PS2 RGsB 480p on a VGA monitor

Post by Xan »

I have a Sony CPD-E450 monitor and for some time I was thinking about using a PS2 with it. The monitor does support SoG of course. I'm assuming the PS2 outputs 720x480 instead of 640x480 with standard VGA timings, and I'm not sure if the monitor supports this. Looking at the service manual there is a small table with supported timings where it is not listed. The max. resolution of 1920x1440 isn't listed there either though, so this doesn't have to mean much.

Before I go out and buy a component cable+adapter, can anybody tell me if this should work or not? :)

Of course the monitor supports 720x480p. No problem and with SoG you should be fine.

Just remember that the PS2 boots in 15khz and you have to switch your games into 31khz blindly.

According to Fudoh, the only console that does 640x480 is the Xbox 360, consoles use the broadcast standards, Low Definition (320x240p), Standard Definition (720x480i) and Enhanced Definition (720x480p) all of these are 4:3 aspect ratio resolutions.

That's nice. I'm going to try it then, thanks for the replies :)

It's a true shame that so few PAL PS2 games support 480p in the first place... guess it's still better than what they did for PAL GC games though.

According to Fudoh, European CRT did not provide 480p support, usually most of them either provided Scart (240p and 480i) and a couple provided composite RCA. This quite obvious by the fact that most European consoles came with composite RCA connections with a scart adapter, the RGB scart cables were sold separatly, only the Super Nintendo, the Saturn and the french Megadrive came with an RGB scart cable. So alot of Gamecube games which supported 480p in the US versions had the 480p capabilities removed in the European version.

Yeah, I know. Not just a lot, but basically all of them actually. The only exception I'm aware of is Timesplitters Future Perfect.

I did try this now briefly with Resident Evil 4 and while it works out alright, I can't say I'm impressed with the quality at all. The signal appears a bit blurry overall and there is some sort of "ghosting" going on. Either something is wrong with my cable chain or this is how the 480p signal from the PS2 is supposed to look. I made a picture which shows it pretty well.

no idea how RE4 looks in 480p, but the PS2's 480p signal is as good as it gets. Actually considerably better than all other 480p consoles of that era. The ghosting has to be caused by your setup.

Here is what RE4 for PS2 looks like on my HDTV while in Progressive Scan Mode without scanlines and while outputting at 1080p. No ghosting on my end and I'm using a ancient TV so you would think it would look better on a monitor. The artifacts are from the TV itself and I can't seem to figure out how to take a clear picture without them appearing. Also I find that setting the Image Mode to Movie helps reduce Ghosting/Motion Blur.

Yeah, guess it's something with my setup then. I can probably exclude the monitor since I use it for other stuff and never saw anything like this. The cable chain consists of these generic component cables, some component->VGA adapter I bought used (could be a custom job anyway) and a VGA gender changer for the soldered cable of my monitor.

But anyway, this is more experimental than anything. There aren't that many 480p PS2 games to begin with, and the setting everything blindly thing is sort of annoying.

Most likely the cable causing ghosting, the cheaper component cables always ghosted for me. Official ones work fine.

Actually, there are a lot of 480p games when you use GS Mode Selector.

And the cool thing is you can play the 480i games on your VGA monitor with the 640x960i mode
