SNES Background shimmering/flicker on LCD
I recently acquired a SNES which ive been running through an lcd via scart. I've noticed that when in motion, there is a lot of shimmering and flickering in the background textures. I compared this to the image through wii's emulated SNES and this doesn't have the same issue.
Im not sure whether this is because the snes is running at 50hz as opposed to 60hz on the wii., or if this Is this due to the way the snes outputs the image.
Does anyone know whats happening here?
Thanks

Is it only on very solid blue, red, or green colors (i.e. big blue sky, giant green block in smw)?

No its more like the image is a bit jumpy, I noticed it in guardia forrest in chrono trigger. Im using a sd2snes so not sure if its to do with forcing US roms into PAL format.

Yes seems so, not sure what region my all my roms are, but just tried mario world and it was happening, it is quite subtle though.

Thanks for your help man, but that's not the issue, the picture is really bright and sharp and looks really good apart from the flicker thing.
Think il just buy another cheap snes and test it on another one.

If it's only when the picture moves it's almost certainly your TVs deinterlacer messing things up.

Re: SNES Background shimmering/flicker on LCD
How is your Wii connected? I assume via component, so you get a 480p image at 59.94Hz.
How is your SNES connected? Directly to the TV? Most modern TVs can't handle 240p SCART well. What makes it worse is that old consoles don't exactly output at 50.00Hz / 59.94Hz.
Also forcing NTSC games to run at 50Hz is a crime

Exactly. Your TV knows how to display 480p or 480i from your Wii, but treats 240p from your SNES as 480i.why would it happen with the snes but not with the wii? different resolutions?

Yeah Wii via component, SNES by a gamecube scart cable direct to tv. I have an old Sony Bravia 32D3000.blizzz wrote:How is your Wii connected? I assume via component, so you get a 480p image at 59.94Hz.

Its only a temporary situation until I get my BVM working, and SNES modded for multi region, then goodbye 50Hz.
I was just worried my SNES was dying or something, don't want to fork out £50 to get it modded if it isn't working properly, its a 1-chip, but I can still notice the vertical bar slightly, that vertical bar has been the bane of my existence ever since i was a kid!
Although now Ive realized I probably should have bought a Super Famicom, then a mod wouldnt be necessary, I have no desire to play PAL games.
Damn LCD's suck balls for retro gaming.

Re: SNES Background shimmering/flicker on LCD
If you plan to use an LCD in the future, for example with an XRGB Mini, you should buy a real NTSC console. A modded PAL SNES has a different refresh rate than a real NTSC console which causes micro-stutter. This is no problem on a CRT of course. Just keep it in mind before you put more money/effort into the PAL console.

Re: SNES Background shimmering/flicker on LCD
Yeah I just wanted a PAL SNES for the looks, but getting a Japanese console is probably better, don't know why I didn't think of that before.
