wthout an SLG-3000 or Mini SLG, it's going to look like ass. It's running in VGA 31khz, so it will be pixelated, just like running an emulator on your PC.

The GBS will ruin it. Far too bad processor for a tube like this.

Ive got a mini slg, muckyfingers. Ive just never used it its been sitting in a box along with the gbs8220. how does it look with that? is it as good as my sony wega?

Ive just never tried converting 31khz setup before. Ive already got 2 of the best setups.

I have a 32" sony wega crt with component converting from scart,

and i also have a 25" Tri-sync Makvision arcade monitor in a cabinet.

out of both of them the wega isnt as sharp as the arcade monitor but its very good.

it helps, but the problem with the GBS is that it can't tell 240p from 480i and treats both the same. You're loosing specific 240p effects and get artifacts in return. So, if you NEED to use it, use a SLG device along with it.

Hmm - Thanks fudoh i never heard that before. Good info. an x-rgb is definately better but i havent run across a bargain one yet so ive stuck with my scart setup until this monitor came up.

i was always intending to use the gbs and the slg with a big flat screen since crts are starting to get old i was hoping to play with it a bit and find some kind of newer setup that worked - but ive never messed with it.

for the near future it wont hurt to pick up a few extra crts.

heres another idea also - where in the US is a good place to find big 15khz Rgb monitors besides ebay and Craigslist?

Ive come across some mitsubishi megaview monitors but they all seem to be from the early to mid 90s.

i want something a bit newer than that. the caps are probably starting to dry out by now.

It depends, if that Wega is an SDTV, that is your best way to play those consoles. Upscaling to VGA with the GBS8220 and using an SLG in pointless (when you have an SDTV) and won't look as sharp. You'll also get some artifact issues as Fudoh mentioned. If you are trying to consolidate a bit and keep the VGA CRT, I would recommend getting an X-RGB. Also try playing with the sharpness of you Wega. I am sure the Tri-Sync has fat scanlines compared your Wega, those fat lines aren't accurate to how a low res monitor should look. The GBS8220 with the mini slg should be about the same as your Tri-Sync as far as how the scanlines will look. Anyways, you won't really know anything until you try it for yourself.

The Mitsubishi Megaview's are tri-sync as well and will have the fat scanlines to go with it. The Sony PVM 15khz monitors have a beautiful picture, but they are old. If you are looking for something newer I would recommend a Sharp Xflat TV. They are flat screen (not flat panel) SDTV's with gorgeous 240p component video. I liked it better than the couple of Wega's I tried.

Yeah, The WEGA does have a nice picture. Its a 4:3 60hz Crt. Plays everything beautifully.

It wasnt just me that thought the wega was Almost as sharp or as sharp as the tri-sync then.

I must already have a way better setup than that old computer monitor would be.

thanks.

I think ive made my descision not to get it - although the computer monitor would still be a heck of a display for PC games.

I dont think i have the counter space for it though.

Those gateway's only go up to 800x600 max so it won't look any better than your tri-sync running 640x480/480p games.

I had one for a while. Looked fantastic with a XRGB, but way too big and unwieldy. I eventually (basically) gave it away and didn't regret it.

I passed on the computer monitor.

but from what others have said, I think i already have one of the better displays. Its a Wega KV32FS120.

Ive actually been looking for a 40" wega but im not sure if they made one in 60hz.

I have a 27fs120. Have a couple little issues with it I'd like to sort out, but overall a pretty brilliant set.

It uses the BA-6 chassis, which only has two PCBs inside - the previous chassis type, the BA-5, has five PCBs inside!

5 pcbs thats a lot. they must have really done some parts combining to fit it all on 2.

My tv only has 1 issue that i cant fix. When i first bought the tv i had it on the floor for a while because i had to widen the tv space in my entertainment center in order for it to fit. in that time A bass guitar got placed next to it and the magnetic pickups in it caused a small purple spot to appear on the tv. Its still there.

Ive tried using a degauss coil to no avail.

other than that its a great tv.
