well, i'd say it's tougher than your average NES shump for sure
Solar Jetman would be a good contender, but it's also by Rare so it doesn't count

My only experience with Battletoads NES is co op, so of course I think it's the hardest thing ever lol

The farthest I got into Battletoads (without using savestates) was Karnath's Lair. And this isn't even the hardest level. Seriously, this game is pure bullshit, you actually need a lot of luck, even if you memorize everything and have excellent reflexes.

Battletoads is a lot like Futari v1.00, being ridiculously hard plus even outright impossible in certain categories.

Two player is totally impossible to beat due to a bug, so it doesn't really counts.

That's the idea - Battletoads two player and Futari v1.01 are compared by lieu of both having unplayable/impossible sections due to lack of testing.

I went through a phase two or so years ago when I was absolutely obsessed with beating Battletoads (legitimately on an actual NES). I made it to the final level before finally giving in to frustration due to the limited continues. Looking back on things, I have no clue how I was able to tolerate the ridiculously unfair stage layouts and enemies.
