Nintendo to buy Mega Man franchise

Post by eatdogs »

Ok, so I heard this last night at our local Retro Gamers Society meet up. One of our members works for Gamestop and had been for many years. He actually worked for Funcoland then Gamestop. Anyway he's gotten some inside rumours and he gets to visit trade shows and such and one big rumor is that Nintendo is buying, or had already bought, Mega Man. I'm not sure if it's that Nintendo actually bought Capcom itself, or just the franchise.

This makes total sense to me. It just works and fits like a glove. Also, Nintendo is supposed to have a special E3 presentation for the 3DS. I bet you they'll show something for Mega Man like Mega Man Legend 3 or a new title in the classic series. I also wouldn't skip out on seeing that Majora's Mask remake either.

Lastly, he told me another rumor. Gamestop is looking into starting new stores possibly called Gamestop Retro. He said they might be trying to open around 200 / 500 locations. They would sell retro games from the PS2 gen and back only. He said they are thinking about it because it's an untapped market.

I actually don't like that rumor, but it's just a rumor for now...

That is all. I'm really excited about E3 this year. Actually more excited about Nintendo that anything else!

Proof? "I heard it from my uncle's cousin who works at Nintendo..." was only good enough on the elementary school playground.

I've heard Sony is buying Nintendo.

Hint: even rumors need a credible source for them to be worth talking about. This thread is a waste of space, until someone can figure out a fun way to derail it.

Just expect the unexpected I guess. It was just a rumor, but it's one that makes sense, at least for Mega Man.

I'd rather they not, lol. This rumor is unfounded, and unlikely, though.

This is a load of shit. Nintendo can barely manage their own legacy titles.

Why would Capcom sell the Mega Man IP to Nintendo? They love shitting on it and making the fans watch it.

The same could be said of Nintendo and everything that's not Mario or Pokeymon

???

Show me an iteration of a Nintendo IP that isn't at least "good" and I'll eat my hat. Even the lesser Mario Karts are at least "good." If anything, they spend too much time on legacy IPs.

I thought that Mega Man was kind of Capcom's Mickey Mouse. If that's true, selling it would be unlikely for symbolic reasons if nothing else.

That said, I could definitely see them whoring it out for some number of games/years if they're feeling constipated and not up to shitting on it themselves for a while...

Mega Man just doesn't seem like Nintendo's style, and I haven't been getting the impression that Capcom is hurting for money.

Still, I was kind of hoping that they'd keep making games after 10. Nintendo's good at regularly redeveloping the same game with little to no significant changes so if they did by Mega Man maybe we'd get an 11.

Kid Icarus (say what you what about the controls, but the 3DS game is the best use of the IP in years), Kirby, Animal Crossing, Steel Diver, Donkey Kong, and Zelda say hi.

Mario's Time Machine, Wand of Gamelon. You can start boiling your headwear now.

More serious answer: Yoshi's New Island. Feels like a doujin game or shovelware. It was developed by a no-name third party studio, and it shows.

Arzest is the name of the company, which is made up of former members of Artoon, which had former Sega staff. Artoon was initially hyped because the staff included the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, Naoto Ōshima, but their output has been mostly mediocre.

Okay, so you have an NES edutainment offshoot, and a PC-I game. That leaves one legitimate shit Nintendo IP offering, which, by all accounts, is at worst mediocre.

Nintendo treats its franchises with respect. Doesn't always hit the nail on the head, but comparing it to Capcom's treatment of Mega Man? Worse than absurd.

Bad iterations of nintendo IPs? That's easy.

Super Smash Bros Brawl
New Super Mario World
Yoshi's New Island
Pokemon Ranger
Kirby Air Ride
Star Fox Adventures
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Donkey Kong 64
Custom Robo Arena

Your move.

I keep wanting to add Super Mario Sunshine to this list. Am I wrong?

Donkey Kong 64 is playable. Mega Man 64...well, maybe that has some fans, I dunno. I couldn't stand to play it. There's more variation in quality in Capcom games than in Nintendo ones, I'd agree.

Kind of strange that everybody is responding to this topic, and even stranger the direction it took...

Yes, and in the context of a comparison with the same company responsible for certain Resident Evil titles, yes again. But also yes: Nintendo games are often overrated. Sunshine was a pretty good demo of the GameCube's graphical abilities, though.

I meant that Nintendo neglects a lot of their older series, like F Zero, Metroid and Mother.

And yeah, every series has at least one black sheep. Like Sunshine, lol.

Nintendo neglects its back catalog less than probably any other game company in existence, lol (with a fudge factor for one-note companies / companies without a sizable catalogue: Who's still waiting on that next Quake expansion pack? Or Ricochet by Valve?).

New Super Mario World
Doesn't exist (not officially, anyway). I'm guessing you meant one of the New SMB games? While they may not offer much that is new in terms of gameplay, I didn't find any of the NSMB games to be bad. I'm guessing you didn't mean Super Mario 3D World, since it's one of the better SMB games and one of the best games on Wii U.

Right, no, sorry. I meant NSMB on the Wii. I haven't played the WiiU iteration.

Ah, the untapped PS2 market! A market being tapped by online retailers like ebay, and brick & mortar stores like CD Warehouse, and that GameStop itself tapped for more than a decade until they stopped because the profits fell too low.

That's where the gold is.

Megaman x Streetfighter will probably be the last we get for around a decade.

Considering that the current owner doesn't have the balls to bring Mega Man into the latest generation, I think it'd be interesting if this were true. I'm all for nostalgia but when they suddenly imploded it back into it's original 8-bit state I was unimpressed. Meanwhile Sonic, Mario, Kirby, and any other platforming competitors have been upping the anti and trying new things (well mario has been lazy lately with it's side scrollers but you get the point).
